@metallica708 As bad as Mao was, and despite the massive death tolls that resulted from his regime, Mao seemed to actually be trying to help his people and his nation, despite employing incredibly sick means to do it, whereas, to say a few of the people mentioned here: Stalin, Attila the Hun and Leopold II were power-hungry, Hitler, Pol Pot and Idi Amin were psychotic, Khomeini was religiously zealous, and Robespierre and Vlad Tepes were freedom fighters who became corrupted and radicalized.

Still, I hope you see where I'm coming from; the death, torture, disgrace and humiliation of the Cultural Revolution was an unintended effect of an internal power struggle with the Communist Party that Mao sought to end. Oh, and as for Mussolini...definitely a dictator, but not a terrible one. Mussolini pales in comparison to Hitler. Perhaps his biggest atrocity was the annexation of Ethiopia.

Robespierre killed thousands of INNOCENT citizens and YES he did condemn entire families AND CHILDREN to death, this is a widely known fact. A "little" crazy? That's an understatement. He persecuted those with different political views... that's communism/fascism/evil however you label it, there's no excuse for that.

Drogheda was subject to the same treatment any other town in Europe could expect, if it refused the chance to surrender, under the rules of war. The killing was mainly of the garrison (half of whom were English Royalists).
Think of the behaviour of the troops at Badajoz (many of them Irish) in 1812 - AFTER the Age of Enlightenment.
