My Dad intodruced me to Johnny's music when I was 10 years old, back in 1974. I became a guitar player because of guys like Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins.
I love Johnny Horton, Thank you for posting his music, my dad seen him in concert when he was much younger, ole george can do this song pretty well too.
My brothers and I opened for Johnny at a stage show in '59. He was very nice to us and his mgr. Tillman Franks got us on the Louisiana Hayride. He was killed about 6 months after. RIP Johnny, great music...
This song takes me back to when I was ten, listening to Johnny Horton for hours with my daddy. I miss him so much. Melanoma is cruel. RIP Daddy, 12/23/60-7/10/10
@themanfromlamancha You're kidding right? Johnny Horton wrote this song when Josh Turner was just a sparkle in his daddy's eyes... you can't compare contemporary versions to the original...
@000jpg000 just because johnny hortonwrote this song it doesnt mean his version is better...after all thats like sayin the first car ever made is better than a porsche made today ;)
At age 14, I was attending Green Acres Jr. High School in Shreveport, Louisiana when Johnny Horton died. I remember well the funeral being held at a funeral home within sight...just up the street from our school. We saw John Wayne and a number of other well known country personalities drive up to pay their last respects. I truly liked and enjoyed Johnny...it's a shame he went out as he did. George Jones does a pretty good cover of "I'm a One Woman Man." Just a thought. Knightsix
@60knightsix That is so amazing that you saw that happen. I love Johnny and I love John Wayne and George Jones, you were so blessed to be able to see them
Their was a lady on Art bell radio show . she talked about a affair of sorts with johnny . and she said they were speritually conected over a period of years and they set up the time and space they they would meet at. and went on with other drama that seemed far fetched yet could be so....
My daddy and I absolutely LOVE this song - and all of his songs! OMG, and I'm 16!! I can't believe I love this song! :) It should be listened to for years to come - he truly is a legend.
My sister had an old album of various singers and this song was on it. When she got divorced her "Ex" took it on the sly and I haven't been able to remember what the name of that album was, but this was one of the songs on it and I just loved it --- even at age 12 :o) I am now almost 48 and I have never been able to locate that album. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe one of you might have it ! Wouldn't that be cool !?!?! ;o) Was going to try and look for it on eBay........

This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@hotlinklarry "Jews" own all American record companies. They promote redneck music because rednecks are American's lowest common denominator (low comms). They love war and violence; they believe you're not a man if you're not violent. Therefore, the America's "jewish" government knows they can always count on rednecks to support their "Jewish" Wars For Oil.
@HDEANBERRYDOTCOM i know many jews who listen to country and why sould race have any thing to do with it i know many blacks natives and people of other racis to
Awesome song. That has been stuck in my head. Got the Country Craving after pulling out my Album collection yesterday. Thanks for posting This Great Song!
@jedirock Don't "ragg" on others? You idiot, what about "josh turner is a shitstain"? Your fat genetic mistake of a mom is a shitstain, making you a son of a shitstain
George Jones sings this same song and although Johnny Horton is a great singer and all but I personaly like the George Jones version better because its quicker beat.
In response to your comment, I agree totally about the total crap that is called "country" now. It is pitiful! Watching this and then watching Dwight Yoakum do the same tune is sad.!!!
Guidoman, I agree country today is pretty pathetic. You're picking out one of the few good ones today though when you slag Dwight Yoakam. He's a 50s honky tonk star playing today.
Dwight is da man!!
P.S. Are you sure Dwight does a version of this song? I've never come across it.
I know--I thought about it and Dwight is definitely one of the better ones although he' s not had a hit in a while--I don't think. Seems that Nashville crowd just dumps you when you get too old. Rock and roll does the same thing to their aging stars with a couple of exceptions. But, he does know and respect the history of the genre. He's not a half-bad actor , either. Seen "Slingblade"? Really good movie. And yes he does it--I think it's on youtube. Johnny Cash might do it , too.
He did play there a couple of times and they did want him to join, but Johnny wanted to stay with the Hayride in Shreveport. Probably not the best career decision, but a cool move. I'd have much rather gone to a Hayride show over an Opry show any day. Him staying with the Hayride might be a reason he's never been inducted into the Hall Of Fame. Nashville likes to hold grudges.
This will alwasy be one of my favorite songs. Josh Turner did a cover of this song on I think the album before this new one. It's not bad, but it's very hard to sing along if you're female. lol
I listened to this song as a child, and I am only 21. Johnny Horton was just one of those singers that my parents listened to and wanted their children listen to. They agree with you and so do I. The term of country has really changed recently. And I would really like it to go back some. Like to the Don't take the Girl era.
