Being fairly well versed in physics and theoretical physics, I find it very unlikely string theory is correct. It may have some aspects of a correct theory, but the fact that it proposes "branes" seems rather random and unwarranted to me when everything we can observe is a particle. As far as religion, it's dying already, and I doubt it'll be around much longer. I'd wager to say more than 50% of Americans are Atheists and that number is growing rapidly.

Religion is a mortal thing for mortals. It won't change much, at all, or very slowly because of science. The reson being is the pratical application of religion is pleasure, and enjoying one's imagination. I don't think proving string theory will change the underlying motive of all life which is the persuit of happiness. some of us enjoy science. Thinking that we can bring the scientific method to understanding God is a fundamental error. If there is a creator of matter, than he is not comprised of matter. Therefore, you can't 'prove' God with the 5 senses and tools made of matter.

So the only way for a human to understand God is if they discover the way God has revealed himself. In fact, Christianity teaches God has reveals himself to the humble and hides himself from the wise and proud.

if you want to subscribe to a religion that isn't based on evidence, that's fine with me. I choose not to do so because there are lots of religions which aren't based on evidence, and it's impossible to tell which one of them is true, if any.

Good topic, discovering how the mechanics of matter and life work does not provide answers for why life exists. Without answering the question of lifes purpose, science cannot substantially address the questions that religion addresses. In fact, scientists themselves select one of two general religions, theism or atheism, or simply admit they don't know.

The general aim of religion is to explain why God did "it", create life, and how life should respond. It is less concerned with the mechanics of how God did it, which science addresses. The point is, that matter is not conscious, it doesn't care about being a molecule, a cell, an organ, or a living system. There's no reason for matter to randomly form complex structures and become conscious. As I put it, "If ever nothing was, then all would be content to nothing ever be"

So we have two equally impossible to comprehend scenarios: Either matter formed itself into ever increasingly complex structures that created conscious life for the uber-structure. Or a creator without origin designed it. Neither seems possible, and yet here we are.. If the first scenario is true, then only we can discover it. If the second is true, it is not discoverable by looking at matter and depends on revelation by the creator in the time and manner he chooses.

and once again, if you think the laws of thermodynamics are incompatible with life or abiogenesis, you don't understand the laws of thermodynamics. i suggest you read up on the laws of thermodynamics on a peer reviewed physics journal, or talk to a local physics professor about them. even the wikipedia article on this subject is adequate.

I think religion will eventually die out. Science is what we should pay more attention to. Science is logical, religion is not easy to believe - they are many different ones out there, its hard to beleive which one to follow. I believe in there being something more powerful and intelligent, maybe even spiritual.

When time goes on, intelligence grows, and so will science, and we will all be left wondering what to believe, because of scientifical theories.

If science does end up proving what happened in the beginning of our universe, then I do think some parts of religion will be marginalized, but not abandoned.

I personally believe in a higher power being the "very beginning" of existence and I don't really see how science will disprove it anytime soon.

If science were to prove the beginning of our universe and be able to predict the actions of anything in our universe, some people may, like me, believe all that and still believe in a god.
