Brilliant, genius scene - at this point, we're past the paranoia part of the storyline and into full-on "aliens are real" oh-my-god-it's-an-invasion territory.

And I say it's genius because if you hadn't identified the movie's real central theme by this point, then there was really no way you were going to spot it until the 'twist ending'. And kick yourself hard. (I did)

This was wierd, certainly, but at the same time it's not some sanity-blasting horror from beyond space and time. It's just a big green man. It creeped me out when I first saw it, but looking back I can think of a few ways you could simulate something like that. Costumes, face-paint, and good bit of distance from the camera would give you pretty similar results, methinks.
