They have a mormon church in Atlanta, Georgia and the majority of them are blacks....Please people, if you truly want to know something...go to the source. Mormons were strongly abolitionists - that's one of the primary reasons they were killed and chased out of Missouri (the only time in history that an extermination order has been issued was against the mormons - it was legal to kill mormons). Also, in response to blacks' eligibility to hold the priesthood and be part of the church - there were no issues in the early days.

In fact, many early blacks were ordained with Melchisedech priesthood - the highest priesthood - and one black member was even ordained into the quorum of the 70 under the hands of Joseph Smith. Withholding priesthood from blacks was never a doctrinal issue, it was a policy that was never even heard of until Brigham Young proposed it before a hostile Congress when applying for Deseret (Utah) statehood.

Mormons were ALWAYS opposed to slavery! The fact that for a time it did not confer the priesthood on the African race should not be confused with support of slavery. In fact Joseph Smith said that members of the African race were children of God and heirs of salvation. Joseph was always opposed to slavery and the Mormons suffered intense persecution in Missouri largely over that issue. Mr. O'Donnell should get his facts straight. The Mormons are not bigots. Mr. O'Donnell is the bigot.

Long ago, Mormonism may have condoned enslaving blacks. However, long ago and today, atheistic socialism- a religion comically devoid of self-recognition-promotes slavery not just for blacks but for all people (excepting the elites, of course, which include media reprobates like the hateful, bigoted punk Lawrence O'Donnell). Actually the Mormons much resented the proposed expansion of slavery to the west. Mormons were very uncomfortable with both Democrats and Republicans. They were uncomfortable with the socialist and racist tendencies of the Democrats, while they feared Republicans for their opposition to polygamy. Much of this uncertaintly and struggle for survival in the 1800's is likely what had the Priesthood Ban come into place and the openess to slavery in the Utah territory. Mormons have disavowed this.
