I think the galactic center and the galactic plane are not the same. Earth may be 30m yrs from the galactic center... but, be crossing through the galactic equator or plane. The point where the Zodiac crosses the Galactic plane is approximately 7 degrees away from the position of the Galactic center. But the effects of precession only affect our local perspective from Earth: Its similar if you do a handstand, the stars will appear upside down, but they will not get a different gravitational pull on you.

However, the magnetic poles are due for reversal very soon, to the point where we expect it to happen any minute from here to 2015. The earth will absolutely be aligned with the galaxy, but not on the exact date described.

We are not very close to the galactic center. The precession is such a slow process and the position of the earth on 12/21/09 will be similar to the position on 12/21/21. Earth will not be passing through the Galactic plane for another

There is evidence the earth has experienced pole shifts numerous times. However, passing through the center of the galaxy -- there is no human experience since it happens every 26,000 years, so we don't really know what actually could happen. It makes sense that something will, and has before. This why when scientists say "it took X millions of years to create whatever" they are only speculating since if this happened before the world could have changed virtually overnight.
