Its becouse he dident feal confident using it he was using his gun as a crouch for everything now that it was destroyed he was Ready to stand on his own feat instid of his fathers that and he does have sword training
actually i don't think he is. of course he could be but it's not like he went there on purpose i think the legend might have been made by another alien race that excisted close to expel and that the warrior of light would be when they came
In the game Claude already recevied sword training and was quite good at it swords were just an impractical weapon for a federation officer to carry around.

I haven't played the PSP port, but I know they don't kill Alen in the PS1 version; they just knock him out.
