  • Chavaleh means little Chava... 'leh' added to the end of a name turns it into a pet name. Chava is her full name, not Chaveleh.

  • Having to play Chava... was truly a heart wrenching job. I loved, LOVED the fact that each night after the show, people would come up to me and tell me I made them cry. It made me happy... but each night after I cried for my papa, I ran off stage and sobbed during intermission, trying not to smear my make up. I guess some would find it crazy, but to play her, you have to find that innocence inside of you and tear it to shreds. I hope to play her again one day!

  • 1 person was so heartbroken and sobbing so much, that the tears blinded him/her and he/she hit the "dislike" button instead of the "like"

  • I was cast as Hodel in my high school's production of Fiddler my senior year of high school. This was one of the most beautiful, but heartbreaking scenes to perform. I loved the ballet sequence and the music. So, so beautiful. This song makes me miss performing in that show!

  • This song and situation is the focal point of the entire movie, the focus of Tevye's whole being.

It breaks his heart, but he has to draw the line here.

"No there is no other hand"

Oh i cry every time I hear this scene.

Thank you so much for posting

  • My school is doing a production of Fiddler and I have the part of CHAVA and I have to learn the dance ASAP Wish Me LUCK!!!!!!!

  • I would marry a Jewish chick. they are sexy!

  • Chava is her name, but in hebrew, putting 'la' at the end is a term of endearment.

    e.g.:

    Buba - 'Doll'

    Bubala - 'My little dolly'

  • I always get goosebumbs when I hear this song... I just love it!

  • I always liked Chava the best <3

  • Beautiful beautiful rendition of the song. Is this from the soundtrack? It's almost like hearing an orchestra perform it in person. Just amazing.

  • I wonder why their heads aren't covered...

  • @reilly500 a girl only has to cover their head when they get married

  • @reilly500 Only a married women have to cover their heads

  • I love this song and the movie

  • It is a pitty that Tevye needs to choose between the love of his own daughter and the stupid "tradition".

  • this makes me cry...

  • I'm now 46 and know it since my early childhood and it still makes me cry.

  • Jerome Robbins.

  • Perhaps chava is a nickname or a term of endearment?

  • @eroPsych

Yes Chava is a nickname. Her full name is Chavela. =)

  • @Mir11Mir other way round chava the name chavaleh the term of endearment. I'm chana - chanaleh. my 'pet name'

  • @MsChanale

Ah, well thank you, MsChanale. =) That's very interesing.

  • @MsChanale does it have a special meaning? Im pondering baby names^^

  • @coralmeredith Chava is 'Eva' the first woman, the life

  • @coralmeredith Chava is Eva in yiddish - the first woman; the life

  • @coralmeredith it doesn't directly mean "eve", it means life, derived from chai, which means life in hebrew

  • @MsChanale my name is Malka......they call me Malkaleh

  • @iliketosinganddance1 Shalom 'little queen'

  • @MsChanale Shalom haha L'Chaim!

  • @Mir11Mir Her name is Chava. Adding the sound "la" to the end of a name is a term of endearment.

  • @Mir11Mir Chava is her name..my name is Chava..Chavela is her term of endearment..just seen someone already explained this..:)

  • @Mir11Mir No, Chavela is the nickname. Add "la" or "li" to any girl's name to get the diminutive. I'm guessing, may be wrong, that Sarah Lee, the baked goods brand, actually came from someone's name, Sarahli.

  • @eroPsych

Chava is my Hebrew name. It means Eve. Chavaleh is Yiddish. It means literally, "Little bird."

  • @eroPsych

Chava is Hebrew and means Eve. Chavaleh is Yiddish. It means literally, "Little bird."

  • @cynara8 Actually it means little Eve (in English). Little bird in Yiddish is Feigeleh/faygeleh. Pretty pet name though isn't it?

  • I'm sure Chava's husband converted to the Jewish faith and they had kosher children when they immegrated to America. I'm sure of it.

  • why in this song he calls her Chavela but her name is hodel?

I never got that, but my favorite song in the play

  • @demonchild101

Hodel is the girl in the pink, the second oldest of Tevye's daughters. Chava (Chavela) is the third eldest daughter and is wearing the yellow. Tevye is singing to her not Hodel. (The other girl is Tzietel, the eldest). Did that clear anything up? =)

  • @demonchild101

Um, because he's not singing to Hodel, he's singing to Chava (Chavaleh)

  • This is just so beautiful ... it gives me shivers every time .. i can imagine that it would make some people cry their eyes out . its so sweet and when tevyeh rejects his own daughter THAT is what makes me break down .. && i never cry during movies !!

  • This is such a great soundtrack, so a great play :)

  • One word: Beautiful

  • I was Hodel in my high school's production of Fiddler...all three daughters would try not to cry while performing this scene. It's so beautiful and sad <3

  • I can imagine. It really is a beautiful scene. =)

  • so pretty...

  • I'm chava in my drama groups production of fiddler on the roof I'm so nervous x

  • Break a leg! I know you'll do fantastic! =D

  • ich hab das stück im theater gespielt war die sprinthze.... ich musste selbst auf der bühne weinen... so traurig..

  • This song is beyond words...beyond being able to describe it its so beautiful

  • omg i'm crying because i hear this song....

  • i love this movie very much. Bible comes alive to me cing this movie.

    DISCERN THE BEAUTY ..

    MANOHAR. INIDA

  • In lots of ways, it's a sad movie. It's about life.

  • So beautiful and sad. I've listened to this song five gazillion times, and yet I'm still on the verge of tears.

  • I so know what you mean. I love it!

  • you are crazy men

  • I loved in the movie how the three daughters are dancing and each of the suitor takes them away :) I felt so bad for Tevye though. I don't know if I could ever do that. Then he just looks tired and exhausted and beat up from life :( Poor Tevye....though at the end, they hopefully have a happy ending

  • I wonder about that myself, whether later on in his life, well after the events of the movie, Tevye comes to accept Chava back in his life despite her marriage to Fyedka. I agree, it is also very heartbreaking to see her drifting away from the fiddler to Fyedka.

  • I agree I love that scene

  • This is one of my all time favorites. I just saw Topol's Farewell Tour. It was AMAZING!!!

  • My friend plays this on the piano all the time during homeroom and it's so beautiful <3

  • I am SO excited to do this musical in school in June!

  • there are some traditions worth keeping

  • As if this song isn't heartbreaking enough, those final three notes devastate you. Tevye struggling with tradition, changing ways, and the love for his daughter. But this time was too much for him. Truly Wonderful Stuff.

  • oh i know i aboustly love this song ^^

  • @backbiter You're so right about those final three notes...cha-va-leh...chavaleh slipping away from him on that final note.
