I've never left the sponge out. There's good bacteria on that sponge, I'm not sure how the tank would react without it.

My reds are breeding too. Did you remove the lower filter sponge from your PCA wetdry for better flow. I have the 125 and have heard others have done this too, but I have'nt as of yet. When I take it out to rinse it, the tank does flow quicker to the return pump.

I doubt it. cuz malawis would have eaten them a lon long ago.

Not all plants will gett eaten, just take a look at my 900Litre.. thats all real plants.
