  • how could fifteen people not like this?

  • Once in a while you see and hear something so perferct it makes you weep.

  • this video opened the door for me to the talent that is Nickel Creek

  • i thought this was really weird at first, but by the time the song was done it won me over

  • Its a very soulful song, and Dolly sings it with great emotion. Collective Soul did a awesome job, but that doesn't mean it can't be done differently and appeal to an entirely new audience.

  • Beautiful. As a Collective Soul fan, Dolly did a great version. If you love music, this is a treat. The banjo opening is sooooo cooool!!!

  • i love collective soul

  • how could Dolly ruin any song? This was awesome. Anyone ever hear Ella Fitzgerald's cover of the Beatles Savoy Truffle? It's here, just do a search.

  • As a massive Collective Soul fan, this isn't bad at all. At least she did her own thing instead of just copying it.

  • I don't think the original is that great, but keeping that to-be-played-as-"rocking" bridge is terrible in this version. They should have kept the basic same structure but really smoothed it out so it isn't like a genre shift.

  • how was i going to dollywood tickets to watching this i kinda like the song.

  • its hard to fuck up something you created your self.......................fuck off haters.

  • LOVE IT!!!!

  • BARF!!!!!!! You just messed up this song....

  • Well it's important, I think, to not think of the song as belonging to anyone, I love the original just as much if not more but how awesome it is should have nothing to do with how awesome this is. its just two different people, groups, whatever, that wanted to sing an awesome song.

  • srry i like dolly and all she a good singer but she ruined this song so bad it ant funny

  • 2nd best country does rock cover ever..next to Cash's "Hurt"

  • Love that banjo!

  • and with NICKEL CREEK!!!! Gosh I miss them!! :(

  • only 13 people disliked this, which i consider a compliment for a country cover version and 420 likes HAHA

  • Looks and sounds like Jerry Douglas on Dobro?

  • dolly has niceeeee boobies lol

  • Also, what a huge compliment to Collective Soul that Dolly Parton covered their song! One of my all time favorite songs.

  • Genius, what a great song for Dolly. I think I llke hers as well as I like Collective Soul's

  • Hey, the Nickel Creek guy on mandolin. Woot.

  • @pacatrue And the gal on the fiddle is from Nickel Creek!

  • @GooseBuster7 don't forget about Chris!

  • I've always loved the soul and passion Dolly puts into her music. ^.^

  • What are y'all talking about?

  • im not an athiest and I don't think it's good as Collective Soul. I like the enthusaism people have for this song because it's a great one.

  • @josephferrerosa34 ..I am an atheist who thinks Dolly's version is better...lol..sorry

  • Collective Soul are a good band, I have liked them since their first cd, but they haven't got as much talent in the whole band compared to the giant of the industry Dolly is and has in her widdle pinky. Dolly is a legend and an icon that will be loved and fondly remembered long after her passing, while CS are just a faded footnote in pop history.

  • i think this vid sounds better her version theres more quality passion and soul to it im very impressed with dollyy than EVER!!!

  • Anything Dolly does is great! :) I must say, I like this version 100x better than Collective Souls.

  • Dolly could sing me the Cleveland White Pages and make it a Grammy award winning CD! LOL It doesn't make a difference what she looks like cuz it all matters what you see when you close your eyes to LISTEN to the song!

  • Dolly could sing me the Cleveland White Pages and make it a Grammy award winning CD! LOL It doesn't make a diffance what she looks like cuz it all matters what you see when you close your eyes to LISTEN to the song!

  • @josephferrerosa34 uh no, as a athiest latino west coast liberal there is no flaw in this dolly was and is audio bliss

  • @josephferrerosa34 uh no, as a athiest latino west coast liberal there is no flaw in this dolly was and is audio bliss dont sound like an idiot

  • HI

  • God! This is great

  • I liked seeing the members of Nickel Creek in the video.

  • Ed Roland must have been syked that Dolly Parton wanted to cover the song he wrote!

  • One of the great things about this song is it shows the Bluegrass influence in Rock. Both this version and Collective Soul's sound wonderful (at least to me). And the further adaptability of this song can be heard when you listen to the live version done by Collective Soul with an orchestra. Brilliant!

  • It's ok to like this version of a great song, it's ok to dislike it. It's all about personal taste. Obviously from the responses a lot of people like this song, but there are some that don't. As for me I like this version as well as Collective Soul's.

Ripping on others for their likes/dislikes is ignorant. Ripping on others for things that have nothng to do with this song is even more ignorant. Please try to grow up and not pollute the responses.

  • WOW this is all I can say I am throughly impressed with this version they kept almost everything the same the notes and the lyrics. It actually sounds really good in the banjo and guitar in this song. Way to go Dolly!!!!!

  • I like how she covered this song, but I don't care for the camera work or directing of the video. Listen without looking at the video.

  • she does it wonderfully. Her voice absolutely amazes me. she can do a cover of anybody's song and make it her own. <3

  • Nothing wrong with this cover

  • ed rowlands said in an interview, that when dolly calls and says she likes your song and wants to record it, you cannot even think of saying no

  • Those of you who voted thumbs down can go back to listening to taylor swift , justin bieber & their lot. This is true talent

  • Amazing!!!!! Beautiful!!!!!!! Inspiring.

I think covers can be a really good way to explore the musical possibilities a song has to offer. The ida that a song should only be recorded once is kind of closed minded. What's beautiful about music it's its ability to cross borders, languages, styles and be a living cultural expression. If you look at Dolly's discography, you will find a wide range of influences, and if you look at popular music, you can find Dolly's influence all around :)

  • Im usually skeptical when it comes to remakes. Especially when the originally is so good already. Dolly did a wonderful job.

  • she murdered this song!

  • This is an incredible version of Shine. Dolly is gorgeous. The backup singer is angelic and the players are enlightened. The combination lifts me to the gates of heaven.

  • Happy Birthday Dolly!!!!!!!!!!

  • Happy Birthday, Dolly! <3 you!!

  • Ooh, is that nickel creek playing behind her? Amazing! She's a class act.

  • I love this song. Dolly parton is so awesome!

  • I just love how Dolly can make a song her own and kill the original lol.

  • Dolly Parton has a freakin beautiful voice

  • One of the rare covers that country artists do, that do justice to the original versions. You have to be tone deaf not to love this!

  • I see Jim Mills, Jerry Douglas And Dolly. who else is in the video

  • the girl playing the violin, the guy playing the mandolin and the guy playing the guitar are in a band called nickel creek. they are a bluegrass band i believe

  • the 3 others are in a blue grass band called nickel creek.

  • I love this video and recognize some of the A-team players involved. Wish I could find a complete list of who played on this one.

  • I like the both versions it's a good song it can be done by different people in different ways and still be good I also want to add that it seems that the generations that have grown up lacking any real competiotion amongst themselves often transfer that "competing" spirit to artists that they like or don't like - it's interesting indeed sometimes to always se the ;"his one is the BEST that one SUCKS" mentality at play

  • great version

  • It strikes me as odd how when I hear this version of the song, I can't help but think it belongs in a little country church somewhere... I don't get that same reaction with the original, even though it's the same words, just different music.

  • @Shyleel I know what you mean , and i think we get that reaction becuase dolly puts in somewhat of a gospel song when she sings it .

  • @Shyleel I know what you mean , and i think we get that reaction becuase dolly puts in some what of a gospel song when she sings it .

  • Never realized Nickel Creek was in this video . . . awesome!

  • Gorgeousness Incarnate!!

  • Now i do love collective soul and Double D Darling Dolly as a soft spot in my heart, but id have to say both renditions are neck and neck.....i love both break downs up to the random burst of YEA! lol

  • still like collective souls better.

  • I think she actually gets closer to the heart of it than the original, if that is possible. This lady has great taste and a wonderful imagination -- see her covers of Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens and Neil Young.

  • I like Dolly Parton. I like Collective Soul. I don't think the musical gods ever meant for the two to intersect in any way.

  • I remember hearing this on CMT. Leave great songs alone, Collective Soul wrote this song and does it best. Thank you.

  • it is amazing how she takes a rock-pop song and turn it into a blue grass gospel. i truly love it!

  • This is just aweesome!!!!! I always loved this song and she took it to the next level and then some. Thank you Dolly!

  • ive loved her since i was younger and im 32 now god shes a great women

  • Wow! She makes it her own.

  • LOVE that she enlisted Nickel Creek to accompany her on this EXCELLENT song!

  • This reminds me of my BFF Mz Lady Lis.....Shine Little Sparrow Shine!!

    I LOVE Dolly & my BFF :-)

  • this song reminds me of my mom mom r.i.p. u always shine down to me

  • I came here to diss the vid as a fan of collective soul. I just can't do it. This is a pretty good cover! I'm impressed!

  • @TheLimo64 how the hell is this impressive Im sorry but Dolly Parton took a song a completly distroyed it......This song period did not diserve to be touched......I know its a beautifull song and shit but Im sorry if I was one of the members of collective soul I would kick dolly parton in the teeth for distroying such a classic.......This is complete Garbage........

  • @Kennedyiskrazy What the fuck is wrong with you? You really need to stop and think for a moment... that what you've said thus far is complete nonsense. If Collective Soul did not want Dolly Parton recording her version of it, they wouldn't have allowed her to. Who the hell do you think you are?

  • @dbeaver317 I think Im an american that can speek my mind no shit she got permission from the members, but I like rock and grunge music and sum country like Hank Hank jr. and Hank III like basic southern country but I just dont like dolly partons voice at all and a fuckin banjo does not sound good at all with this song......Like I said its complete Garbage.......Collective Soul's version is a billion times better and you can usually never bet the orginall artest when it comes to a great song....

  • @Kennedyiskrazy Your lack of grammar and spelling skills makes your response fruitless and irrelevant.

  • @dbeaver317 theres nothin wrong with my grammer....(and dont bitch like a lil bitch for the fact I just put nothin instead of nothing jackass) so kiss my red white blue and tattooed ass you little bitch!

  • @Kennedyiskrazy Only YOU wouldn't know the difference from proper grammar. Again, like I said: you're irrelevant. Dumbass.

  • @Kennedyiskrazy you are a F***ING fool this song was done right

  • @TheLimo64 Dolly is fucking serious business, I bet Collective soul shit themselves when she wanted to cover it.

  • @TheLimo64 Amazing how well it works, isn't it?

  • Dolly Parton & a group of some of the world's best instrumentalists? What's not to like‽

  • i love this version

  • @gavdomdad Obviously not a musician. This is a great version. Maybe not what you like but others love it. The great thing about music is there is something for everyone. So enjoy what you like but don't trash what someone else likes. It's just different that's all.

  • i love this song

  • I always hated this song until Dolly covered it. This version brings tears to my eyes; Dolly's so amazing!

  • Dolly can't mess a song up, even if she wanted too.

  • this is a good cover

  • Love this version...banjos are the greatest...

  • Thank You; Heaven LEt your Light shine on You & Yours !

  • Nice cover, but it can't reach the original or the pillar's cover!

  • God I want to fuck you Dolly.

  • Okay, maybe I'm weird, but when the instruments kick in at 1:44, I get goosebumps.

  • @walkshe same here! It's pretty sweet!

  • @walkshe You're not weird, you're human.

  • She covered Collective Soul. Well, this is certainly unexpected.

  • wow nicjel creek, Barry Bales, jery douglas...could it get any better.... oh yeah DOLLY!! Crasy... I love this.

  • nickel creek and jerry douglas in the backing band!

  • I love this version of Shine

  • Wow....

This video is an awesome example of how Dolly has been releasing quality music for more than 4 decades, now...

She's SO amazingly talented it blows my mind....

  • eye spy members of nickel creek. awesome.

  • Brilliant!

  • Awesome!!!!

  • It's all good

  • why do ppl hate...this is a great song and dolly did it proud

  • Didn't know there was an original. A friend sent this to me after both my folks died. This was a ray of bluegrass sunshine for this Cali boy. Both versions are great - but gotta love how Dolly made this down home and personal. Beautiful.

  • I think it's cool.

  • Man!... I had no idea this even existed, the banjos are a bit comically at times but it's still brilliant.

  • Dolly is a great singer and great singers can sing any song, doesn't matter who did it "first" a great singer will do it well.

  • Got to say I like the original better, however this was a pleasant surprise

  • I didn't know what to make of this at first, I thought she would butcher this song so bad, nice surprise that she didn't

  • NO other female country singer begins to come close to Dolly in putting together a simple song with great musicians and producing an upbeat praise to life and the Lord. "Great job!" to all who made this music/video possible - thank you!

  • OMG this is freaking great

  • i really liked Collective Souls version but this one... wow... she just sings it great.

  • I LOVE this song.........and she does it justce.

  • Dolly runs deep...this cover prooves that.

  • Man, are u serious?? u need to open ur eyes mate..90's csoul was undeniably awesome.

  • LOL! I guess Mythbusters didn't have to go to all that trouble then.

  • awesome, awesome cover

  • The Ol Girl really did this song justice!

    Nice one Dolly..

  • bueno a mi me gusta mucho esta version pero no voy a olvidar que collective soul hizo la original.

    aguante esta cancion

  • Jesus Christ, this song was written by Ed Roland from Collective Soul, it was covered by her in 2001, in fact this new version won a grammy but the song is from COLLECTIVE SOUL

  • EAST TENNESSEE QUEEN

  • Amen, sister!

  • what a Great cover! Oh Dolly your voice is heaven!

  • Collective Soul did write this song. She covered it just like Johnny Cash did a cover of Nine Inch Nails' song Hurt or Depeche Mode's song Personal Jesus...

  • Dear Lord, I hope for your sake that you are trolling.

  • you're an idiot, how fucking hard is it too wikipedia it?

Dolly Parton covered this (I like her version better)

and Johnny Cash covered Hurt (I know Cash was amazing, but he couldn't time-travel, the NIN version was first)

  • I like Cashes version of rusty cage Cris Cornell wrote it for sound guarden

  • ... seriously?

the collective soul version came out in 1994. this COVER is from 2001.

  • love collective soul. dolly is cool doing this.

  • Man, she´s so beautiful!!!

  • She has an ear for what works for her no matter what it is.. what a gift. What a gal!

  • "The Essential Dolly Parton" 2 cd set was some of the best money I ever spent. Such a talent never never truly appreiciated as a song writer- yes, I know this is a cover. That set is where I first heard this version. Excellent.

  • What a huge compliment to have Dolly cover this song.

  • I read somewhere that Roland and a couple of other C. Soul members didn't know that Dolly had covered this 'til they heard her sing it on Letterman, and they were supposedly so flattered that she did their song that they had flowers sent to her, so they apparently liked it.

  • So beautiful...

  • we are all entitled to our own opinion. i gave you a thumbs up.. but i love dolly's best.! Yey! cause its only fair. peace!

  • in this video she was actually waring 4 inch heels.....try walking through all that in those

  • Well, she's had a lot of practice I suppose. About half a century! =)

  • I love Dolly.

  • She is awesome! I have a clip of Dolly and her HAPPY MARRIAGE!
