I once had a night terror mission on only veteran that was a fucking nightmare. The skyranger landed in the middle of the map with a warehouse and a house in front of it. There were 2 cyberdiscs and 3 aliens waiting to shoot all my soliders as they exited the craft... As if that wasn't enough, The warehouse in front of my skyrangers ramp had not 1, not 2, not 3 - but 4 cyberdiscs inside of it.
So, I heard Firiaxis(or whatever they are called) finally are going to remake xcom, and I'm not talking about that shitty FPS game, but before you get your hopes up - its going to be multiplatform = it will be shit. Cancer, cancer everywhere.
@1TtidnaB I'd be tempted to agree on multiplatform (or at least console), but I'd rather not jump to the conclusion outright. Firaxis is about as close as we can get to old Microprose still existing, and their flagship Civilization series has been doing well, still around since it was first produced by Microprose under Sid Meier decades ago. I'm going to cut them some slack and actually look at what they reveal about it before judging.
@paladinstorm I wish I could share your optimism, but I agree that Firaxis have been relatively true to the PC gamers, and that there is a slight chance they might pull it off. Still, when its multiplatform the game has to be dumbed down out of necessity - so we already know it wont be awsome, it can be good though, but like with almost all other multiplatform games we probably will be left with a feeling of wasted potential.
@1TtidnaB How many failures of multiplatform games are turn-based as opposed to real-time, though..? I personally think there's less to get wrong with multiplatform when the game in question is turn-based, at least. I can cite games I initially had a negative reaction to that were originally PC, then made for both PC and console (Supreme Commander 2, for instance- eventually grew on me, though, but still prefer Forged Alliance)... but they are also generally real-time games.
@paladinstorm Even though a turn-based game technically should work perfectly on a console, clicking different stuff all over the screen would take too much time - and things have to be simplified, it will have to be built around the limited console controllers. I have countless times read about developers that had to nearly castrate(*making it aveliable*) games simply because of console controls.
Hehe, I'm gonna send you a "I told you so" message when the game comes ;)
@1TtidnaB I am curious... have you heard of the Front Mission series? Console-only tactical strategy games (except the most recent 'Evolved', which is pretty much an Armored Core clone). Combat of comparable depth to the original X-COM (which I did play religiously, mind). They also remind me of the table-top Battletech game (which I've played in the form of Megamek, a Java-based online-enabled recreation), due to the focus on walking tanks. Plenty others like them on consoles, too.
@1TtidnaB Tactical turn-based is pretty popular in the console markets, is my point. And they generally don't skimp on commands or controls. Also, I'd probably recommend looking at Firaxis' Civ game for consoles to see if that is 'excessive dumbing'... I'm tempted to, as well.
Again, I'd also point at Supreme Commander 2, which wasn't really dumbed down in terms of to controls so much as what I assume was the perceived RTS culture of consoles. There is no such stigma in this case.
@1TtidnaB ... in fact, I'm not sure the 'console culture' was really that big of a factor in the 'dumbing down' of Supreme Commander 2, now that I think of it. It was probably more or less a flawed perception by the developer that the first game generally needed 'streamlining' anyway, and, if anything, the end result bears closer resemblance to mainstream PC RTS (Starcraft clones, at least - the original SupCom bears closer resemblance to C&C clones) than any strategy game on consoles.
@1TtidnaB Your perception just seems to be 'console games are teh evil!' with no willingness to accept that console games can be as deep as PC games, and it is merely the flawed visions of most developers that result in poor multiplatform games, or shallow console games. It's not like PCs aren't host to their own large share of shallow games, either. Mostly in the FPS genre.
In any case, I'm not saying XCOM: Enemy Unknown is guaranteed to be awesome. I just have less skepticism.
I'm not going to say that this game isn't scary because I guess I'm it's just because I'm young I don't think it is particularly scary but surely you can't say this is as scary as amnesia in the dark with earphones in
Shame they simply could not replicate the game on Windows XP/7 etc.
I remember on my final mission on Cydonia where my X-Com Commander kept panicing (bizarre). He blocked an important hallway only one square wide so I had to kill him finish the mission. We didn't tell his family the truth. He died a brave leader. ;-)
I never did the psionics stuff. It was not necessary, although you must change tactics and emphasize psi-defense.
The worst that could happen is night raid against Etherals and you dont know the psihic strenght of your team. I lost who-knows-how-many Skyrangers... :)
@marcus10 You said it! I had to play late at night, when I had time. Just one small lamp turned on. Night missions.Fire coming in from all sides. Mind control, agents panicking, and things going downhill pretty darned quickly! It's kind of a relief that I can't run the game on my current PC!
Ah good times. I remember playing this for the first time. Even bought a PS One copy of the game in the mid '90s which I play on my PS3 from time to time. Wish I could get my hands on a Terror From the Deep as well!
Terror missions at night against snakemen/chryssalids.....the MOST fun!!
The only turn-based game that ever gave me the creeps, largely thanks to the music and sneakiness of the aliens. The music had a creepy atmosphere and the pitch black fog of war meant that you never knew whether there would be an alien standing around that next corner only a metre away ready to rip your marines to shreds or shoot you to pieces. Who else remembers their first ever battle in this game?
You got off lucky. one time i unloaded like..3 guys, everything was cool. then alien grenades EVERYWERE. blowing the shit out of my guys until my sky ranger exploded. After that i cried for a bit and decided i wasnt mentally stable enough to continue playing.
oh that learning was both awesome and infuriating. Sending squads to their unknown doom. This game scared me as an adult moreso than any modern horror game, because you literally were facing a foe you didn't understand.
i remember playing this game and the first person takes one step out and an alien shoots a rocket at him kills everyone but one person and then the last guy got mind controlled, bullshit :(
I still remember the first time I played xcom... my base was attacked in the very first month by mutons. had no real weapons, no armor, nothing... holy shit! How was that possible?
One of the best games ever made. I don't know why they don't just make a true sequel with the same basic gameplay and stop trying to twist it into a shooter. X-COM had more drama in it than your average RPG, and it was all the result of gameplay. When your veteran sharp shooter rounds a corner and is staring a Chryssalid in the face, your stomach just sinks. :)
Even with all of the high-powered graphics and sound of modern games, not a single video game to date has replicated the creepiness of an x-com night mission!
That vid was funny....and realistic if you are not a professional on the first run. What dificulty setting was it? My all time favorite is TFTD, nothing ever beats it, those Heavy Armored Lobster man und the creepy underwater cuthulu atmosphere. I do not like remakes normally, but would not mint one for TFTD nothing wrong with creepy underwateratmosphere and very nighmarish hard aliens. ;)
Hah.. this isn't so bad. At least you killed a few aliens. My very worst was in TFTD.. The first 4 guys I sent out in covering positions got shot up, and the guy who had primed the magnapack explosives got MC'd and ran back inside blowing up the other 4 squaddies >_< Whole team died except for 1 person.. in one turn..
Pff, a terrible raid? A terrible raid is when on your first step your entire group gets wiped with a stunner bomb, whatever that was called. Yes, that happened to me before.
Also, this is why we arrange it so we don't do night missions, kids. ;)
I had a base destroyed within the first week once, there's no way I was able to buy weapons to deal with cyberdiscs or handle mind control or fight back with rookies. Plus I had the ye olde poor base layout upon start. Have to hand it to the AI for being brutally merciless.
The worst incident I have had in this game was as soon as I landed, I was already under heavy enemy fire before I even left the dropship. I was destroyed before the end of my first turn and I had two survivors, both died next turn.
did you ever hear about UFO: Extraterrestrials? its pretty much a remake of Ufo Xcom series but has more guns more tech and more alien bastards to kill off
its better in my opinion and its not like the spin offs with diffrent gameplay (aftershock, afterlight, aftermath)
if you have Steam you can look it up right now and buy it for 10$ though the game never got much publishing wich could explain why you didint hear about it...
@killer21334 lol should have said do a up to date remake of the game lol yea played aftershock and aftermath never knew about afteright thats no tthe flying game 1 ??? lol funny enough downloaded it on my laptop lol + terror from the deep man thats a hard game lol right time to get some sectoids scum thay saw to much lol cheers for that
the game is fun but it is way too difficult in the begining. Technically you have to be saving-reloading the whole time otherwise you will lose a lot fo battles. things even up towards the "middle" of the game but still.
Like I said, great game but many ppl would probably give up in the fiirts 3 missions or so.
@senorcaradeperro lol. you should trying watching Kikoskia's Let's play for this.
simply put it might change yout mind about the saving-reloading :) (he plays on superhuman, never saves, and plays completelly "Rambo" without any tactic and trusts all of his hopes in luck xD he actually did pretty well...)
@orest1s94 I did and if by pretty well you mean he didn't make it to the end then... huh, i rather save and reload. The game is fun but they could have tweaked it a little bit.
hehe i like your video! idneed that was a terrible raid because you were surrounded.
Some tips though, Always skip the first turn because the aliens also have full Time Units, This is why whenever you did a move, you were beign shot at. They see you, they have full TUs and Sectoids have good reactions!. Plus it is best to always have Eectroflares! :D
Man that music is scary as shit...combined with the fact those little bastards come from out of nowhere and everything combined makes this game hella creepy.
oh man........ first thing you need to have in your squad is a tank! without it's help all the soldiers are likely to become meat when you leave the aircraft...
And you also can accomplish the mission without any soldier! only with tanks with HWP rockets)))
In early game, I like to use 2-4 autocannons with incendiary ammo to lit up everything around you when its dark ^^ (in terror missions I use flares for obvious reasons) also first thing I ever buy in this game is a tank - its expendable and usually can take a few hits, perfect for scouting.
I owned the playstation version of this, but I sold it with the rest of my other ps1 games. Now I wish I hadn't. I'm hoping it becomes available to download off my PS3 from the Playstation store someday.
Despite being surrounded, you did have some decent luck. Most of your auto bursts had at least one hit and, if you notice, it took more than one shot to down 2 of your men, which is rare.
A tank being off the Skyranger first would've helped a lot, though.
"Let's make it clear Captain.... Either smoke or light or a tank goes out that door first - understand?! I want to be able to tell the Commander I saw all of you leave, and I saw all of you return!!! "
Yeah bad luck, could have deployed slower and more methodically though, not to mention avoided doing it at night at all!
Also, not nearly as funny as when a blaster launcher missile kills your entire squad at the very beginning....... shutters.... still best game ever imho.
I'd like to see this remade using enhanced 2D graphics, similar to the recent Monkey Island remake. Keep the core game COMPLETELY intact and simply enhance the graphics.
I say that also because 3D remakes of the X-Com formula simply don't work for some reason. It's like the 3D graphics suck the life out of the game.
@TheFlyingTriangle in your opinion, what formulas is it that makes the 1st 2 xcom games such a success? the time unit measure? the in-depth allocation strategy of global finances? the A.I. of the enemy? the randomly generated terrain on missions?
i'd love a remake with touch-ups of the classic, not this "UFO" game that is a terrible rip-off of xcom.
@TheFlyingTriangle When I saw "remake" in there I got a little worried, but I agree with you lol. It would be pretty awesome to have something similar to what Nintendo did with the Pokemon Blue and Red Versions when they enhanced them for the GameBoy Advance.
This reminds me of how unforgiving X-Com could be. The last time I played the game, an alien hiding in front of the craft exit wiped out half of my crew before they left the ship. The time before, I built my first base next door to an Alien colony and they weren't exactly welcoming neighbours either. They invaded our base and killed everyone wthin the first month. I don't recall TFTD being so mean, aside from the one time the aliens killed all my men inside the X-Com craft with a single torpedo.
haha. Im guessing this was on hard or something. there are always tons of aliens round ure ship on that setting. I think the game is rock hard in general. You only had sectoids to play against though, no good weapons, and all ure troops were rookies so it must have been at the beginning. If anyone completed UFO from start to finish without saving then i would be mightily impressed.
I'm glad you got it. I just realized it isn't on Abandonia anymore because it's for sale on Steam and elsewhere so it's protected by ESA. But $5 on Steam is totally worth it.
@Jagvillkollavald the best way to play this is to download epsxe and xcom ufo defense for the ps1 then run it on epsxe no problems just like you used to play.
haha never could finish the game,if you think thats bad,how about loseing battles 60% of the time?and ending up with -188,227,677 funds?now thats a OUCH.
did you ever notice that rocket launcher in ship glitch?
pretty funny,i just walked 2 steps away from the front of the sip inside with a rocket launcher, and it just goes off by itself.lol, its happaned several times when i tried to escape.
I once had my whole squad wiped out within the first few turns coz the damn aliens uses that auto-launcher thing(that guided missile thing with huge explosive radius).
That sucks terribly. I'm forever mentally scarred by that event.
I once had a night terror mission on only veteran that was a fucking nightmare. The skyranger landed in the middle of the map with a warehouse and a house in front of it. The rest of your squad was eliminated as soon as they stepped out of the ship.
You are all alone against a dozen aliens, ready to blast you to pieces.
Alone, you ran away to the map's edge and hid inside a building.
Next turn, you go outside and turn a corner... Five aliens in view, blasters trained on you.
You try to run away again..
*Not Enough Time Units!*

alleyjumperuk 1 year ago
the game is fun but it is way too difficult in the begining. Technically you have to be saving-reloading the whole time otherwise you will lose a lot fo battles. things even up towards the "middle" of the game but still.
Like I said, great game but many ppl would probably give up in the fiirts 3 missions or so.
senorcaradeperro 1 year ago
@senorcaradeperro lol. you should trying watching Kikoskia's Let's play for this.
simply put it might change yout mind about the saving-reloading :) (he plays on superhuman, never saves, and plays completelly "Rambo" without any tactic and trusts all of his hopes in luck xD he actually did pretty well...)
orest1s94 1 year ago
@orest1s94 I did and if by pretty well you mean he didn't make it to the end then... huh, i rather save and reload. The game is fun but they could have tweaked it a little bit.

hehe i like your video! idneed that was a terrible raid because you were surrounded.
Some tips though, Always skip the first turn because the aliens also have full Time Units, This is why whenever you did a move, you were beign shot at. They see you, they have full TUs and Sectoids have good reactions!. Plus it is best to always have Eectroflares! :D
Still good to watch

Man that music is scary as shit...combined with the fact those little bastards come from out of nowhere and everything combined makes this game hella creepy.
Shintsu2 1 year ago
lmao that's horrible.
Gotyeman 1 year ago
To be fair, you were kind of asking for it since you did the mission at night.
BLARGHALT 1 year ago
oh man........ first thing you need to have in your squad is a tank! without it's help all the soldiers are likely to become meat when you leave the aircraft...
And you also can accomplish the mission without any soldier! only with tanks with HWP rockets)))
MrShooterMCGosha 1 year ago
Anyone who suggests HWPs out first doesn't know jack - it's a quick way to lose $150,000, recruits only cost like $50,000 or something.
First thing to do is throw a smoke grenade then end turn.
TheBenEEeee 1 year ago
Flares can do wonders in missions like this
Spoccinatoor 1 year ago
In early game, I like to use 2-4 autocannons with incendiary ammo to lit up everything around you when its dark ^^ (in terror missions I use flares for obvious reasons) also first thing I ever buy in this game is a tank - its expendable and usually can take a few hits, perfect for scouting.

Damn creepy!
Nekrocow 1 year ago
Despite being surrounded, you did have some decent luck. Most of your auto bursts had at least one hit and, if you notice, it took more than one shot to down 2 of your men, which is rare.
A tank being off the Skyranger first would've helped a lot, though.

As I remember , my terrible mission was the first turn then UFO launch the rocket into my space craft and all my man died in one shot.

Happened the same to me, but with a f#@%ing alien grenade...

@HardWarUK Ah. Well, there's a scene in that book where Jonelle said something similar to Ari in "X-COM UFO Defense".
Also, I got both your comment notifications. So are you happy or sad that you made the quote up? ;-)

@kvn8907 Dare I say it - two great minds think alike! :)

Umm, next time? Electroflares. XD
I find it useful to throw them out the bay doors before moving at all, so you know that at least that side is reasonably safe.
MediaFilter 2 years ago 4
Yeah bad luck, could have deployed slower and more methodically though, not to mention avoided doing it at night at all!
Also, not nearly as funny as when a blaster launcher missile kills your entire squad at the very beginning....... shutters.... still best game ever imho.
Mayer501 2 years ago
I'd like to see this remade using enhanced 2D graphics, similar to the recent Monkey Island remake. Keep the core game COMPLETELY intact and simply enhance the graphics.
I say that also because 3D remakes of the X-Com formula simply don't work for some reason. It's like the 3D graphics suck the life out of the game.
TheFlyingTriangle 2 years ago 55
could not agree more.
MediaFilter 2 years ago
@TheFlyingTriangle in your opinion, what formulas is it that makes the 1st 2 xcom games such a success? the time unit measure? the in-depth allocation strategy of global finances? the A.I. of the enemy? the randomly generated terrain on missions?
i'd love a remake with touch-ups of the classic, not this "UFO" game that is a terrible rip-off of xcom.
neond1984 1 year ago
@TheFlyingTriangle same for doom 1 and 2 remakes

@TheFlyingTriangle I disagree

@TheFlyingTriangle That happened. It's called UFO Extraterrestrials. It is Mario rom hack hard.
oEQjet 6 months ago
@TheFlyingTriangle When I saw "remake" in there I got a little worried, but I agree with you lol. It would be pretty awesome to have something similar to what Nintendo did with the Pokemon Blue and Red Versions when they enhanced them for the GameBoy Advance.

aSuperbadassninja 2 years ago
This reminds me of how unforgiving X-Com could be. The last time I played the game, an alien hiding in front of the craft exit wiped out half of my crew before they left the ship. The time before, I built my first base next door to an Alien colony and they weren't exactly welcoming neighbours either. They invaded our base and killed everyone wthin the first month. I don't recall TFTD being so mean, aside from the one time the aliens killed all my men inside the X-Com craft with a single torpedo.

Found a DOS-emulator and installed my retail copy of the game which I bought in early 90's when it came out, cd is still working ;)

Even though this game is available on steam, you can download the X-Com (UFO) Gold Edition... not hard to find!
And its stable on Xp, and vista with a few tweaks.
Xydonus 2 years ago
What kind of tweaks? :O
Zeifear 2 years ago

What sound settings did you use on Dosbox? I've got music and all, just not as detailed as yours.
Wonder what that could be.
I use soundblaster and general midi in the setup.
Jagvillkollavald 2 years ago
Try using XCOM version 1.2.
1.4 screws the sounds up especially in the alien's death throes.
VagabondPraetor 2 years ago
Choose Soundblaster 16 in your Setup and DOSBox conf file (or get a DOSBox front end like D.O.G which makes it easier)
HardWarUK 2 years ago
@Jagvillkollavald the best way to play this is to download epsxe and xcom ufo defense for the ps1 then run it on epsxe no problems just like you used to play.

I once had my whole squad wiped out within the first few turns coz the damn aliens uses that auto-launcher thing(that guided missile thing with huge explosive radius).
That sucks terribly. I'm forever mentally scarred by that event.

TFD. open door, reaction fire of stun grenade into the ship, everybody knocked out, lose it all.
being hardcore and getting a new ship and crew instead of reloading.
