The difference between these two in this match up was desire. Mary wasn't together in the first set and allowed Venus to white wash her. Then look at the results in the second, you couldn't separate them by a hairs breadth. Being a Mary Pierce fan bought out anxiety I never thought I had!
Winning a slam now for a girl boils down to nothing more than being the one who keeps her shit together, not caving in to nerves.
Wozniacki would never have been a number 1 ten years ago, Sharapova would never have made it to two GS finals out of the past three, and the likes of Na Li, Schiavone or Azarenka certainly wouldn't have one slams...
They don't compare to players like Mauresmo, Capriati, Hingis, Seles, Davenport, Vaidisova, Henin...
Pierce's dramatic intensity was most entertaining, and when she got her clean ball-striking going full throttle, she could beat any number one in a grand slam final.
Ah, tennis was graced with such variety, such talent, such different styles in those days -in the men's game as well.
It's amazing how around the mid 2000s it all started deteriorating with the advent of a new generation. Djoko and Nadal matches are simply boring, and the women's game appears to have sunk to an all time low.
Pierce deserved to win the second set, with shots like 5:576:25 and 7:48 but, for some reason, the Williams sisters often show up being the best in those situations. That can't be coincidence. Even though I'm not their biggest fan, I will be sad when they leave the tour, because they are definitely something special.
say what you want about pierce. she was probably the cleanest ball striker in all of womens tennis. man she hit a heavy ball, and painted the lines too! if she was just a little faster.
Venus Williams screaming after every point is a great way to intimidate and wear down your opponant successfully. She reminds me of a female street fighter.
She is so talented in the first place why use dirty tactics like that.
At least Mary did form some form of opposition to her!
@HairyInLondon1 After every point? I don't recall her having screamed after a single point. And even if she had, your logic is flawed, as I doubt that Mary Pierce (or any tennis player) is as weak-minded as to be intimidated by screaming.
Venus wanted to win so badly that year. This was the tournament that showed everybody she was still the shit after a disappointing 2004. She is amazing.
@donlyjeronimo how so. Craybas in the 4th round is very easy. It was supposed to be Serena. Then quarters Pierce on grass is an easy opponent, she is a sucky grass courter who rarely gets that far. That was supposed to be Henin. Semis and finals Sharapova and Davenport. OK tough opponents, but still not the toughest imaginable.
I cant believe that Mary Pierce never got beyond the quarter finals at Wimbledon in her carrer compaired to winning the French & Australian Open and getting to the final of the US Open. Think grass was never her favourite surface.
I agree with milot1masha, the second set was one of the best sets I've ever seen.
Venus declared "This could have been a final match, how well she played". Venus is sweet for saying that. And it was true, Mary really played awesome in the second set.

Mary was never good with her feet. That's why she never was great and good enough. And she had a bad attitude on the court. Typical french!

@ylaborde i agree with you the 2005 wimebledon you could tell she wanted this more than anything and i wish she had that drive again

Mary would win on clay or hard, but Venus on centre court at Wimbledon is simply unplayable at times.
EmilieSagae 10 months ago
@EmilieSagae They met at RG in 04, Venus won 6-1,6-3. But yes, Mary's chances are best on a really fast hardcourt or clay if Venus is dodgy
ARZ1987 9 months ago
@ARZ1987 I meant playing like she did here of course! Mary on a bad day is a lot worse than Venus on a bad day, haha.

Venus defeated Hantuchova in the third round, when she was one of the rising stars
Venus defeated Mary Pierce, French Open and U.S. Open Finalist for 2005
Venus defeated Maria Sharapova defending champion and held #1 briefly in 2005
Venus defeated Lindsay Davenport ranked #1 in 2005, who was also the AO Finalist
So yes, it wasn't the toughest imaginable but a pretty big mountain to climb.
