  • And this is why we will be slaves to tyranny. Because the ignorant work towards the goals of the tyrants like happy sheep, satisfied in their positions.

  • The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is supposed to be a "space where all stakeholders can air their views and exchange ideas." This illustrates the need for continued attention, advocacy, and dialogue around resisting Internet censorship -- at the IGF and other venues. The Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT) wrote an article on this incident, which you can find here: cdt (dot) org/blogs/cynthia-wong/study-irony-censorship-igf

  • the UN should be ashamed of itself - since when does one nation deserve special treatment? china is no better than any other nation, so why can people openly discuss these things?

  • :-) I love a healthy dose of sarcasm. I would have picked someone from this century, though. Conspiracy Theory nuts crack me up .... so detached from reality.

  • kind of ironic that the big b's 9th from cloclworld orange played for a second

  • 3:15. Quoting from slashdot:

"So this is how liberty dies, with thunderous applause." - Concerned Onlooker

  • the UN doesnt have any balls, they are so busy trying to make everyone happy, they arent going to get anything done.

  • This UN action is understandably not in the spirit of modern democracies. Keep in mind that the UN has to honor the reasonable wishes of member nations. I wonder what reaction would be if a middle eastern author/group released a book, with facts to back it up, of the U.S. government's murdering of civilians and human rights abuses. The U.S. may not like that image even though it has occurred before. I'm not taking sides here, just trying to show different viewpoints.

  • This is terrible. UN should be ashamed.

  • Free Speech does not exist.

  • Actually it sounds stupid enough. One World Governament. Honestly,

  • The united nations and the vatican along with bilderberg need to be destroyed!! How long is going to take the rest of the world to figure that out?

  • The UN suit guys and the guard are speaking french, suit guys are telling the guard to roll the poster up, then to take it down, then to fold it very carefully.

  • Know thy enemy. The secretive UN global government agenda creators/promoters: wikicompany. org/wiki/911:Vatican_%26_Jesuits

    Wake up and speakup people!

  • What a shame the Great Firewall of China only seems to work in one direction - if they stopped all the Chinese spammers and skript kiddies from getting OUT I might actually have some bandwidth left at the end of the month and the people that really wanted to visit my sites could do so. Second, you should know by now that the real purpose of the "United" Nations is to OBSERVE. Which basically means that they travel in force to newsworthy locations and watch people getting blown to pieces in wars.

  • Why are we giving money to these bastards?

  • because you have no choice

  • Hypocritical organization is hypocritical.

  • We tend to forget that China is a dictatorship, and gaining so much economic power that the behavior is showing up globally.

  • The UN is no more then a authority to control the minds of the polulation, to govern and set rules. Why the hatred for the beauracracy? becasue plain and simple, it's setting the rules of where U have to abide to! FIGHT FOR YOUR FREEDOM GODDAMNIT!!!

  • This is an act against freedom of speech

wich will be set uppon us much more during along the period. It was already in work, we are realy not free in terms what 'they' tell us what freedom actualy realy means, instead we are told so!

  • Hey teenlabotomy...100 wars have started since the u.n. began, they are direct affiliation of the vatican and have been "in bible terms" the antichrist since they came about!!!!

  • Hey millersxtremedepot! No offense, but you really need to seek some mental health help! Hope you get better soon!

  • Wait! How many wars have started since we landed on the moon? Did we put something there to cause global unrest?

  • Why all the hatred towards the beauracracy of the UN? I believe people have unreasonable expectations of the organization. You forget that, in the grand scheme of things, the UN is a young organization. The concept of so many differing nations coming together and at least attempting to cooperate is an amazing step forwards for humanity. Sure it has its problems, but how many times in history has such an organization existed? (The League of Nations doesn't count because it was a complete failure)

  • "Why all the hatred towards the beauracracy of the UN?"

Because it does a great deal of harm and a minuscule amount of good.

    Next question?

  • Last time I checked the UN has made much more to help the world progress towards a state of peacefulness than it has to hinder it. Just because it is ineffective in some areas (which comes naturally when you have that many varying cultures and political viewpoints in one place) does not mean the good it has done is not worth the quagmire that must be gone through to get there.

  • "Last time I checked"?

What did you check exactly? What has the UN done to help the world progress to a state of peacefulness?

    Explain yourself.

  • Never before in the history of the world has an organization existed that brought about the cooperation of such differing nations. I am not claiming the UN is without its flaws, because it has many. All I am saying is that it is a huge step in the right direction. It gives a voice, albeit a small one, to states which would otherwise go ignored on the world stage. Yes, the UN is largely ineffective, but it is really still a very new concept in the world of international relations.

  • "largely ineffective"?

    You spelt "completely" wrong.

The first item in Article 1 of the UN Charter states that the UN is "To maintain international peace and security, and to that end: to take effective collective measures for the prevention and removal of threats to the peace"

How often do they do this? They do fuck all and more often than not make things worse. Think of UN peacekeepers raping girls in the Congo or the fiasco in the balkans 10 years ago.

  • I don't know much about the specifics of the decision but it is safe to assume that because people were filming this the organisers were very reluctant to remove the poster as there would be some record of that action. So I guess they checked and double checked with their superiors on whether they had a direct order to remove this or not. That is probably why the removal took a considerable amount of time.

  • giving up freedom for "security" is bullshit

  • 滅茶苦茶

    'nuff said...

  • What?

I ran that through babelfish and it says "Extinguishes the tea bitter tea"

    ??

You have bitter tea? Is it alight and thus requires extinguishing?

  • Look how long it takes for a room full of bureaucrats to make a decision whenever anyone does anything even mildly in the spirit of reformation and enlightenment.

  • No surprises here.

  • Who was it who used to put up the "Get US out of the UN" billboards? Maybe the John Birch Society wasn't so far off center after all.

  • Who was it who used to put up the "Get US out on the UN" billboards? Maybe the John Birch Society wasn't so far off center after all.

  • Just a demonstration of the Inefficiency at taking a decision, it took 3 trained security personnel four minutes to reach a conclusion, the poster protested censorships, was it out of line? that's why Darfur, Cambodia ppl would suffer forever waiting for UN decisions.

I bet those who clapped just did so out of a panting-dog habit, if the ones vindicative of the poster won these guys would have clapped just the same.

Abolish UN dead-load of staff for they just want to travel and eat for free..

  • wow muanteebbbb punya nih... :)

    gak sia2 instink jurnalisnya :))

  • That's pretty messed up. Censorship can only be evil. I'm surprised that these kinda things still go on in modern day society. A big WTF is going on here UN?

  • Would it be possible to get say, 1000 copies of that poster and put it outside every Chinese consulate in the US? Just a thought.

  • I think we need to soberly compare the bad the UN has done with the good, and ask ourselves is it worth having the UN at all?

Perhaps replace it with some sort of joint conference where the nations of the world can work things out, but without the charters, the resolutions, the conventions and other such bullshit that cause more problems than they solve.

  • I know: How about a "League of Nations?" That has a catchy ring to it.

  • What? Are you retarded?

  • who was the Chinese dude with the camera? Part of the god damned Chinese government?

  • The UN demonstrates that they are in political agreement with tyrants who censor access to information which they feel threatens their regimes.

Thus, the UN makes a mockery of their own Constitution.

  • Well, the UN is owned by those five countries (including China) anyway //sarcasm

  • Guy1: So, what is actually going on? Girl1: Sir. Guy2: We need to tear it up or something. Guy1: There is no mention of Tibet there. Guy2: Cover it up, cover it up. UN Guy: It is applied to human rights, please understand that. Please understand that. Guy3: They're asking us to remove it. Guy2: Just cover it up. UN Guy: Please, step back, step back. Guy2: Please. Guy1: Are you disappointed? Guy3: Yes, I am. Guy4: Who wanted you to do this? * U.N. security takes poster to the U.N. security office
  • The UN at its best? China on the security council is a sick joke.

  • rad. thats the type of authoritative reaction that really gets a guy motivated to go push the elderly down long flights of stairs or kick pregnant women in the cunt from behind...completely UN sanctioned.

  • If this was an attempt to reduce publicity for the campaign, it clearly failed spectacularly - this is now on the front page of Slashdot.

  • Not surprised.

The UN has zero credibility when TOTALITARIAN CHINA hold a permanent seat on the security council.

  • So, I can't criticise either my bank or my government ? I owe them both money.

China has become the world's largest, most thin-skinned bully; an able successor to the US as a superpower.

  • Those how clapped should be fired from there office. They are not fit at all for the job they are in.

  • Those WHO clapped should be fired from THEIR office. They are not fit for the position they hold.

  • From the applause it looks like just another bunch of freeloaders in suits with their snouts in the trough.

  • I think I heard two or three sets of hands clapping. Probably those are the ones who threw it down because they didn't like the denunciation of censorship in it. Oh the irony.

  • Is this an event where everyone brings posters, and this was the only one taken down, or is this an event where no posters were expected and this was the only one there?

From the video, I can't see any other posters.

  • With a lot of conferences, the keynote presenters have the option to display a poster explaining their presentation or promoting their book.

Diplomatically you don't piss off your major trading partners. Who also also owed massive amounts of money.

  • Comment removed

  • It's not clear from the video if there were any other signs or posters in the room, but it didn't look like there was. It could be argued that any signs with political motivations (overt or implied) would have been removed.

That said, the irony of having discussions about internet governance in Egypt, a location of well-known suppression of political expression, ought to have been enough.

  • Wow, applause when its taken down. That goes to show how the UN really doesn't care about freedom of expression.

  • Comment removed

  • Link is in the description.

  • It is now slashdotted...

  • And, THIS is why the US should get out of the UN. There is NOTHING democratic about the UN. Human rights means nothing to the UN when a powerful government decides that they should mean nothing. What a farce.

  • awesome work with the camera. as always, people handle video cameras as if they were castanets, making it nearly impossible for anyone to see what is going on. sigh.

  • Not the first time a UN organization has totally made a mockery of itself, forgetting its mission and goals and instead falling pray to politics and tyrannical or biased regimes. Check out past UN supposed human rights conferences for a good example. But I too am curious about the true backstory - why was the poster being removed?

  • open society we failed it

  • And so it begins.

  • Where can I get a copy of this poster? I feel an irresistable urge to read it and, perhaps, disseminate it.

  • Have a think next time before that urge to be the "voice of reason" kicks in.

  • Well, the only words I understood from that video were "that's the title of our new book". I didn't see any other posters around the conference room, so it seems likely that this poster was the only one. I'll quite happily agree with claims of censorship and repression if I see some actual evidence for that. Until then I remain skeptical.

A handheld video of an obscured poster and a bunch of unidentified people in suits holding inaudible discussions does not a conspiracy make.

  • Apparently, you didn't hear the whole video.

  • Well said, mate.

  • UN: pwned by China. Everyone else: get ready!

  • when you destroy other peoples' property, isn't this normally known as vandalism?

  • Ugh. Just ugh. But why are people clapping? What's the backstory?

  • The UN Security office had made a fool out of themselves. Totally outrageous!

  • Ridiculous! *no other words can describe this..*
