The Rev was a great drummer and was very technically skilled, but his style of playing was far less progressive than that of Portnoy/Dream Theater and consequently it did not call for the same level of intricacy in the drumming. I really like Avenged Sevenfold's music and I think the Rev was brilliant, but Mike Portnoy is in a whole other ball park.

Portnoy is obviously better. The musicianship throughout his time in Dream Theater will clearly show you that. His skill, precision, dynamics, songwriting and pretty much everything blow the Rev out of the water. You can't sit here and judge by the fact the Rev is dead. He was absolutely a great and talented young man, however his musicianship just isn't up to par compared to Portnoy and any drummer can tell you that.

I think that Portnoy is better about the technique but for me it's not this which make that you are a better drummer than an other. All is about the sound you can make something very easy to make but the sound could be hard to do. I don't know why or how you could seriously compare The Rev to Mike. If he would've recorded Nightmare instead of Mike, you wouldn't be able to tell who's who, because the album's drum track had already been written. Same with any other song. It's just a matter of being able to play them. I'm sure anything the Rev can do any other talented drummer such as Mike can too, and vice versa.

Mike portnoy. The dark eternal night has some fucking insane technical drumming and guitar parts at the 5 to 6 minute Mark, right before the solo. To be honest, evidence for why the rev and syn are not the best on either or their instruments rests in the dark eternal night. The rev is still okay though :3

To be honest, none of this shit can be argued. 1st, Music isn't a competition. It's such a vast field. The two guys are completely different. 2nd, all of the A7X's fans are gonna say the Rev is better, and all of the DT fans will say Portnoy....its common sense. Personally, I'm a huge DT fan, and love MP 100% over the Rev...but that's because I listen to MP. I don't listen to A7X. Although they are both playing metal, they are playing such different metal that there is nothing to do here. :)

I don't know why or how you could seriously compare The Rev to Mike. If he would've recorded Nightmare instead of Mike, you wouldn't be able to tell who's who, because the album's drum track had already been written. Same with any other song. Mike portnoy. The dark eternal night has some fucking insane technical drumming and guitar parts at the 5 to 6 minute Mark, right before the solo. I like both drummers, but mike has very little if any more skill then the rev, and you forgot backup vocalist for the rev, but over all you can't compare the two because you have a younger slightly more inexperienced drummer vs one that has been doing it for 20 years, but for the amount of time the rev had he would have been better then mike after a few more years, but over all I think they are evenly matched except for looks, because who cares what you look like if you sound good
