After watching the video twice, reading some of the more intelligent comments posted, running the same scenario through my simulator a few times with similar results, and considering all the options thoroughly, I have come to the conclusion that he should NEVER HAVE EJECTED. What a DUMMY! I mean HE COULDA SAVED THE PLANE!
@TEHGROUND weel, no i don't know about flying, but obviously, if he left all the controls, the plane will fly smoothly upward...as it did when he ejected from the plane.
@CODMASTA That's true the pressure tends to increase attitude. However he was only about 10 feet above the water and was still losing altitude, that's about the right time to eject.
@CODMASTA wrote, "[...] why did he eject? He could have just left the controls of the plane and let physics do its job."
1. He was ORDERED to eject.
2. The plane clearly continued losing altitude until both pilots ejected.
3. You only know the outcome AFTER THE FACT. It's not so easy when a mistake means you're DEAD and mere seconds is all the time you have to make a life or death decision.
4. Dual ejection has timing sequence, so you CAN'T wait until the very last moment to decide.
That was the last second you retard, it was a coin toss at that point if they would have made it or not. Nobody that's smart enough to fly military jets would gamble their life with 50/50 odds. They did the right thing.. Blind ass luck the A-6 managed to fly off after they punched out, maybe losing the weight of the pilots and ejection seats had something to do with that...
Alright I know it scary, but holy fuck if you look at your altemeter OR TO YOUR SIDE you can see that you still have a LOT of space before you crash, WAIT TILL THE LAST SECOND! TRUST ME IT MORE REWARDING! THAN EJECTING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! These planes are not cheap you know!
In my experience, those that wait to see what is wrong upon hearing the command "Eject, Eject, Eject!", usually wound up dead! You don't wait, you just go!
@SreamenDemon looks like he did hit the throttle, the plane was climbing. It's easy to sit here and second guess these guys' actions, they did what they had to do to live another day. Planes can be replaced, they are the cheapest part of the package.
Hey all, I was on the flight deck when that happened in May 1987, while doing carrier quals in the Gulf of Mexico. That is my old command VA-42 station out of NAS Oceana, VA. Beach VA. and if memory serves me right that was aircraft 507.
Hey all, I was on the flight deck when that happened in May 1987, while doing carrier quals in the Gulf of Mexico. That is my old command VA-42 station out of NAS Oceana, VA. Beach VA. and if memory serves me right that was aircraft 507. What happen was the aircraft caught the wire, and the tail hook “stinger” broke and once that happen the crew was just in for the ride.
for all of u saying they should have stayed in, if u miss the wire, youre most likely fucked. if u have no clue what im talking about, go punch yourself repeatedly as needed.
@Redmilitiageneral Um, no. When they miss it's called a Bolter, and it happens all the time. That's why they are at full throttle even when they are stopped, incase they need to take off and try again. Here it looks like the arresting cable might have broken...can't tell for sure. Stop making stupid comments.
Perfectly honest mistake, they saw the possibility of going into the water so they ejected, lives are more important when dealing with multi-million dollar aircraft.
No, if you were intelligent and skilled enough to become a military pilot you would have ejected. Life is greater than a jet. It's easy to say what you would have done after knowing the outcome.
@TheZepside Actually they didn't. the loss of weight, (seats and crew), and what is commonly referred to as ground effect cause the aircraft to stay airborne. They had no way of knowing as it could have just as easily stalled and hit the water killing both crewmembers. Sooner or later it will come back down as the autopilot was not engaged.
@czert2 negative, each ejection seat ways over 1000 lbs, when you punch out, the aircraft loses over 2000lbs, making the plane climb back out again. If they had not ejected they would have rode the plane into the water
@dmbinns1 i was jocing, i know that pilots NEVER eject if is here any other option. Some even died when they tried to save plane/minimize colateral damage.
@JacobTheIndoAmerican this is the original A-6 varient the plane ur talkin bout is the recantly retired EA-6B. same plane with major modifications and diffrent mission roles
I wonder if the nose picked up because of losing the weight of the crew. The comments about the LSO being the God of the flight deck are really brought into question when viewed in light of this obvious bad call to eject.
The aircraft climbed not because the crew ejected but because it takes time for the J52 engines to spool up from the idle setting just before touchdown to the max power needed when they failed to trap. @Zyworski
@iwannaplaycs A P&W J52, that is ancient, I thought the A6 was more advanced than that. I was already aware of the fact that they throttle up upon touching the deck and have seen video of them really stretching that cable a good one.
Though following orders to eject, had they stayed with the plane, they would have been able to save the taxpayers 60 million, though they would have been court marshaled.
"A-6E Intruder, BuNo 155657, of VA-142, misses trap on the USS Lexington, both crew eject as jet leaves deck, lightened airframe climbs away, even on reduced power, to crash in the Gulf of Mexico ~50 miles S of NAS Pensacola, Florida."
These erogant sons a bxxxxxx get a crap load of cash, chicks and opporunities. I say they stay on and go down with the ship if they screw up the landing.
"I´ve had it, I am a beautiful plane, a masterpiece of engineering and I don´t wanna be used anymore to kill poor people...I am gonna get rid of that fucking pilot and then I will be free to roam the skies as I wish to."
I've always wondered about situations like this, presumably the ship is moving forward into the wind, so when you eject in front of it aren't you then in immediate danger of being run over by an aircraft carrier? Surely it can't stop or turn away in time to avoid it?
@F1Master007 What if you have to eject on take off? The catapult or the engines fail or something and you go off the end of the deck and eject straight in front of the carrier?
@reluctable i think you are trained to make an turn so you get on a side of the carrier. If not they will probably drop a boat as fast as possible and rush to him, but these situations are difficult and i'm not in the navy, so don't ask me :S
oh man they would have done it easily..panicin landing officer reacts too late "abort abort power power.. and then does what he does best..yells "eject..eject.. then he is like "go on ;) pilot must have been like WTF OMG..
I wonder if the plane would have climbed with the crew still onboard. Obviously, the lightened plane suddenly went far above stall speed, but it makes me want to know if the multi-million dollar jet could've been saved.
Also, for any military (or ex) pilots out there. In civilian aviation, the PIC has sole responsibility and is the final authority for all decisions & the operation of the plane. Is it same in military or are you obliged to obey someone on the boat telling you what to do?
@CAMBOJNR1994 It had less weight, so it's take off speed was lower (albeit only slightly but obviously enough) to get up a bit, it still crashed when it stalled.
Think of this from a pilots perspective if you bolt a landing and you don't have a positive rate and your 10 kts below stall speed and you hear eject eject you don't hesitate to pull that little striped handle, plus all training on ejections tells us not to wait to long to decide to eject your life as a pilot is more important than the plane
also, dnmatsz comments on other version of this: "VA-42, A-6 training squadron, was doing pilot quals. Pilot and B/N were both doing their first arrested landings in an A-6.The hook broke & plane was 10 kts below stall speed going over the edge>LSO called for 'eject', and they did. A/C was at full power, trimmed for take off, and about 800 lbs lighter with no crew or seats. Did perfect hammerhead stall about 3K' up, missed Lex by about 1/2 mile. I was in trailing A-6 in pattern. Crew was OK"
@stopthatimmediately Do you think that your explanation is going to help anyone? You got to dumb it down for the folks who don't have a clue about military jets or carrier life.
@sidesjeremy ok. translated: the pilot and his bombardier/navigator were both trainees and this was their first time landing on a carrier. the hook that catches the wire broke, but it slowed them down enough so that they probably weren't going fast enough to take off again. the landing signal officer (the voice giving landing advice to the pilot) told them to eject when they rolled off the edge, and they did. both survived. plane crashed nearby.
12th May 1987 - A‑6E Intruder no. 155657AD - VA‑42, USS Lexington - Crashed into Gulf of Mexico 50 M S of NAS Pensacola, FL, USA - LTJG R. Rabuse & ENS A. Hux ejected. google ejection history.

You got to dumb it down for the folks who don't have a clue about military jets or carrier life.
sidesjeremy 5 months ago
@sidesjeremy ok. translated: the pilot and his bombardier/navigator were both trainees and this was their first time landing on a carrier. the hook that catches the wire broke, but it slowed them down enough so that they probably weren't going fast enough to take off again. the landing signal officer (the voice giving landing advice to the pilot) told them to eject when they rolled off the edge, and they did. both survived. plane crashed nearby.
