@Avoryne Bro, if it wasn't for Pink Floyd, I can guarantee you Meshuggah would not be around. Fredrik has cited progressive rock bands like Floyd as a major influence towards his writing style. Also, I fail to see what the hell is wrong with Tool.

He may like those bands, but that doesn't mean they're responsible for his taste, that's mostly just natural.

And as for Tool. They do nothing interesting. "ZOMG, THEY HAVE DIFFERENT TIME SIGNATUREZ, AND ,AND LIKE....D MINOR KEYS FOR JUST ABOUT EVERY GOD DAMN SONG......AND THEY ALSO ARE LIKE...INTERESTED IN LIKE....EASTERN SHIT. So out there.

@davethehostage What I mean is that I know he can do better, but in every video of him playing drums, he does nothing interesting. Call it being a cynical asshole, but I'm tired of these kids thinking that there's a new wave of good, or INTRICATE music, just because they've never listened to this kind of stuff before. They aren't impressive musicians, just actual musicians, at best. Polyrhythms, off-beats, whatever, it's not that impressive. Even Fredrik's not THAT great of a guitarist.

Fredrik is one of the finest legato style players i have heard. His musical vision is second to none. He is highly respected by scores of professional muscians the world over. Plus he is probably the main force behind the hippest metal band on the scene today. I consider him a pioneer and a true innovator. This isnt a world games 40 yard dash where the winner is hands down the best.

@GagaMan214 Sorry, but this kinda music isn't exactly the hardest to compose in your head. Not bashing him, cause I like his music a lot compared to others, but he's absolutely beyond "second" to many other musicians. I think if Fred tried to start something fresh (not just jazz/metal), as well as trying different approaches in melodic and rhythmic structure, he could be a lot better. Examples of people trying new things would be Damon Albarn and Radiohead. They're true musicians.

@davethehostage There are many better guitarists, both in skill, and much more importantly (though most are too musically inept to fucking understand this by now), the sound they've delivered. Phil Keaggy blows every digi-whore djent-fag guitarist out of the water. Prog-rock industrialized music. Not to say it has no place in music, but it shouldn't be the center. So don't be shocked that I don't give a shit about some pseudo-eastern prog-rock band. Encyclopediadramatica explains them best. ;)

@Avoryne Keaggy is a too eclectic for my tastes. Personally I think Gary Moores playing through the 80s is better and more important. To me Frederik is very focused and is always trying to create something new but basically within the same musical areas. Eclectic artists going off in all sort of directions is bullshit. Why should Frederik try something new? It's like a half assed guitar player who takes up bass and becomes 1/2 assed at that too. So what? Do ONE THING well.

@Avoryne I guess im coming across as a bit negative....it's just a matter of preference...personally i find meshuggah and fredrik to be very focused with almost a singleness of purpose.. i think this is why the music they create is so fresh and innovative and what makes them very unique...i just think Phil is more eclectic and explores more textures and colors...im more of the 'do one thing well' school which is why fred appeals to me more

@GagaMan214 Oh no, I understand completely, I would hate to be decent at a lot of things rather than awesome at a few, if not one thing. I liked Meshuggah/Fredrik not just because of the groove, rhythm, and textural quirks, but they were also dissonant, and I'm a total whore for that. But I like Phil not because of his guitar playing itself, but how he can sound coherent and full, even when he's hitting unique notes, he still keeps it sounding natural.

@GagaMan214 My problem with Fred at the moment is one I have with myself in writing, it's not his sense of melody, rhythm, or textures that I dislike, but I think he writes very short, well layered sounding compositions, then shuffles them together. I feel more base emotions with his music, rather than imagining Scenarios with vague plot. But that may just be what older style of music does because it's more familiar, while newer sounds need to grow on you. Hope my rant made some sense.
