The great thing about the fox that people seem to forget sometimes, he wasnt "just" a super fast beer drinker. He wrote great songs, loved to make people laugh and enjoyed life about as much as humanly possible. Well, The Fox clearly was/is very, very fast at beer drinking. Maybe even the fastest, although I never saw any stopwatches around to verify his claim. Also, not to detract from his talent & skills, which he certainly has a lot of, but he never seems to do anything more than drink, at most, about 500ml of beer out of a large mug. He never shotguns, drinks from a bottle or with a straw or does multiple small drinks or shows any ability to drink a LARGE amount of beer quickly and all at once.

Was the world's fastest beer drinker - he died in 2000 from prostate cancer. I was fortunate to be friends with he and his wife Nancy. The fastest chug I've ever seen was with the Whaler's Club in Simi Valley. They had special scales that displayed time digitally to 2 decimal places - place a full mug of beer on one, pick it up the timer would start and would not stop until the mug was placed back on it. He recorded a time of .69 seconds. An incredible drinker and amazing person.

Two things attributed to his ability - first, he had an incredible volume capacity in his mouth, and second, he learned how to control the gag reflex so liquid could just flow into the stomach. The #1 key though is the mouth volume - in speed drinking you don't need to swallow right away, just pour the liquid into your mouth as fast as possible to get the empty glass back down (and Bill was able to fit well over 12oz comfortably in his mouth).

And yet, when I watch this video again, every clip they show of The Fox drinking indicates that all he had was a larger-than-normal mouth capacity that he used to gulp all the beer at once and then swallow it. Sorry, kind of misleading. I can't do it (boy have I tried) but have a couple of friends that learned how (they don't have the mouth volume though). It is a gulp, but that is to just get it going. That's where control of the reflex comes in - just hold it open longer. It kind of shotguns into the stomach after from the gulp, kind of like a vacuum. This is how talented drinkers pound pitchers or large steins - it is a series of very long gulps in this manner. Sure wish I could!
