  • This is very, very good singing. Not exactly my taste for this particular work, but who cares? This woman can really sing. P.S. Lovers of Ernani, check out Anna Tomowa Sintow at the MET gala. Cosmic.

  • Beautiful performance of a difficult aria. The trills were beautifully and effortlessly sung.

  • She sang it exceptionally well, especially the trills.

  • Brava! EVERYTHING is there--color, size, flexibility, expression.

  • my favourite rendition of this aria. Bravissima Vaness!!! on thursday i'll see ernani and my singing teacher will sing the role of Elvira - can't wait!!!

  • Ms. Vaness has the dark sound and evennes through a wide range needed for this rep. Her low register is full and connected (as an undergrad, she studied as a mezzo) and her upper registered is lyrical (not shouted). Her agiity is MUCH better than many who sing this aria. I heard her in Trovatore and it really suited her. These roles need to strike a balance between the dramatic sound and the lyricism and agility which I think she does much better than most! (and an actual trill!)

  • Furthermore ... after reading other comments. You guys need a bit more reading on music history. Bel canto = composers from the time and likes of Bellini and Donizetti.

    :-)

  • @cefvicente Ehem... That's a extremely simplified and somehow wrong definition of bel canto.

  • I agree she is great. But ... not a drammatico ... not even close. Just a really fantastic singer who can manage heavier roles because of an amazing technique.

Believe me ... when you hear a dramatic soprano live, you'll know they are one.

  • Carol is GREAT!! She's a wonderful soprano drammatico!

  • I like Carol's Verdi repertoire. She sings with a smoky, rich, dark soprano voice & she's fully capable of Verdi heroine roles like this one in Ernani, Leonora in Trovatore & Forza Del Destino. She was in the 80's a sort of throwback to Leontyne Price, who was the Verdi Queen. She sings this aria beautifully. Carol was one of the last good Verdi singers & bel canto singers. And of course her Mozart is perfection.

  • @MastersoftheOpera I don't see many things in common between Vaness and Price. I don't even consider Price a good Verdin singer AT ALL. But Vaness... oh yeah!

  • @DiomedesDioscuro What!? Price not a good Verdian?! How do you explain her interpretation of Aida or the Trovatore Leonore?!

Your gross miscalculation aside, Carol Vaness is exquisite in this video.

  • @edgrow I'm not saying she never sang any Verdi quite well. But I can't consider her a great Verdian, not at all. I don't think it's a matter of miscalculation but of disagreement.

  • Authenticate dramatic soprano with a beautiful agility. C. Vaness is dazzling of vocal beauty. Thank you thank you thank you dear coloraturafan !

  • Carol Vaness is sickening.

    Amazing performance.

    d.

  • Try to drink hormons this would help darling and listen to ROSA PONSELLE or ZINKA MILANOVA or to LEONTYNE PRICE ....you have to learn more about the great music which is symphonic and needs mature voices with more COLORE COLORARE AND THEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT VERDI CHANGED WITH THE BELCANTOSOPRANOPARTS....

    VIVA Verdi!

And I like la Vaness with her sublime nervous liric voice for Traviata Elettra Lucretia Borgia Lucia di...etc.

  • i know these ladies you mention very well. Verdi didn't change bel canto, he changed italian opera. donizetti, bellini, and pacini are the ones who changed bel canto. donizetti and verdi were great friends, and verdi was greatly influenced by donizetti's style. Zinka Milanov is over rated in my opinion, at least Ponselle and Price had magnificent voices that could MOVE and sing trills, as well as all the written fioriture.

  • the BEST I've ever heard this.

  • infinitely better than her Trovatore on youtube

  • This is about as close to perfection as we get. A Full lyric singing this role, with all the bel canto ornamentation it needs.

  • this is interesting and not such bad but the volume of the voice is never enough for this music of Verdi... all the colours and hughe which is a need for this role...but OK she did her best! Brava

  • shut up. you know nothing about Verdi. Verdian repertoire was not meant to be screamed, he was a BEL CANTO composers. Just as there are markings for pianissimo, they should be followed. Stop listening to horrible singers who can't sing fioriture, and start researching bel canto, which Verdi is a part of.

  • listen to her rendition of Donna Anna - "don ottavio, son morta...Or sai chi l'onore.

    Then you'll get it :)

  • Great. I really admire her. Thank you for the post!

  • Wow. Excellent. Carol never ceases to amaze me. She is just a superior artist and a super kind lady. Love her.

  • This is one of the very few performances of this aria whereby the trills were cleanly and clearly articulated. She made it look easy! The tessitura suited Ms. Vaness's voice perfectly too. Wonderful and exemplary singing.

  • Very nice. Today she'd be a superstar.

  • and in her day, she was!

  • Just amazing! Nothing else to say.

  • What a sensational voice! Surely one of the finest singers of her generation. Solid technique combined with that plummy, feminine sound - yes please!
