i now live in australia, but i spent 27 years of my life in south africa, yes i write in english because unfortunately i have lost some of my afrikaans writing. there are a few things i miss back in south africa that is the great hospitality of the boarevolk.
my heratage is dutch my forefarthers came to south africa on the first fleet.
As for the comments lamenting the fact that the Afrikaners could not stand together – the real problem of the Afrikaners was that it never really had the kind of leadership who understood that a nation could not be built upon an us-versus-them mentality. That would always lead to the unfair treatment of others. Jan Smuts was perhaps the closest, but he clearly did not have the ability to convince the Afrikaners that it had to share what little it had in order build a better future.
Excellent TV miniseries that accurately portrays the suffering of the Afrikaners after the Boer War. Hopefully gems such as these will become available on the net so that more people can get an insight into this period of our history.
@fotosoundful Heu?? ""Boere nationalism, not my cup of tea"". That is a funny remark, because the Dutch introduced thea in England during the invasion of William III in 1688 in England. The Dutch used thea 2 generations befor they introduced it in England. English thea doesn't exitst. Like almost everything it is a Dutch copie.
I will never forget what the English people did to us in that war. Still today you can see it in them. They don't want to learn Afrikaans. They believe they are to good for it.
@mornevdm1 My Mom's side of the family was held in comsentration camps, My dad side of the family only came to SA a generation later - from Scotland. My dad, and myself have been brought up as Afrikaners (Hius taal Afrikaans). My dads family are now all Afrikaans speaking - from the first gen in SA. My pa het in Angola geveg. Ek kan nie besluit of jy besig is om te veralgemeen, - of sommer net kak te praat nie. Vok jou - met lof.
@mornevdm1 Oh yes - you write it as if you were there! What happened back then is the same as apartheid - it has got nothing to do with me - why should I get blamed - the same for the English!
take a dutchman, the kind of dutchman that faught againt all the might of spain, intermix him with the inflexable french hogh notes. take him threw 8 generations of war, put him in a country sutable for the huntsman, marksman and ryder. put a finer temper in him threw the bible, and you get a afrikaner boer. a nation so strong that it took the brittish empire 191 000 000 pounds, 3 years and 480 000 soldiers to conquer the 2 poorest smallest states in the world.
@helgardmuller1983 You forgot the 95 black you dudes have in your blood.. The Khosian are in all African tribes as the true indeginous to SA. The Afrikaner are very much part of Africa.. I respect you dudes as a black man. However, you seperate from us, then you lose respect from me..
@mkwapower On behalf of the Boers, I'd like to thank you. In a world where you are taught to be ashamed of yourself, it is heartwarming. I wish there were more people like you from all walks of life. I pray that my people will see the difference between being proud of their heritage and being stubborn and narrowminded. Our determination is what allowed us to survive, but when idle, it turns to rigidity. To adapt thinking and changing your principles are not the same thing, we must realise this
@helgardmuller1983 You are so right. The Dutch defeated the English in the 2nd and 3th Anglo-Dutch War and invaded England in 1667 and 1688. In this English defeat the Dutch king of England William III created the British Empire. And the Boers, Dutch kolonists in South Africa defeated the English in the Black Week what almost led to the bankrupty of the Bank of England created by William III, who introduced new things like thea in England
Bravo Boere, as a Hollander sal ek altijd Afrikaner Wees
