Was disappointed with the interviewer who got rather stuck on the Prisoner's dilemma and as a result failed to really get the point the speaker was making. Unfortunate.
Lots of bluster but no substance. I like the idea of 'gut instinct' but it would be nice for an example that actually utilized it, rather than a simple CBA in Sao Paolo. And his decision grids were all backwards. Since when is 'cooperation' cooperation with the authorities? and how can one 'defect' to one's partner in crime? the opposite is the case in all the examples I've ever seen, cooperation is with one's partner, and defection is to the enemy, i.e. the police. Consultants aren't academics!
@Budzilla24 The prisoner's dilemma is about the conflict between self interest and loyalty. It is not about whether or not you are friends or enemies. The two extremes outcomes; neither cracks and you both walk away or both of you crack and receive the worst punishment possible are tempered by the fact that he who cracks first will be punished less.
@Budzilla24 The charts are not flipped around, they refer to wether the moderates defect to the radical wing of the opposition, or the reformers defect to the authoritarian wing of the government...see Przeworski 1991 Democracy and the Market (Cambridge), Cohen 1994 Radicals, Reformers and Reactionaries (Chicago)...the whole idea is whether the 'middle' can hang together, either if one is interested in the survival of democracy or the breakdown of authoritarian rule.
