I remember this beautiful hymn being sung by Bing Crosby in the B/W movie "The Bells of St. Mary's". Bing Crosby played the role of a Catholic priest and the school was attached to the church. The nuns who rans the school were not always pleased with the new priest's ideas! When Bing gave the kids a "Holiday"(with little justification), the nuns were surprised and understandably upset. Usually on TV at Christmas time along with "It's a Wonderful World" and "A Christmas Carol"(Scrooge).
This is also VERY similar to the civil rights song "We Shall Overcome" which is a descendant of the spiritual song "No More Auction Block." The first 2 lines are almost identical. Dylan's song "Blowin' in the Wind is also said to have come from "No More Auction Block."
Its the German Christmas Carol "O du froehliche, o du selige, gnadenbringende Weihnachtszeit!"...Very famous in Germany, but no one here knows that it is originally an Latin hym of the blessed virgin Mary...everyone thinks, its an old German folk song...
The Church lost its traditional roots when the leftist element of Vatican II forced this inane and dumbed down version of what it calls a Mass. The one true Mass is indeed the Tridentine, not the "clap your hands' and "stamp your feet" so called Mass which was forced upon the faithful. There is no reverence for the blessed sacrament and beautiful churches have been mutilated in the name of modernization. Unless changes come soon, evangelical protestants will continue to gain ground.
@hoomanbein I too prefer the Tridentine Mass, with the priest ACTING as priest and intercessor, but I HAVE seen the new Mass said with reverence too. (The Old Mass can likewise be said in a sloppy and hurried way.) What must be restored isn't just old "forms", but a sense of the sacred. That comes from within as much as from without, and priests, brothers and nuns need to set the example as they always did. They're the people who opened my eyes to the sacred, miracles, and truths in traditions.
This is a very beautiful hymn. Thank you for posting it.
For the last two years I have been going to a latin mass that is in communion with the Church. I love the latin mass but also see the wisdom of what Vatican 2 was trying to bring about. There are things I miss from the Paul VI mass (novus ordo). There is a great book that I would recommend: The Pope, the Council and the Mass. This book helps traditionalist (like me) to gain better perspective.
Carm4765, I will pray for you. Please allow Christ to enter your heart and remove the cynacism and bitterness. Nothing done with mankind is perfect, but perfect worship of God is possible through the intervention of the Holy Spirit. Don't go to church for the priest or for the other people there but for you and your soul.
I played this at a protestant church concert on the oboe once; not even knowing it is a catholic hymn; I`m not even sure if the Priest knew it or crossed their mind. At any case, I like this classic, solemn, song. Yet I don`t understand why people here are upset about the old mass versus the new mass and the catholic church. This can be sung or played at either one and it is being done in churches.
It`s a masterpiece anywhere it`s played. Thanks for sharing it.
You're simply naive to the issue of the Tridentine Mass and the Novus Ordo Mass, as developed from the Second vatican Council. The hymn is beautiful and solemn, regardless. The Novus Ordo mass is an indult mass, bastardized by the Council and forced upon Catholics in the 70s, 80s and 90s, even though Rome NEVER forbade the saying/singing of a Latin Mass. It is the TRUE, ONLY way to worship the One, True God.
@Tijguy In Germany, it's sung with these lyrics in Catholic churches, and also in Catholic and Protestant churches as a Christmas carol with German lyrics: "O Du Froliche". The best German version on You Tube is by Marshall and Alexander.

Beautiful music beautiful pictures. The Pieta is amazing but as far as the Church goes, that's where the beauty ends. I was raised Catholic and was an altar boy and trust me it's just Big Business like Walmart or GM or any other. It's a crock of junk. Dig down deep and give us 10% of your income( to pay for the the churches sins).
Great pomp though, great hymns and the funerals were always our favorites because the incense was so cool and we actually got an envelope from the mortician-:)
I wanted to be a 3rd order Dominican. The group near me is Pius X. How can I join a church in rebellion? How would that help me? Our God is a god of union, not division. I would reccomend. 1 Stop going to the Pius X mass. It is a mass of rebellion. 2 Petition the local catholic pastor for a latin mass. I am sure more people than you would like it. 3 Petition the bishop to have one started near you. Maybe it won't be in the parish nearest you, but the next. May Christ and His peace be with you.
The Pius X people are not in union with Rome. While the latin mass is beautiful how can something that is in rebellion with the succesor of Peter be where you want to be? They have set themselves up as holier than the pope, more catholic than the pope. What is more catholic than obedience and fidelity to the church?
True, the Novus Ordo has problems. But it is a valid mass given us by the Holy Mother Church. I would petition the local bishop for a latin mass.
@dancny They won`t listen. That´s why we had to go to the catacombs. The novus ordo has the sexual abuse over and over. Something is not right. We need to restore the Holy Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI is fighting hard. God bless him!
@ixtoc999 Connecting the Novus Ordo to sexual abuse is just plain silly. My brother was abused by a priest when we still had the Latin Mass, and he was adopted: we found out years later that his biological father WAS a priest! Bring traditions and a sense of the sacred back, yes! But don't equate them with a perfection that never existed. The Church has problems now and it had them back "then". Somehow, it survives despite US. A sure sign of God's grace and favor.
@lichtbroeder 12, 000 abuses by novusordo priests. "0" sexual abuses by FSSPX priests. That tell us that the novus ordo stablishment is rotten to the core. Sad, but true. God have mercy or those depraved priests souls.
@ixtoc999 Honestly, there has been a history of clergy scandal in the Catholic Church long before the Novus Ordo, which was hushed up. My adopted brother was molested by a priest in 1961. His birth father WAS a priest. Most priests have been good, but bad ones have existed since day one. Look up: A VERY SHORT HISTORY OF CLERGY SEXUAL ABUSE IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH by
Rev. Thomas Doyle. Several Church councils dealt with priests having ALL kinds of sexual activity. Your perfect world never existed.
@lichtbroeder HONESTLY, IN THE SSPX , there was not ONE SINGLE CASE OF RAPE OR ABUSE, thanks be to God. The novus ordo establishment are yuppies trying to have fun. Totally rotten, BEWARE OF THEM!!!
@ixtoc999 And your point is what? I said that BEFORE changes in the Mass, there were still cases of clergy sexual abuse. This has been going on for centuries: periodic "low" points in Church history, which were addressed by the appearance of saints and reformers. That the SSPX has no reported cases of abuse now (or any in fact) is wonderful, but that has no bearing on my point. You cannot blame Vatican I and II for the mess we're in. We've been in it BEFORE, even when the Mass was in Latin.
@ixtoc999 And when the first reported case of abuse surfaces in the SSPX (whose members are surely human), will your world come tumbling down? You seem to have more faith in the goodness of the SSPX than in God being with His Church when it falters. I applaud more widespread use of the Latin Mass and old traditions, but I am not a "Traditionalist" in your rigid sense. God gave us traditions and He also gave us brains and hearts. Calling all Novus Ordo priests "rotten" belies that fact.
I hope that when the old church is restored, the old bigotry and hatred will not be. Not accepting homosexuality is one thing. Uncharitable name calling is quite another.
Beautiful,it brings me back to a better time when the Church was the Church, not a watered down version like it is now. Not saying that Vatican II was wrong, it just went too far to appease the few. I fear that we have lost something that we may have lost forever. I pray that the Holy Father Benedict can and will bring us back to the way it was and should ever be.
@icesbro3 I agree with you, but not only the Pope has to work, all the mystical body of the Holy Church has to work for the restoration. One challenge more in the long history of our beloved Church. Pax et Bonum.
Religious traditions are not things that we give to God. They are things that God gives to us. They connect us to our parents and ancestors, and give us a sense of continuity as we look to the past AND to the future. Traditions embody memory. They also embody hope.
The V2 changed nothing it was a confirmation of our faith,. It was the sick people in the church who went beyond what the church wanted.. We have it here a dyke for song leader. And we sing the old hymns week after week all protestant. And i have nothing agaist protestants i was one before i converted. But enough is enough... I want my church back.... Or i will become orthodox they havent given a thing up.. Why did we????????????????
Dear sister: I am a traditional Catholic, had to go to a St. Pius X parrish to have the Latin Mass, which is as Catholic as you can go. It is quite a difference. How can I tell my Protestant friends to convert to the Novus Ordo? It is real hard. But we have Jesus promise, and we have to keep struggling for the true Mass. And that struggle gives me hope. Pax et Bonum.
"damaging times of the 60's " whats that all about? I love this type of music but the 60s had much more of an impact than this. It had an effect much more profound than this. Trust me if someone wanted to get high they could listen to this and get twisted up just as badly.
I think he means that the 60s was the period in the Catholic church when a notorius gang of deranged modernists called Vatican II tried to discard every tradition and beautiful thing in Catholic worship substituting banal discordant trash in liturgy, music, art and architecture for the true Catholicism beloved of generations of the faithful!
Thank goodness people are at last coming to their senses
This is what we mean by Catholic culture and it is holy and beautiful!
