Sorry my strong language on this thread back then. It's about a year on and I'm learning _not_ to play like walter horton. He's my favourite harmonica player, I even named myself after him (see username). several years ago It was I was sitting on the carpet listening to walter play lamenting how much worse I play than him and figured it out that I had to learn tongue blocking and now I don't play any other way. I need people to play the blues with.
Listen to big walter's "An Offer You Can't Refuse" You'll never say BW played too many notes. Absolute economy of playing, nowhere to hide. Perfect tone, brilliant and sparse note selection. Personally, my favorite Big walter recording, because there's nothin but BW's harp, vocals, and a very humble backing guitar. Recorded in the studio, about 1965, Walter's never been more relaxed.
Aloliver, that may well be one of the best synopses of Big Walter's playing I've heard. Big Walter's one of those harp blowers who you have to listen to repeatedly just to catch all the subtleties in that wonderful "econom of playing." Thanks.
@aloliver331 My favorite too. That's Robert Nighthawk on guitar - that album is the absolute primer on how to back up a harmonica player. Robert was no slouch on harp himself, especially if it's true that he also recorded as Robert Lee McCoy (I have no way of verifying this but it's generally held to be true). Check out his recordings.

Big Walter, what a trip. Saw his room in Chicago, kept it locked from his family. Inside three or four kittens were walking around. Wouldn't eat a banana (neither would Homesick James) from a roadside store in Kansas. On the other hand, one night at the Nature's Table in Champaign, Illinois, when Guido Sinclair joined the band on Sax and I bowed out, Walter hit that sound and timing that he's famous for - Walking By Myself, Jimmy Rogers - and time stood still.
Yours is the third real life account story..First was peter madcat ruths going to walters room for harp lessons. Second tom balls at the ashgrove when tom asked walter about a song and walter cussed him out! blessings
It's great to see this on utube. To my ears Walter is really the Biggest one ever. Listen to that monster tone on "Evening Sun" with Shines or "Bloody Murder" with Otis Spann or his own late Blind Pig's records. I think that Annie Raines is one of the very few harp players able to reproduce it at 100 % today.
Of course she can`t touch him, but it's a real good transcription (listen to her on "Wayward Son" with Ronnie Earl on Alligator). Anyway, I LOVE Sugar Ray's version of "I Love My Baby", and the guy really can sing!
I love this clip - I saw Honeyboy Edwards last year, he was still going strong at 90! Big Walter's mugging for the camera is priceless ... and does anyone have any doubt that when he bends over at the end of the video he's reaching for a bottle? :-)

May favorite recording of Walter Horton, too. the guitarplayer on these recordings was Robert Nighthawk by the way.
I like to invite you to my blues cartoons - each one minute long. I did one on JIMMY REED and another on SONNY BOY II,

@DaleKingHarp
I do not know if you know it:CHESS was interested in recording Reed but only with their STUDIO BAND incl. Little Walter.
Then-unknown Reed refused that offer&said he will only record in his OWN JIMMY REED SOUND. The man was not only an original artist but had guts, too.

Yeah Sugar Blue is good, but too many notes. Over plays himself. Big Walter had that problem but not as bad as Sugar Blue...Love Big Walter!!

Annie is a good player (local to me), but she can't touch Big Walter. Sugar Ray gets close, but still no cigar. same with Portnoy.

Haven't heard wayward son -gotta check it out.
If I could sing like any "living" blues singer -it would be Sugar Ray -soooooo sweet!

Have y'ever listened to Sugar Blue? Woo!
But you are right, Big Walter was incredible and really can't be beat.

I think Sugar Blue plays too many notes. Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller)), that's a tasty player.
