Hi Ed, I'm interested in the Genz Benz Streamliner. But what cab is a good match for the Streamliner ? I like the feel of the 12'' inches speakers. I crave for a 4x12 cab. At what cabs can I look for? Thank you!!
Fantastic video Ed! I want one of these desperately. I played in shop yesterday and my god. Great for headroom, great tones, and I love the gain boost for some fuzz. I found your review really helpful before going in there. You got me gassing for this one! Very nice piece of equipment.
I finally played through one of these beauties. My setup included a Mesa Boogie Powerhouse 4/12 cab and a Squier 5 string 70's jazz bass.Needless to say I fell in love. It's one thing to hear it on Youtube, but it's definitely an eargasmic experience in person.I'm definitley saving up for this amazing piece of equipment!
Great stuff as usual Ed! I'm gassing bad for one of these! I'm currently playing a GK 700RB II (480W) through GK NEO 412, and I'm pushing the amp a bit too much and distorting the low notes. I think Streamliner 900 would be a perfect match for a transparent, Hi Fi-ish cab like GK NEO 412 to warm it up a bit. What do you think? Does Streamliner sound better with transparent cabs? Also, I see Streamliner is not on the list of your gear on your site. How come?
I just Bought That set and Its sweet!!! I Strongly recommend this to anyone who is into Jazz and Latin is Just Wow!! The Growl on the Gain helps it sustain with the tubes brings out harmonics and the gain with the Slap settings Is Really the Tube amp you looking into..(UB Cabs 2x10- with 1x12 all one Cab) (1x15 cab) and still all together it can handle the Power Just boost bass for Earthquake it can do it!!
Very, very, very nice video!!! Very usefull and accurate!
What I've read on internet about this amp is a huge lack of mid-frequencies, even if the mid control is totally in "boost" position. I'm going to recieve GB Streamliner 900 right this morning for my personal test, I don't hear this lack in this video, anyway...
Why they say this things? Is that (in part or not) true?
Does this system sound good at low volumes? Or would I do better with a smaller 6.0 system? Most of the rooms I play are small and require low volume. But we occasionally play a big loud room or an outdoor show. So I don't want to skimp but I don't want something that can't play quietly, either.
@jtroska - Sure it sounds good at low volume, just quieter. ;) For loud outdoor shows, I always use a 900 watt amp, either the Streamliner or Shuttle Max 9.2. The 600 watt Shuttle gets pushed a little hard for big loud outdoor gigs.
Hi ED...Im from Brazil, an liked so much your videos...EXCELLENT EXPLAIN, SO COMPLETE. Im goin to USA next month, and will buy a new bass amplifier head ( already have my old CARVIN 600 WATTS) with digital power amp.
2 choices GENZ BENZ STLR 900 OU MARKBASS TUBE 800???
To me...those 3x12ax7 can be changed (upgraded) for JJ or even some telefunken...what do you think ( SORRY ABOUT MY BAD ENGLISH)
@marcosazzella - Well, my personal preference has always been Genz Benz, but I haven't played that particular Markbass amp, so I can't compare them. I don't see any reason to change the tubes until they need replacing. Genz uses Ruby Tubes, they're fine. Just my opinion.
Thanks! Also would u say the sterling ray 34 (or sb 14), the lakland 5501/ 4401,or the ibanez sr500 would be a most versatile bass? I play all types of music from rock, to funk to jazz, and am looking for a versatile active instrument that's made well and has great tone. Again any help at all or other suggestions would be great:) thanks
Hey ed do you have any opinions on the ibanez Sr 500? i have a squire vintage modified jazz bass and am looking to upgrade to an active instrument. I played both the Sr 500 and Sr 505 and loved them both, but am trying to consider all options before i spend my money. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! thanks, o great reviews btw!
@arcmccun - I don't think I've played that exact bass, but I'm very familiar with Ibanez in general. They make good basses in all price points. The necks are slim and fast, but I tend to prefer a little more meat myself... but that's personal taste. I like the mahogany body Ibanez basses, to my ear, they are the best sounding ones they make. You might also check the Lakland 44-01 and 55-01. Maybe a little more more, but it's more Fender-ish.
Hey there Ed, just wondering if you could help me out, i'm looking for a combo amp around 200watt for around $600, wanted to see if you could point me in a good direction
@KIRKMAN91 - I don't know... I don't look at 200 watt amps much. Maybe Ashdown or GK? I'm a Genz Shuttle fan myself, but they are more than $600. TC makes a nice 500 watt combo that costs around $600.
Man....I don't know if I'll ever stop playing my SVT-IIpro at ground-level shows....but this is looking/sounding pretty sweet for those punk rock shows that are down a flight of stairs! Do you find this amp to be as touch sensitive as an all-tube setup, or is it more of an on/off type thing in regards to the tube OD?
Very well done test, with comparable samples and the musician playin the same passage over and over to help us understand the differences. I wish all tests around youtube were done like this. Kudos!
Love your stellar musicianship and humility Ed, rare combination!!! Is the only difference between the Streamliner 900 and 600 a little power difference and the colour? Your demos and your books are muchly appreciated! Cheers
@FunkyRegan - Well, your sources are not well informed. First of all, there are great Class D amps, and not so great Class D amps, and great Class A amps, and not so great class A amps. The main advantage of Class D design is lighter weight for the wattage. This amp (Streamliner) is 900 watts and 6.5lbs. Not possible with class A design. If you carry your gear around a lot like most gigging players, that counts for a lot. And, this particular amp freakin' rocks! Did you listen to the demo?
Thanks for another great presentation. I was considering an Ampeg STV-7PRO, but now I'm going to have to test drive a Streamliner 900. I hope the sponsors are reading this, Ed has once again had an effect on my buying decision
@shawnhabibi - Yes, that is the Uber 212. I have also used the NeoX212t with this head and it sounded awesome. Any cab Genz Benz makes is great, but I have a preference for 212s.
II use the Bartolini NTBT-918 2-band Preamp into a modded Neve 1073 then in to a custom build power amp similar to the Agiular DB 751 power stage but with twice the power (about 1900 Mosfet ss watt stereo in to 6 Aguilar DB 112 cabs that cover it pretty good i think!
I swear that if you just find the right combination Bass preamp power amp and speakers then you are home " took me 20 years to get home ".
Yeah i play guitar too then i use a old Plexi 1987
@pleximanic - Well, sounds cool, but probably not practical to gig with. There are lots of ways to get a great bass sound, and what you consider great, maybe someone else won't. The Streamliner has it's own personality, and even if it uses "too many pots"... there is great practical value to having something small, light, loud, and versatile that always works and doesn't break easily. I personally don't want to haul around 6 cabs, even if they are little DB112s. But hey, enjoy your rig.
@fetterpenner1 - The Terror bass is a cool amp, I should be getting one in soon to review for Guitar World. They have a decidedly more aggressive sound than the Streamliner. Comparison? Well, when I get done with it, you can judge for yourself.
I just bought a GB ShuttleMax 6.0. Now I'm Jonsing for the Streamliner 900, thanks a lot. Is there much of a difference, other than features between the 2 heads? I like the simplicity of the 900 but I hate to take the trade in loss of upgrading again unless its a significant improvement. Think its worth it?
I never see any negative reviews by you. Ever post any?
@sanwin17 - I am not really a reviewer, I do demos. My job is to present the gear as it is intended to sound. If it's crap, I won't film it, you can't hide crap. The SHuttle 6.0 and Streamliner 900 are very different amps tone-wise. That was what I was attempting to show you. Should you get it? Only if you think it's the sound you want. I don't tell people what to buy.
@BassGuitarMag Actually, you pretty much are a reviewer. Demos mean you just play, and then say "go to the website to learn more". Reviewers actually talk about the product.
Another awesome vid Ed- thanx!! Glad coz - Gee after all the hype on TB about this amp. I like the Overdrive on the Shuttle 6 & 9 more than this BUZZY sound. I hope this amp does sound as good as everyone says. Perhaps after all the hype's died down & the honeymoon period's over, I'll try one.
@rodl2005 FWIW I had little trouble getting my old Shuttle 6.0 to sound pretty similar to this. I think that particular tone is meant to be a pretty strong OD, and I'd bet that it wouldn't be any trouble to dial it down.
@rodl2005 He has the "gain boost" engaged during the particularly OD tones, so my guess is that it would be pretty easy to dial back into more of a "grit". Also, I didn't have much trouble getting a similar sound out of my old Shuttle 6.0 with the gain dimed.
Hi, Ed. The song you play at 9:08, with your Precision Bass, what song is that? Is it an actual song, or is it just a pre-programmed accompaniment for practicing purposes? I'm asking you that because I just loved it, I like this kind of music a lot, sort of a bubblegum pop, if I may say so.
Thank you very much for this review, keep it up. I'm always checking for new videos from your channel.
@SpaceVulcan - I have played through some of the smaller combos. I'll just say it's not the sound I'm personally looking for. But they make a lot of different products, so it's possible there is something they make that I would go for.
@a7xBassNC - I can't say I listen to those guys much, but I really dig Tim C's sound and feel. Audioslave had some cool tunes too. I like all kinds of music, and rock is a big part of my musical makeup. It's a blast to play loud, and I've been doing more of it lately! This amp came just at the right time for me!
@BassGuitarMag yeah timmy c has an amazing tone for sure. Coincidentaly enough, the amp sounds like it could pull of the sound of the 'bass solo' in the second half of the song....
i just love that tone with the pbass w/flats and foam mute at the end. I could listen to that all day. Great review i really wanna try one of these out.
Ed, I know its out of context but what do you think about Spector Euro models? Hope you can help. I currently have a Warwick Bolt-on and im very happy but i fell in love with the "spector image" as well as the sound. Thanks and you are a lucky guy to play all those basses in this video ñ_ñ good luck!
@yosoysahidleon - Go to bassemporium (dot) com and look under resources, then newsletters and scroll down. I did a long written review of the Spector Euro LX4 with sound samples. Nice basses.
I've got two Warwick Streamer LX SEs in right now. Nice basses, and oddly similar looking to the Spector.

BassGuitarMag 2 months ago
@BassGuitarMag Thanks! Would you describe the GB 212T-UB or NEOX 212-T as Hi-Fi sounding and transparent?
mouthmw 2 months ago
@mouthmw - The UB is a little more transparent than the NEO. The NEO is a little darker sounding, it has a smaller, less present tweeter than the UB.

Cheers from Porto Alegre, Brazil.

@igorgoiaba - it's called "You Can't Hurry Love" by the Supremes. James Jamerson was the original bassist.

I was wondering if you ever laid hands on any Mark Bass Amp. And if you did, how would its pro's, con's and general qualities are... Thx!
SpaceVulcan 1 year ago
@SpaceVulcan - I have played through some of the smaller combos. I'll just say it's not the sound I'm personally looking for. But they make a lot of different products, so it's possible there is something they make that I would go for.

@a7xBassNC - I can't say I listen to those guys much, but I really dig Tim C's sound and feel. Audioslave had some cool tunes too. I like all kinds of music, and rock is a big part of my musical makeup. It's a blast to play loud, and I've been doing more of it lately! This amp came just at the right time for me!
BassGuitarMag 1 year ago 10
@BassGuitarMag yeah timmy c has an amazing tone for sure. Coincidentaly enough, the amp sounds like it could pull of the sound of the 'bass solo' in the second half of the song....

Hi bro what's the song name? please tell me
XaviOrtega1 7 months ago
i just love that tone with the pbass w/flats and foam mute at the end. I could listen to that all day. Great review i really wanna try one of these out.
Bobbyki46 1 year ago
@Bobbyki46 - Yeah, this amp really gets the B15 vibe.
BassGuitarMag 1 year ago
@Bobbyki46 Same with me. I was blissfully enjoying that little tune and was instantly disappointed when the playing stopped!

Ed, I know its out of context but what do you think about Spector Euro models? Hope you can help. I currently have a Warwick Bolt-on and im very happy but i fell in love with the "spector image" as well as the sound. Thanks and you are a lucky guy to play all those basses in this video ñ_ñ good luck!
yosoysahidleon 1 year ago
@yosoysahidleon - Go to bassemporium (dot) com and look under resources, then newsletters and scroll down. I did a long written review of the Spector Euro LX4 with sound samples. Nice basses.
I've got two Warwick Streamer LX SEs in right now. Nice basses, and oddly similar looking to the Spector.
