Venus Williams vs Mary Pierce 2005 Wimbledon Highlights

The difference between these two in this match up was desire. Mary wasn't together in the first set and allowed Venus to white wash her. Then look at the results in the second, you couldn't separate them by a hairs breadth. Being a Mary Pierce fan bought out anxiety I never thought I had!

Winning a slam now for a girl boils down to nothing more than being the one who keeps her shit together, not caving in to nerves.

Wozniacki would never have been a number 1 ten years ago, Sharapova would never have made it to two GS finals out of the past three, and the likes of Na Li, Schiavone or Azarenka certainly wouldn't have one slams...

They don't compare to players like Mauresmo, Capriati, Hingis, Seles, Davenport, Vaidisova, Henin...

Pierce's dramatic intensity was most entertaining, and when she got her clean ball-striking going full throttle, she could beat any number one in a grand slam final.

Ah, tennis was graced with such variety, such talent, such different styles in those days -in the men's game as well.

It's amazing how around the mid 2000s it all started deteriorating with the advent of a new generation. Djoko and Nadal matches are simply boring, and the women's game appears to have sunk to an all time low.

Pierce deserved to win the second set, with shots like 5:57 6:25 and 7:48 but, for some reason, the Williams sisters often show up being the best in those situations. That can't be coincidence. Even though I'm not their biggest fan, I will be sad when they leave the tour, because they are definitely something special.

@donlyjeronimo how so. Craybas in the 4th round is very easy. It was supposed to be Serena. Then quarters Pierce on grass is an easy opponent, she is a sucky grass courter who rarely gets that far. That was supposed to be Henin. Semis and finals Sharapova and Davenport. OK tough opponents, but still not the toughest imaginable.

I cant believe that Mary Pierce never got beyond the quarter finals at Wimbledon in her carrer compaired to winning the French & Australian Open and getting to the final of the US Open. Think grass was never her favourite surface.

Venus declared "This could have been a final match, how well she played". Venus is sweet for saying that. And it was true, Mary really played awesome in the second set.
