Hi Andrew. You are really helping me to learn piano. I was thinking. In a long way perspective, which would be best? To learn a complicated song (i want to learn the heart asks pleasure first by michael nyman) or to learn the all the mayors and minors and stuff like that? which would be the easiest way for me to learn to play piano?
@mrgurkey Hi, i'm dealing with the same question, and my solution is that I spend half my practice time on a complex piece and the other half learning techniques
Since first watching this a few months ago I have learned 5 relatively hard songs. I think out of all the videos I've watched this is probably the most useful one I've watched. I learn a song each bar at a time and it really helps a ton. I'd still be scratching my head if I hadn't seen this video or any of the others. I've taken quite a few lessons and its just not enough for me to get better. Most of them went through the motions. I just can't learn that much in 30 minutes or less.
@50naren piano helps you learn a lot in music and harmony and is also gonna make you mor proficient at keyboards and synths. it's an excellent starting point because it is such a complete instrument. and yes this is gonan help you learn keyboards
Wow you are awesome Andrew. Your humble and you give what many people aren't willing to give. People don't want to give away their secrets for fear of whatever reason they might have. I hope to eventually watch every video you made. I think I've watched maybe 20% of all your videos. I wish you lived closer to me I'd take lesson from you.
Andrew... This is very helpful, even after an upload date of almost 2 years ago. I am just re-starting my career in music after 14 years as a professional. I play bass mostly, and am learning the piano (slowly). I find learning and retaining song after song very frustrating. Thanks for trying to make it easier for us! You still ROCK!!
i wouldnt mind the low volume if your opening didnt blast my ears cus i have volume at max i think (if u havnt fixed it) that if your vids are going to be quiet your opening should match it so its even
I've been following u'r online piano lessons and I've already completed the Level 1 with 95 out of a 100 points :)
This is .. (i think it is..) the first comment of mine on one of your videos and this one is a BIG LIKE! ... the 5 or. 6 layers your talking about while learning a piece of music are just smashing! Really very helpful. I'm just starting to study music of sheets and this lesson will give me a big boost! Thank you so much! Stay tuned!
@silversnow2008 You can try experiment playing with your own fingerings until you found one that is the most comfortable for you, and indicate on the score. Because sometimes even the score shows fingering, you may not be comfortable with it, the best is to play it in such a way that suits you. That's what I think.

I've played piano for many years, but always had a struggle with learning new pieces. I will try your method and see if it will help. Sounds logical enough :)
How exactly are you supposed to thinking about chords when going through the mental image phase? Should the notes be said separately or should a chord name be used?
Hey Andrew! Thanks for the videos, I'm really learning fast. I have a question... Why can't a piece be "finished" ? You mention that music is art, and therefor, it can't be "finished" :-s.
you can't do a video explaining anything that has to do with sound if you are not able to understand how adjusting your microphone levels work. this is not valid.
This is very wonderful! you are very patient and relaxing to listen to:) Now I just have to find a good piece to learn. I have always wanted to learn some Mozart, I just needed to learn patience. Thank you!
Hi Andrew I have been watching your video's for some weeks now, practising and taking notes of them, and I must say: thank you so much!! I used to watch youtube-lessons that just showed how to play a piece and then copying their motions, but with your lessons I can print-out any piece, and then just practice and play it by myself, with my own feeling! Our local library is full of pieces! By practising every day it feels like the connections in my brain develop even if i am not at the piano! Thx!
hello, im 15 and im really keen on playing a piece called wedding dress by taeyang. its a korean pop song =) i've listened to the recordings online and my frens play. i tried using your methods but i cant seem to get the fingerings and coordinate both hands... esp for the left hand, which consists of 4 main chords.. Any suggestions?
I'm 16 years old and I'm playing on piano over 10 years already, but I'm still learning from your lessons, this is wonderful, that I know all that stuff and information already and I'm still learning.
I wanted to say to you that you teach AMAZING , It gives alot of motivation to me and to all when you explain and express your own feelings to us.
Keep teaching people that way, you will create a new composer with that "power" of yours.
lypus_ Thanks for the lessons man.. this technique of playing in your mind works great.. it does not apply just for music. i got through med school using the same technique..................................
yeah, i meant the fast speed part even faster than the piece is unnecessary.
i start slowly with just one hand , then other for the same part. and i combine them just to see how they work very slowly. a few days later you ll already play that part fluently.
dude i really like ur attitude . u r the best . i really appreciate ur hard work for making these cool and useful videos . thanks alot . keep up the good work . peace.
Andrew I wanted to thank you for posting these piano lesson's on here. I took piano lessons for many years and then I didn't play for awhile and since then I have been playing by ear. I am taking this course as a refresher and to remember how to read music again, so I can play more in church. I also am enjoying the therey I never learned that from any of my teacher. Again thanks!
I still don't understand what the circle of 5th's does either. I think I need it slower and see it played on the piano notes or one chord at a time to figure it out.
Yeah I didn't get it either at first, but say for example you take the E in the middle of the right side of the circle, the D# which is next to it and every shrap above it to the top are in the E major scale, so it has a D#, G#, C#, and F# with all the other notes are normal, so you'd play E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#, E.
As both a guitarist and pianist, I use the circle of fifths EVERY TIME I touch the instrument. Think of the circle of fifths as follows: If you hear your favorite song but you don't have access to the sheet music and would like to play along, how can you use your ear/knowledge to guide the notes, scales, and chords?
Well you can either use your ear and determine which notes sound "good" with the song by using a trial and error method (playing a chromatic scale and eliminating notes that sound "bad") or by quickly tracking the number of sharps or flats.
For instance, if you're playing a song that has a bright sound (i.e.) major and by trial and error you determine that only 1 sharp sounds good, then you know automatically that the key is in G major, and not Cmajor (does not contain sharps) or Dmajor (must have 2 sharps)
Did u say somehere in any of ur previous lessons, which finger to start with a piece??? is it somehoe indicated in the music sheet??? sorry for a dump questions!!!!
hi, thank you for ur reply! what do u think of the circle of fifth? i actually could not understand properly what it is for. do u or anyone else know why one should know that stuff? is it crucial for reading music??? thank you for your replies in advance, cause u r helping me to become a better person
the circle of 5ths helps with key signitures FCGDAEB is the order of sharps and flats c has non so its first count 5 (CDEFG) and you get G it has one sharp and the next is D (GABCD) it has 2 sharps F and C now flats are different the order is backward BEADGCF but you count 4 (sharps are clockwise flats are counter) (CDEF) F has one flat B next is (FGAB) B so B and E are the flats and thats it basically.
yeah theres small numbers (I think but I might be wrong) above the notes to tell you the finger to start with but theres also numbers through out to show you changes
@bobbyatopk I think he said a few videos back that you should read in intervals; instead of c,g,e,b,a,f,a, you should read it as the relations between one note and the next; like 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 5th, and so on. It takes more practice than just reading notes (which you should also learn, if you haven't already) but it becomes a lot easier to read music by reading in intervals
This is a great thing you're doing. I started a few months ago, I've moved alot since then but if I found this it would've helped me so much more. Thank you for this :)
Here's my problem/question: I haven't had a problem learning and playing the notes for each hand individually but no matter how well I can play for either hand it just crumbles when I try to combine them, any lesson that covers that or suggestions to better this?
yeah same here, a little bit of help would be helpful XD, I can learn both hands easily and play them separately but putting them together gets me hand tied~
@ShinigamiSamaBankai Play them combined reeaally slow like someone else have said on here, do it bar for bar. Then maybe one line at a time and don't advance on to the next line until you have it right (Like my teacher said, make sure you play it right at least three times in a row). Doubt it's any other way of doing that.
say have you learnt about the law of attraction? what made me think of that was the part about the athletes; in the book the secret which basically explains the law of attraction, they wrote about that exact same test "if you go there in your mind you'll go there in your body. your mind cannot differentiate reality and the unreal so regardless of which it is your body must give you results"
Dont worry if you haven't because its just a thought but feel free to look it up. its pretty interesting.
@AgitatedCookies its true but depends if u really belive it...or not...... now thats the challenge....... besides our bodys do have limits.....and even tho my mind can still keep goin my body cant....not that im handicap or any thing....but i was an athlete and i kno what my limits are and numerous times did i try and belived i could exceed them....turns out my mind was stronger than my body could handle....i didnt expect results right then and their either.....
wow your amazing teacher my mom got me a piano and i can pretty much remember most of the keys like before i looked for other vids but they didnt make sense and yours does very entertaining too
@prolit: I don´t really know your problem... He´s a very good teacher, authentic; I like the easy uncomplicated way of teaching... I appreciate watching the lessons... and its for free! Who gives lessons for free for the whole world?
On on, Andrew, good work... Stay as cool. (sorry for my english)... Big Thx !!!
yeah dude kicks ass. i subscribed off of the first 5 mins of the first vid,i can't find anyone on youtube cranking out tutorials like this man right here.
i just wish i could find some tutorials on drums at this caliber!!!
call me I liketo make CD´s record with you personal actually I am a Producer in Finland, my number is 56464 Producer in Gramex I need to take you to my CD`S recording bar, If you are near in Finland come and we make good money in here
yea, you're right about that. I've thought about it, but i always felt that when i rehearsed something it came off dry and quite boring, i find i have my most exciting moments when i just fly by the seat of my pants.
Personally this is the most important lesson that you could have taught. So--maybe you should try to do something to make it seem extremely important because honestly, it's mildly boring, BUT! if you actually watch and listen to what you are saying and do it and want it, it helps unbelievably. I've been practicing the chromatic scales and have been having flaws with my second finger, but after mentally projecting it I seldom had a flaw even at fast speeds. :) So this was extremely helpful!
thanx a million for this lesson, I really needed this, I am trying to learn like 4 pieces at the same time, cause I get frustrated with one, and start a new one, hoping it will be easier, but I cant play any of them perfectly. I am self taught, and I realize I was making many mistakes, but now I have learned this method and I am going to try it without a doubt!!! thank you so much
Some ideas in this video are taken from the book "Fundamentals of Piano Practice" by Chuan C. Chang, which is btw available on the net for free download.
thanks for the wonderful lesson. :)

I am taking this course as a refresher and to remember how to read music again, so I can play more in church. I also am enjoying the therey I never learned that from any of my teacher. Again thanks!

I use piano music for accordion. if it has the chirds on top, I use them for the left hand
The left hand on accordion is based on the circle of fifths.

Hi
I still don't understand what the circle of 5th's does either. I think I need it slower and see it played on the piano notes or one chord at a time to figure it out.
Casey10ss 2 years ago 4
same here
TheCameoAfro1 2 years ago
Yeah I didn't get it either at first, but say for example you take the E in the middle of the right side of the circle, the D# which is next to it and every shrap above it to the top are in the E major scale, so it has a D#, G#, C#, and F# with all the other notes are normal, so you'd play E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#, E.
Carlinfan1 2 years ago
As both a guitarist and pianist, I use the circle of fifths EVERY TIME I touch the instrument. Think of the circle of fifths as follows: If you hear your favorite song but you don't have access to the sheet music and would like to play along, how can you use your ear/knowledge to guide the notes, scales, and chords?
SquizzyCat 2 years ago
Well you can either use your ear and determine which notes sound "good" with the song by using a trial and error method (playing a chromatic scale and eliminating notes that sound "bad") or by quickly tracking the number of sharps or flats.
SquizzyCat 2 years ago
For instance, if you're playing a song that has a bright sound (i.e.) major and by trial and error you determine that only 1 sharp sounds good, then you know automatically that the key is in G major, and not Cmajor (does not contain sharps) or Dmajor (must have 2 sharps)

hey.... you know how to teach count the tempo or finding the main note from song you like and create it with base ? I want learn that O_O!!

Did u say somehere in any of ur previous lessons, which finger to start with a piece??? is it somehoe indicated in the music sheet??? sorry for a dump questions!!!!
justuser82 2 years ago
i'm a beginner as well, but i think most sheet music will tell you 1,2..5 to start with.
ranumph 2 years ago
hi, thank you for ur reply! what do u think of the circle of fifth? i actually could not understand properly what it is for. do u or anyone else know why one should know that stuff? is it crucial for reading music??? thank you for your replies in advance, cause u r helping me to become a better person
justuser82 2 years ago
the circle of 5ths helps with key signitures FCGDAEB is the order of sharps and flats c has non so its first count 5 (CDEFG) and you get G it has one sharp and the next is D (GABCD) it has 2 sharps F and C now flats are different the order is backward BEADGCF but you count 4 (sharps are clockwise flats are counter) (CDEF) F has one flat B next is (FGAB) B so B and E are the flats and thats it basically.
7StrangeFruits 2 years ago
and another question? does the music sheet say about the octaves, from which one to start???
justuser82 2 years ago
yeah theres small numbers (I think but I might be wrong) above the notes to tell you the finger to start with but theres also numbers through out to show you changes

there is no such thing as too much practice. the notion that it's bad for you is foolish
axkzk 2 years ago
do you say the name of the note as you play it ( in your head )
like you play c g e
should you say c g e in your head as you play each note ?
bobbyatopk 2 years ago
@bobbyatopk I think he said a few videos back that you should read in intervals; instead of c,g,e,b,a,f,a, you should read it as the relations between one note and the next; like 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 5th, and so on. It takes more practice than just reading notes (which you should also learn, if you haven't already) but it becomes a lot easier to read music by reading in intervals
kurrizzle 2 years ago
ah thanks that is helpful! i think i intuitively do it a bit like that any way (with intervals)
bobbyatopk 2 years ago
This is a great thing you're doing. I started a few months ago, I've moved alot since then but if I found this it would've helped me so much more. Thank you for this :)
Here's my problem/question: I haven't had a problem learning and playing the notes for each hand individually but no matter how well I can play for either hand it just crumbles when I try to combine them, any lesson that covers that or suggestions to better this?
ShinigamiSamaBankai 2 years ago 44
yeah same here, a little bit of help would be helpful XD, I can learn both hands easily and play them separately but putting them together gets me hand tied~
rubbadude 2 years ago 2
@ShinigamiSamaBankai i would just say play extreeeeeemely slowly until you can play it tight, only then start getting your speed up
dayglo98 1 year ago
@ShinigamiSamaBankai Play them combined reeaally slow like someone else have said on here, do it bar for bar. Then maybe one line at a time and don't advance on to the next line until you have it right (Like my teacher said, make sure you play it right at least three times in a row). Doubt it's any other way of doing that.
rivercah 1 year ago
@ShinigamiSamaBankai This is my exact problem too, I can do both hands individually but seperating them is just nearly impossible!

say have you learnt about the law of attraction? what made me think of that was the part about the athletes; in the book the secret which basically explains the law of attraction, they wrote about that exact same test "if you go there in your mind you'll go there in your body. your mind cannot differentiate reality and the unreal so regardless of which it is your body must give you results"
Dont worry if you haven't because its just a thought but feel free to look it up. its pretty interesting.
AgitatedCookies 2 years ago
@AgitatedCookies its true but depends if u really belive it...or not...... now thats the challenge....... besides our bodys do have limits.....and even tho my mind can still keep goin my body cant....not that im handicap or any thing....but i was an athlete and i kno what my limits are and numerous times did i try and belived i could exceed them....turns out my mind was stronger than my body could handle....i didnt expect results right then and their either.....

these advice actually help!! =]
Cam544 2 years ago 3
