  • It's a shame that lyrical pride in America beckons only derision from the entertainment industry in the U.S., country music aside. Had the Reid brothers been from the states and spent their careers writing of their love for America, very few people would know who they are. They are brilliant songwriters.

  • I am a fan of The Proclaimers, I love their music. I come here to enjoy their music and videos. It is disturbing to me that people come here with the intent of making others feel bad about themselves. The name calling and the arguing that goes on here is shameful. Just beacuse someone has a different view than your own does NOT make them an idiot. Let's get back to enjoying the videos, and the music.

  • This came out the month I was leaving Scotland for the USA boy did it make me cry and still does

  • I think the reason I like this song so much, is that I have no clue what they're saying.

  • love the originality that these two pillocks express in this track the best proclaimers song for sure

  • haha the first part sounds like "When you call well you SICK FUCK a letter from America" thumbs up if you agree

  • @MMAfan30 a thumbs down... just to spite you.

  • @MMAfan30 i know, it's kinda hilarious!

  • Love this song; it reminds me of my great-grandfather's notes in his bible that he wrote as he sailed away from Scotland in the 1850s, watching the receding view, wondering if he'd ever return. He didn't.

  • One of the reasons I love the Proclaimers is their just incredible vocals. Yes I love that they sing in their own real accents but beyond that the just ODD little vocal bits they throw in, the lyrics and the accompanying background vocals. Maybe I just have a dead ear but their songs are like good movies when I keep catching new things in the vocals that I never noticed before :)

  • I was just reading that this song was written by Gerry Rafferty, who just passed away this week. Loss of a great song writer and talent. Thank you for posting the video, I forgot how much fun these guys are.

  • It's amusing that they'd use "Lewes" and "Skye" as endpoints in the UK. I'd go for perhaps "Penzance" and "Shetland"...

  • @shmuli9 Um... why? If I left America for anywhere else I might note Los Angeles and New York City as end points but I'd damn sure mention Dallas and Denver which would be the places I would most personally miss regardless of whether they bracketed the rest of the US between them or not lol. I am sure they noted places they would miss or that meant something to them that they would no longer get to go to.

  • @shmuli9 They are NOTsinging about leaving the U.K. They are singing about leave THEIR homeland which would be SCOTLAND.

  • @karvysgirl Eh... I didn't say they were leaving the UK... Where did you get THAT idea?

  • This reminds me of my husband who served with the 1st batt Scots Guards. We used to play this all the time whilst posted to Germany. Now posted to Wales. Looking for the equivalent :)

  • fav song ever! and i want to live in scotland so badly!!

  • fav song ever!

  • Makes me want to live in scotland , where I'm from . and I live in america.

    it's fucked up.

  • The Scots. The race the Irish wished they evolved into...

  • Great song !.

  • It's a pity they treated people as less valuable than sheep, causing people to leave in the first place. Same shit happened in Ireland; neither was better for it.

But it doesn't hurt to think about your past; just don't glorify the mistakes.

  • my english teacher is in this video!!!

  • Will you send some Ghey AIDS from America

  • Pity the bible is seen as the "Biobull" at 1:52.

    What's "bull" about this?-

"Love God, love one another, feed the hungry, house the homeless, clothe the destitute, tend the sick, visit the prisoners, look after the poor"-Jesus of Nazareth

  • @TungstenKid Are you retarded? Its their accent you moron

  • @TungstenKid Personally I love that. Have you read the whole bible? It's not all peace and love.

  • @TungstenKid Just noticed your comment here... in case you were still wondering and/or concerned, the "Biobull" was the Scottish translation of the bible. It was translated into Scots (or Scottish Gaelic, can't remember) so that it could be read and appreciated by those who did not speak English. Just as it was initially translated from the Aramaic, the Latin, etc. And just as it continues to be translated into many different languages.

  • @TungstenKid Biobull is the Scottish Gaelic word for Bible. They're not saying the Bible is bull.

  • Why is embedding disabled? I wanted to post the link in a forum to let people know what a great song this is.

  • This song is good but my fave is still I'm Gonna Be :D

  • why why why am I EVER surprised that the Proclaimers have written and performed an excellent, heartfelt, and beautiful song? I've often called them my "sleeper favorite band," but in reality pound for pound they are my favorite. I have never heard a bit of fat on any of their albums. This song has actually made me want to discover my ancestral roots now.

  • Fuckin love frankie boyle

  • I would never tell these guys to tone down their accents! Besides, Scottish accents are sexy

  • @BlueSilverStars Im Scottish and my accent is not like that

  • Fuck me they were ugly, always admired their yellow teeth !!

  • Just one of those songs xx

  • Just one of those songs xxxx

  • I've just left Scotland. Those of you from Edinburgh may understand this confusion.... I had my leaving night in the Hibs Club and the band playing there didn't know any Proclaimers songs. My family wanted to have this played for me. (I live in America now) But how weird!!!!

  • I'm from Scotland. It's not all it's cracked upto be. Another western country crippled by debt. Think that's why folk went to America in the first place, for a fresh start. Ironic that it's America that has caused the downfall of freedom and prosperity with the God damn Federal bank. We're all doomed I tells ya. Still, we can enjoy Craig and Charlie in the mean time. Peace.

  • You need to play nice kids, there is enough room in the sandbox for everyone.

  • This is such a great song! I can't help singing along.

  • ....what an absolutely BEAUTIFUL song...........brings tears to my eyes......thank you Proclaimers.......

  • FROM AMERICAAAAAAAAA- this song is beautiful! They have such a unique sound.

  • First Proclaimers song I ever heard....moved me then and has done so ever since, more than all that other stuff. From the heart.

  • Beautiful, moving songs. Helps me see the other side of emigration.

  • they were ugly as hell back then, but incredibly talented.

  • @lewigimole you're probably a fat English prick who would never get off his fat arse and say something like that to a Scot without the anonymity of the internet between you. SENT HIM HOMEWARD TAE THINK AGAIN; MOAN AHEAD FANNY BAWS

  • @stufflol actually im a 6ft 4 rugby player. suck my dick

  • They are cool- love the Scottish accents

  • love them love them love them

song makes me a bit homesick though ;)

  • These guys are great! They're a credit to Scotland!

  • Didn't know Frankie Boyle could sing.

    Joking apart, awesome song.

  • They act like illegal immigrants. haha

  • i've been to skye and it was so beautiful. i was the last guest of the hotel on1988 right before winter.

  • PROCLAIMERS R GODS N U

  • In the video they are at Edinburgh airport, but the aircraft landing appears to be at Glasgow.

Didn't emigrate very far, did they?

  • @goldenstar9 remember wen u go to glasgow its like a nother world with the technoligy 40 years behind evryone els lmao

  • luv the song sang it at school! does anybody know how to get a picture for there profile?:)

  • I wish! I figured everything else out, but that one escapes me

  • God Bless Scotland!!!

  • @eddy7elly7

Good auld Sean was born in Edinburgh in 1930. Being Scottish is about the land and the tradition (which was mostly romanticised by Sir Walter). It would be nice to see Gerard making a go of one of the traditional stories of our nation, as you say, but as long as the actor captures the spirit of what we live here, job done.

    All the Best

  • Wow.. that's some accent coming through this song. O_o

  • Cheers Buddsteinica. Great vid, great band and great accent. I love these guys.

  • Long time ago but (very) nice!

  • John Leslie.

    Naked Video.

    The Krankies.

Goddam Scottish culture is like God's message to Earth to drink more Irn Bru.

  • Shame Braveheart William Wallace was really Australian (Mel Gibson)

Rob Roy was Irish ( Liam Neeson)

and Sean Connery was in fact an Englishman whose alias by deed poll was James Bond.

My history teacher got the sack and when I quoted these well known facts to the guy in the gift shop at Edinburgh castle it went down like a lead balloon.

I love Scotland but please guys,do not let them use anyone non scottish to play a scottish hero again. I heard Sly Stallone is to audition for 'Wor Wullie'

  • Really? In alI have ever read about Sean Connery, It states that hes is a Scot

  • @karvysgirl

You got me, he is a true Scot.

Could you get your hands on an English dictionary and look under'tongue in cheek' Thanks

  • Reminds me of the past , sweet memories and all the things we do not have in this day and age.

    RICKETS,THE PLAGUE,LEPROSY,THAT SORT OF STUFF.

THEY DON'T MAKE IT LIKE THAT THESE DAYS!

  • Are they related to Frankie Boyle?

  • Comment removed

  • @kkly27

    Yes, their Scottish!

  • no they're not

  • great stuff.their 'cap in hand' i put alongside the corries 'parcel o rogues'.both say it all about the english treatment of us. the gits.

  • give indipendence to england

  • I think we shud cut them free alryt

  • take a luuke.. love this song!!

  • Great song, great band, great country.. come on Scottish independence, from Dundee! :D

  • Class song, class music, class lyrics....

  • I like that they sing in their proper accents, rather than some half arsed affected american twang like lots of singers seem to adopt. fair play.

  • @MartinRVUK

I'd sure like to try living there for a while. I love all the varieties of music.

  • @MartinRVUK

Too right, mate. They even wrote a song about how the record company tried to get them to change their accents and they refused. Nice one, lads.

  • @dommywaddle "Throw the R Away"

  • @MartinRVUK there gonna obviously sing in the accent they feel comfortable with

  • @MartinRVUK im an american and i like that they keep there accents also i dont understand why they try to avoid that i think its awsome

  • @MartinRVUK Yes. They are one of the few acts to do so. "Petula Clark" often sang her hits with a SE English ("RP") accent, like "The othuh man's grahs is olways greenuh"... Why people seem to #1 think they HAVE to write in English ("diggi-loo,diggi-ley, life is going my way" and "ding-a-dong" might be English, but it's NONSENSICAL English) and #2 have to "sing North American" is beyond me...

  • @MartinRVUK Singers don't lose their accent on purpose; It just happens naturally for some people. If you google something like "why do people lose their accent while singing" you should be able to find a pretty good explanation.

  • @FerroJackify29 It's true. When I sing, you can't hear my Southern (SE USA) accent at all. Certain songs require that people lose whatever accent they may have in order to sing more clearly. My choir teacher says it's all about extending your vowels and loosening your jaw. I also like that these guys sing in their natural accents. It's beautiful.

  • This song could be about me.

  • Well there is "only" 5 million of us...

  • C'm on, I live in Scotland not far from Edinburgh and I still think that Ireland is pure awesomeness. Have to admit I love Scotland though...Do you not like Ireland? Everytime I ask a Scot what he thinks about Ireland and Irish people, he always say: Beautiful (country) and friendly (people). That's what I think as well.

  • Oh no I do, I love it. But just had some great times in Edinburgh to be honest. Good people and a beautiful city.

  • Got you. Edinburgh's great and the accent is lovely over there. And a lot easier to understand compared to where I live lol. Anyway, Scotland and Ireland rock.

  • @Timefliesbye

what do you mean by a skirt?

Its a kilt never never poke fun at a culture that has a knife as a part of its national dress LOL

  • @ScotsLyon I'm more afraid of the Irish, they carry TNT under their skirts :)

But is a damned skirt, the sooner you admit it the sooner you can go back to wearing underpants.

  • @ScotsLyon lol

  • North America, ever hear of it?

  • It's true. They're keeping Canada on the North American continent now.

  • Get a map of the world, you may learn something.

Then again is Scotland in England?

  • Letter from America, not Letter from North America.

  • The only time i ever heard this was Decco singing it in 'The Commitments'. Good song.

  • they are so 1960's sounding, it's so cool!

  • They are AMAZING

  • This is such a great song,i cant get it out of my head!.....

  • the singing sounds really cool xD

but it's hard to understand :[

  • They may be difficult to understand due to their Scottish accents, If you keep listening you can get used to it and then its easyto understand

  • Piss off johnnyharpe, just be sure to never bring ye arse to Scotland or Ireland cuz if ye do,ye will not like the welcoming!

  • Love the little girl with her drum toward the end. Also enjoy the song for all the meanings hidden in it, some definantly meant, some they probably didn't know were there. :)

  • Jesus, I hope for your sake that you're still in primary school. Hope you have friends and that you won't go through life sooooooooooooooooooo alone.

  • Way to ruin a great moment with the music I LOVE. with all your bickering and B.S. Thank you for your backwards point of view

  • Tomorrow the HOLLAND-SCOTLAND

game...What better way than a brilliant

Proclaimers-song to get us all in the mood!

  • I call this the sand bag song...

  • Ok, all I want to say here is that I'm withdrawing my nomination for this position. Having seen the in fighting that takes place in societies around election times, I am convinced that this is not something that I want to be involved with. I genuinely regret it, I enjoyed my time on committee. But sin e.

  • For Johnnysharpe - I'm still very happy with America, as I'm sure most people are with their own country. I think the best thing each person can do is try their very best to make their own place in the country better. Start small and work your way up to a better country.

  • brilliant!

  • UK is no better than USA at the moment

  • Comment removed
