I was recently in Rent, and this was one of the hugest emotional connects in the whole show. Rent is amazing! Sure the characters do stupid things and they can be stupid. They are just poor, trying to survive in New York. It's supposed to glorify "asshole" cause they are good people that do dumb things. Rent is one of the greatest things to touch the planet! Nothing else made me laugh and cry as much as THIS show/movie.

Joanne is the only other character i have sympathy for because she's put into horrible situtations by Maureen who is the most evil character in the show. She incites a riot just a year after the "Tompkins Square Park Riots" and is happy with her self.

As many good things that Beny did, he did them with a smirk on his face. It never seemed sincere. The point is that Benny sold out, and that's a defining characteristic for all of these characters. They're bohemians. DUH!

The music is so completely first rate it makes people overlook the fact that it glorifies a bunch of assholes while at the same time shaming the only character who actually tries to do anything good for both the community and his friends. Every other character other then Benny is a selfish asshole if you bothered to notice it and look past the love stories.

Interesting fact: Even though this is really modern, this musical is based in an opera, "La Bohéme" by Giacomo Puccini, the first act of Rent is really similar to La Bohéme's, and the way Roger and Mimí fall in love is exactly the same as in La Bohéme. :D
