I know he's a classic - and please don't bollock me or anything - but in my heart of heart I've always thought of Clapton as a little average bordering on slightly crap and find it hard to understand why he makes it onto so many top 10 lists when there are guitarists that surpass him by miles, in my opinion. I guess you might want to consider adding Paco de lucia, John Mclaughlin, Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, Dimebag, Shawn Lane ( probably the best in my opinion ), Stanley Jordan, Wes Montgomery and John Petrucci as well. I'm only mentioning guitarists who have been very influential to many many guitarists. I'm probably missing out a few too but I'm just glad you mentioned David Gilmour.

Brian May doesn't suck. But he simply does not deserve to be on this list. That holds true for Slash as well. It's also true for Angus Young. None are first rate. Chuck Berry is a great pioneer. He came up with more good licks than anyone else. He was so creative But even he use to say that he wasn't a great technical player. There is no best guitar player. At the highest level it's a matter of style. My 3 favorites are Beck, Vaughn, and Clapton. These guys made the best music.

I've seen several lists putting Page at the top. Hendrix is easily my second favorite.

But I think that Page was more influential, and technically better. If you look up his tabs, you can see that Page knew alot more about music theory. Page was also much better at rhythm.

Most of all, Page, with some help practically started metal. And he reinvented the blues guitar.
