Look at players like Maa Nonu, Shane Williams or Ritchie McCaw, all incredible athletes with different strengths. Even modern props are very athletic. Btw a sumo would obv get KOd by a top boxer!

@zxkuta no, man... to be honest, i didn't even knew this sport existed till like weeks ago... they hardly broadcast anything that isn't soccer on open tv (except by formula one or internationall volleyball)... on cable you can get a more wide range of sports, but in any case afl has never shown up... =/ a shame, in fact... we're extremely narrow minded when it comes to sports over here... i almost had to trade a kidney for some rugby boots...

Soccer, Rugby and Gaelic football are all older than Aussie Rules but Aussie Rules is the oldest CODIFIED major football sport in the world, codified in 1859. Soccer codified in 1863, Rugby in 1871, Gaelic in 1887.
AFL major influences come from a specific version (or versions) of Rugby here in Australia, Gaelic football and an old Aboriginal game called Marngrook.

@JustinRSoles don't feel bad the majority of Australians don't understand this game. AFL is only followed down south the rest of the country follow Rugby League and Rugby Union.

lol..the rest of the country? By "down south" are you including SA, WA and Tas, where there is zero NRL presence? They tried there and failed dismally. On the flipside there are already two QLD teams and a second NSW team on the way next year in AFL. Grab a reality check mate. AFL absolutely dominates NRL and Union, both financially and in terms of fan base.

@applecross20 QLD & NSW make up <52% of the countries population. Kids in these states call it gayFL. It's only Big in Vic, SA & TAS, and Melbourne is the only major market it rules. One asked for the teams in QLD and NSW, that's the VFL having a toss and trying to expand the game, funny NRL expands into other countries while AFL is in a civil war. Tas doesn't even have a team. The games about as credible Ricky Nixons reputation. It's big down south, not on the east or up north.

You had a good run through the 80s but even Sydneysiders are starting to get jack of rugby league judging by the crowd attendances. Anything over 15,000 is considered a bumper crowd. Can't blame them. Has there ever been a more shit boring sport to watch live? TV isn't much better mind you, where commentators can go 5 minutes without saying a word.

The game is as physical as any other (much more demanding than this AFL shit which just looks like kicking and catching.) To play rugby at a high level you need a hell of a lot more than that.

@scottclements78 Im talking about rugby UNION not league. League has big hits but the players generally dont have the skills and athletisism of union. A couple of rugby league players not making it as AFL players doesnt prove anything. Try getting the best AFL players and throwing them into a Super 15 game. They would get torn to peices, I guarentee it.

@scottclements78 Union and league are two very different sports. You say 'rugby doesnt have endurance' - rediculous. Rugby players train to compete at an extremely high intensity for a full 80 minutes. It requires strength endurance aswell as cardio. Saying they are 'fat and slow' is simply incorrect. Look at players like Maa Nonu, Shane Williams or Ritchie McCaw, all incredible athletes with different strengths. Even modern props are very athletic. Btw a sumo would obv get KOd by a top boxer!
