You're right man....!!! Sometimes we try to do some extraordinary things to achieve extraordinary effects, but, sometimes smartness makes the difference! I always use Clipping Mask to put pic inside of shapes, but I NEVER HAD THOUGHT I could assign colors to a brush with a Clipping Mask!!

Nice vid. You could also use a Gradient Adjustment Layer which gives you even more flexibility plus numerous other options like changing the gradient direction and adjusting the gradient stops and colors... all non-destructively.
