Rommel is regarded as having been a humane and professional officer. His Afrikakorps was never accused of war crimes. Soldiers captured during his Africa campaign were reported to have been treated humanely. Furthermore, he ignored orders to kill captured commandos, Jewish soldiers and civilians in all theaters of his command.
His genius was that he never commanded vast armies with the little he had he chased the British all over North Africa. He very nearly took Egypt. Patton only ever beat him cos he read Rommels book on military strategy. What army he had he was a genius with and he would be at the front with his men and take the risks they had to endure. He would counter attack again and again out manouvre and out wit with his deceptions. Thats why he was called the Fox.
When Hitler found out Rommel had talked to some of those who wanted to dispose of him in the July 1944 bomb plot he sent the Gestapo to Rommel's home. I am surpised they did not send a division of the SS to Arrest him. The Gestapo gave him an ultimatum Kill yourself or there will be a show trial and your family will enter a concentration camp which probably they would never leave alive. one of the most highly respected generals from both sides of ww II, i had the honor to meet a lot of ww II vets mostly from usa, uk, and france when i was doing a semester long term paper in college, they all said how much respect they had for Erwin Rommel, his leader ship and his ability to command. even the PM of UK Churchill came to respect Rommel. hell even US Gen Patton had respect for me though he was rommels chief enemy and rvial. he fought for germany not nazism.

When stationed for 2 years in Heidelberg (7th Army) I chanced to happen-upon a weekly (Friday Night) gathering of former Wehrmacht Officers...that met across the street from the Roten Ochsen (Red Ox).
I think to make fun of me, they asked if I would join them-eventually on a weekly basis. I spoke only limited Deustch, but (they)all spoke very good English. My point? It is...I felt like I was in the presence of Great Men.

Brilliant soldier and an honourable man.
My ex-Para Dad visited his grave along wth a lot of other ex-Paras and their German hosts/friends.
They had a little impromtu ceremony after which each, to a man, of the British Paras saluted his grave (and his memory obviously).

Rommel was a brillant stratigist and general it is a tragedy that he was forced to commit suicide or see his children and family go to the death camps.. and i as a canadian have been telling my 7 yr old son there are good and bad people on both sides of wars no matter who wins. The best way to understand history is to know it and not to repeat the mistakes made in the past. Rest in Peace Gen Rommel you tried to do what was right.

one of the most highly respected generals from both sides of ww II, i had the honor to meet a lot of ww II vets mostly from usa, uk, and france when i was doing a semester long term paper in college, they all said how much respect they had for Erwin Rommel, his leader ship and his ability to command. even the PM of UK Churchill came to respect Rommel. hell even US Gen Patton had respect for me though he was rommels chief enemy and rvial. he fought for germany not nazism.
