are the Dvd releases of this show uncensored? I ask this because it is bull shit that the writers did all of that work to create that great set up in the episode Telethon for Amy's character Leslie to moon her butt but they didn't even show it, even after they probably filmed it. Fucking Bull shit.
Cut out the racial bickering. It's inappropriate, pointlessly inflammatory, off-topic, and goes absolutely nowhere - enlightening no one and angering everyone. Oh wait, I forgot...this is YouTube. I should have never even looked at the comments section. Nothing but idiocy, bitchiness, and bigotry has ever been found here.
instead of depicting characters in equally interactive relationships, this show's producers, Daniels and Schur have modernized non-white inferiority by camouflaging it as humorous and innocent entertainment. This is an updated version of the Mammy images where black women were depicted as subordinate maids and uglified, justifying white superiority. Daniels and Schur should be ashamed to use their talents in such a racist way.
@marquez2008 If Rashida were dark, she would be uglified just as Donna's character. If small towns have blacks, whites, & hispanics then why aren't blacks and hispanics in charge of portraying themselves in TV shows? This show's creators are both white. Donna's role is to support white people in power. Would that be Donna's role if the producers were black and mexican? How would whites be portrayed if the show's producers were black/mexican? Oh, non-racists say "hispanic" not "mexican."
@marquez2008 your logic is that of a toddler. The fact that the contestants didn't speak doesn't matter. All of them, except 1, appear to be white, including April. Tom is Indian but Leslie calls him "the Lybian." She never even explains his job title, unlike her explanation of Mark, "the smart and capable" Brendenawitz. Donna only responds to Leslie's rapping or trivial statements. The 2 white producers who created the show are speaking for everyone, black, Asian, etc. Very racist show.
@lukebutton haha wow! and you say im the toddler? welcome to the real world...this is a show about local government in a small town. this is how alot of small american towns are (i lived in a town where everyone was either white black or mexican-no indians or asians or even south americans) Dont forget Rashida Jones is also black. but shes not part of the parks dept so they must be racist for leaving her out right? just looking @ your page its obvious u seem to have an issue w racism. get help
This is a really racist show. If you notice, the black girl in the beauty pageant didn't even speak. The judges didn't speak to her nor was she shown doing a talent. There were no models of other ethnicities either. Also, Leslie Knoles didn't even introduce the heavyset black woman on the show (Donna) until the 4th episode. Donna never speaks and she just sits there being subservient to white people in power. Sad shame that producers Greg Daniels and Michael Schur are so racist.
@lukebutton i still cant find how this is racist. most of the contestants didnt speak because there is not enough time in the show. April is half puerto rican, tom is indian and he calls in a favor to get him in as a judge and tells them to tell the other judge they already have another asian judge (which means there would of been an asian in there) Donna is not a main character, and neither is Jerry which is why they dont speak as much. Get over yourself and stop finding racism where there isnt
@lukebutton i still cant find how this is racist. most of the contestants didnt speak because there is not enough time in the show. Get over yourself and stop finding racism where there isnt
@lukebutton Wow, you sound really insane. First of all, it's Leslie Knope not Leslie Knoles. Second, the whole pageant scenario was to show that most of the judges only cared about the outside beauty of the contestants and not what they they had to offer intectually or as a talent. If you saw the episode then you would know that they only focused on Trish, the "hot" one, and not the other girls, who were both black and white, that didn't have much to offer physically.
@jonsingh92 I love how you concentrate on things of no significance, "knope," who cares about the spelling of a character's name. Either way, most if not all of the judges were white. I'm a white person first of all, so I'm not a black person who is angry about racism and taking it out on this show. I'm white and I see the racism in this show, it's clear as day. I am a Media Studies professor at an Ivy League university & racism is very present in this show.
@lukebutton "most if not all": you don't say "if not all" unless all the judges were white, and if you saw the episode then you'd know tom was a judge. you can't judge/use something as an example if you haven't seen the episode it comes from. that just leads to taking things out of context and misjudging them.
also if you are a professor, shouldn't you be doing something more important than arguing over a tv show clip on the internet?
@angrycherokee I did see the full episode. Have u heard of the term Cultural Relativism? It means allowing cultures speak for themselves instead of speaking for them. Good Anthropologists do documentaries where the interviewees speak instead of the person conducting the ethnography. Parks & Rec's producers are 2 white men speaking for various races. Why are white men always doing this?Over 90% of media is white controlled. Why are whites using their sole perception for racial depictions?
@will4eagles10 In the Pilot episode, Leslie introduces Tom as a Libyan and never explains his position. But she introduces Mark as intelligent and smart. In Reporter episode, Ron describes Tom as lazy and not a team player while Mark ("smart and intelligent") is out having sex with a reporter.Tom and Donna are both subordinate characters to whites in power.Jerry's character merely covers up the racism to make it seem even, but he's old and fat - an ostracized person in society as well.
@lukebutton but since when is it racist to acknowledge where someone is from? just because tom is lazy doesnt mean it has something to do with his race, its his personality. just because theres not a black boss on the show doesnt make it racist. not a single person can be offended by this show because there is no racism. they are not putting down any race here. the fact that theres a libyan guy in rural pawnee indiana says a lot about how the show is diverse
@will4eagles10 It's racist to refer to Tom's Libyan-ness but not refer to Mark's whiteness. Calling Tom lazy is subordinating him while making Mark seem superior.A libyan in pawnee just means that 2 white producers chose to make their racism subtle. There should be a libyan in charge of writing parts for libyans in the show instead of white guys writing on behalf of various races.Non-white characters always have their color attached to them, whereas white characters are "smart" & "intelligent.
@lukebutton so its racist to announce where hes from? everyone knows if someone is white but not everyone knew he was libyan. its an interesting fact not racist. so there should be libyan writers for an assimilated libyan in an american society? he was raised as every other american. theyre not portraying differences. tom is just another guy. if we cant announce different cultures other than white america then thats racist for assuming everyone wants to be white american
@lukebutton Actually the way you spelled her name is of significance. It shows that you're stupid and you dont really know what you're talking about. That was my basic point.
If you're really concerned about racism in the media why don't you focus on bigger, more successful shows and films rather than a show that's not well known and is struggling in the ratings.
Oh, wow, a professor! Yeah we can be anything on the internet.
I'm a leading cardiothoracic surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital :D
@jonsingh92 I'm a white male and I know that white male producers should not be solely creating content for various ethnic groups. You still haven't answered my question of why 99% of producers are white men writing on behalf of everyone because you are focused on the spelling of Knope. The fact that the show is struggling has nothing to do with its racist content.Since you are a surgeon you should dissect the media and the racism depicted by whites in power. That's easy to do on the Internet.
Its called Satire. Leslie introducing Tom as "The Libyan" isn't making fun of asian people like Tom, its making fun of people like Leslie who still assume you can't be American if you're not white. I'd hate to think how you'd feel watching Four Lions.
@carbronica Obviously, the producers were trying to show Leslie as believing you can't be American if you're not white as you stated. But my problem is the fact that Tom's race is brought up and not Mark or white characters.Tom's indifference to white characters is the problem.Cultural relativism is what Anthropologists use when they do a documentary of a culture; meaning the culture speaks, not the Anthropologist. Why are producers, predominately white males, speaking for all cultures?
@carbronica How do you answer a question with a question. Regardless if there is racism against white people, you don't see the media flooded with non-white producers creating images of white people and their whiteness, it's the other way around. So if there is racism in white-rural America it's time to spread the love through use of technology and media.
@carbronica How long ago was White Chicks relesed?..2004. How many non-whites do we see in advertisements around the city everyday? In HIV ads, however, you see majority blacks, asians, and other non-whites. When there are whites in the HIV ads, they're not the young white guys, they're the older white woman or man. Right next to those ads, you see young white men and women dominating positive ads such as Calvin Klein. Is there an Asian-created "White Chicks" type of movie? How many?
@lukebutton White people get to be in Calvin Klein ads because they are generally more attractive. Black people get AIDS ads because they (percentage wise) are more likely to have AIDS. Cant argue with the facts.
@rhysrohypnol You say whites are in Klein ads because they are more attractive, yet they are usually inferiorly endowed sexually. Whites' attractiveness is made by their domination of ad space, not true beauty. If blacks are in AIDS ads because they outnumber everyone in contracting the disease, then why don't blacks outnumber whites in ads for medicare commercials, since whites look like wrinkled old clucking birds at age 35, whereas blacks at 75 look better than whites who are 30?
@surfingsuicune It reminds me of the Sado Masochist white elites who enslaved blacks when people started to challenge their power, so they created the word "nigger" as a psychological weapon. Now you use the word as a psychological attack cause I'm challenging white-domination. White producers like those on Parks and Rec are using psychology to dominate discourse on minorities. I bet your daddy works for a corporation and talks about dominating markets. Sadism is in your blood and ur just upset
@lukebutton It just makes me consider that all the great inventors, scientists, businessmen, philosophers and writers have been overwhelmingly non-black. Now, you can't blame all that mediocrity on slavery and the white devil, my friend. Eventually, you have to either achieve or own your failure. Quit blaming whites and crying for the shape your life is in. Own it and rise up or shut up and die.
@surfingsuicune You're definitely not educated. First of all, I'm not black I am white. Second, many great inventors were black and this is widely known. Face it, you're a victim of propaganda and you've been sold the "blacks are inferior" product and you believed it. It shows how you lack critical thinking skills which is very sad. The media is spanking your rare hind and you enjoy it because again you are a sado masochist.
@lukebutton And third, the whole point of the Donna character is to stay low-key and say snarky yet funny remarks. Just like the whole point of the Jerry character is to be the butt of everyone's jokes and having a collection of awkward moments.
If the show was racist, then they wouldn't cast an Indian as a series regular.
Your whole point doesn't make any sense at all. Stop trying to find a ''hidden message'' where one doesn't exist and stop trying to create something out of nothing.
