what is this guy talking about. GPUs are great for rendering. They do very quick floating point operations which you need to do quick matrix translations, ray traces, vertex calculation. They are perfect for all those 3d cgi objects they are adding to the scenes.
I'm working on a Star Trek-fanfic project of my own and since I'm a fan of classic model and lighting effects I'm going to at least try and do one long cool brooding shot of a spaceship soaring across the screen. :) As for the CGI/Composition/cutting I like OSS software. For some reason all of the tools I've played around with have been easier to learn. Mostly because they lack a lot features. Also: I'm certain that any other sfx corp couldn't get this done for less than $70 mil.
@BrDead1 It's a progress report, not a trailer. And those "sponsors" are ordinary folk who have contributed money to help defray the costs of the production. Silly to talk of them as if they are Coca-Cola or any other corporate, they are just people who've put in their cash. How much have you donated?
Is there any way that supporters with their home computers could join the cloud of rendering with their home PC:s to speed-up the rendering process :p ?
Mmmm... progress bars... look at those sweet progress bars. Sounds like a bad nerdy pick up line doesn it tho. "Hey baby, wanna see my progress bar?" :D Yeah sorry, I've been drinking a bit but anyway this looks great guys. Keep up the good work.
@energiaproductions Hilarious! Did you really blown up the Babylon 5 guys? Well, to be honest, that wasn't really in the sense of Gene Roddenberry but nevermind. Your new project seems to incorporate the the good things of your last movie with a better and worthier villain: Nazis! :)
@0dWHOHWb0 it's not so much that they couldn't. There are solutions for most programs. But they do not create results that would be predictable enough for a job like this.
@energiaproductions Next episode of the actual Star Wreck saga with Blender and rendered (at least partly) by our volunteers? No more 40C rooms at the office. :)
@RenderfarmFi you know, my practical joke failed. I put up one of your Blender posters from Assembly next to our rapid LW guys. They just went "meh" and one of them started telling me how good some dynamics are in blender...
@llox Personally I don't know what he's talking about, but there certainly is a "randomizer" of sorts in rendering engines like Cycles. It's a necessary function for that type of rendering.
@dsavix4 You know that I didn't meant that :) I know how to program gpu's (that was a part of my diploma thesis) and I don't see how the results could be more unpredictable than on a cpu. Okay, I see a way: the programmer's produced crappy code ;)
@dsavix4 Yes, I'm aware of this distinction. I mistakenly used the wrong word.
My excuse: I'm currently spiking a 38 degree (celsius) fever. =(
You know what I meant though.
For anyone interested, Blender is a great open source 3D-modelling and animating suite (also does rendering, compositing and video editing and has its own game engine) -- it's a bit different from other software that you may have used before but the controls are very intuitive once you learn them.

will you get intels new cpu the intel xeon 7560 chip it has the power of 16 cores and the chip is $3,820 it would be the best choice for rendering

@mymovienerd Lot of computers working all the time in one room makes it very hot.
tweeber69 5 months ago
@tweeber69 Maybe they should have us all donate so they can get some central air in there. Computers don't work well in the intense heat.
mymovienerd 5 months ago
@mymovienerd good idea. They should setup a central air fund.
The A/C at my work in the server room has hurricane force winds. It's fun to stand in front of it. These guys are missing out!

That's odd, you'd think that high-end products like the ones you listed would be able to use GPU to render.
In the upcoming Cycles update for the freeware 3D software Blender, it will be able to render using the GPU as well (and it's really cool =P).
