Obama does know his econ. The question was referring to an economic effect called the "Laffer curve" which suggests that if tax rates are lowered, enough extra economic activity leads to higher overall tax revenue. It turns out it didn't work (in the 80's), and Obama was correctly pointing out that the data that the question was based on was due to economic cycles, and not necessarily due to the tax cut. In other words he was pointing out correlation does not equal causation.

Reagan cut taxes, government revenue decreased, and the US deficit increased. The only time that the US ran a surplus in the past 40 years was when Clinton was president and the economy was booming. That doesn't mean that surplus was due to Clinton, as government revenue was up when the economy was growing. Much like today, it's not fair to blame Bush or Obama for the current deficit or high unemployment when the biggest cause are economic cycles.

Obama does know his econ. The question was referring to an economic effect called the "Laffer curve" which suggests that if tax rates are lowered, enough extra economic activity leads to higher overall tax revenue. It turns out it didn't work (in the 80's), and Obama was correctly pointing out that the data that the question was based on was due to economic cycles, and not necessarily due to the tax cut. In other words he was pointing out correlation does not equal causation.

That doesn't mean that surplus was due to Clinton, as government revenue was up when the economy was growing. Much like today, it's not fair to blame Bush or Obama for the current deficit or high unemployment when the biggest cause are economic cycles.

This process of moving businesses overseas cost the US $60 billion each year in taxes. Companies from one state going to another for tax benefits and stuff, steals away from the tax base of that state.. I thank George Bush for passing TARP monies so our banks could continue to serve. And, I thank Obama for passing/spending Stimulus monies so our industries (GM/Chrysler) could continue on and minimize the potential depression created by Wall Street and other republican entities. And, we've still got a way to go.

Help me with this ... the republicans refused to back this bill which would directly effect thousands of teacher, police and fire workers. They said there was no money.
Then, the republicans supported and voted for a democratic sponsored bill to put more drones and border patrol agents on the Arizona border. apparently, they found money!
