This scene really symbolizes how these men and that woman running the whorehouse take advantage of her. She's even served to the men on a silver platter.
This for me, is when it started to get disturbing/uncomfortable. I also think that the auction segment of the movie is the most disturbing in the movie. The most awkward moment, Is during the moment where offscreen you hear her squeal, I felt very awkward. I love Louis Malle's movies though. And also I can't forget to mention the obvious scenes that really made me feel uncomfortable in the later scenes in the film. The ending result of the film left me Sad. Sad for Brookes character. and bellocq

I may be a minority here, but I commend Brooke in taking on the role of Violet. I don't think this movie would have been as meaningful and stirring if Violet was portrayed by an older girl who just looked young. Pretty Baby actually gives us a very REAL look on what life was like in the Red Light districts in the early 20th century. Its wasn't made to be sick or twisted, but realistic.
Even after 30 years it is still appalling that Brooke's mother allowed her to play this salacious role at age 11. It is to Brooke's credit that she managed to grow up with a decent head on her shoulders despite the choice of roles selected for her. I can't imagine her own girls viewing this one day.
