Just saw his jazz band a couple of months ago, amazing stuff. This guy is the main reason why I play drums, his "thumbs up" allows for slick extremely fast play paving for numerous ghost notes. A characteristic of his sound, poetry in motion. Thanks for uploading this, awesome.
@DXSXD It's from the album "I Took up The Runes" & is entitled "Molde Canticle pt4", part of a movement. If you don't own the album I would get it! Manu plays on all the tracks.
If he uses French (or Timpani) Grip, then his playing at the back of the stick is to gain more power. French grip utilises more fine finger control than Germaninc Grip and is really cool for single stroke rolls, light dynamics and other 'quick' rudiments etc.. Germanic Grip predominantly uses the wrist to gain more power whilst sacrificing some of the dynamics found in Timpani Grip....
@TheSonofSniglet Yup. There's also the American grip which is in-between French and German. You also can use all three while playing - just rotating your position. Anyway: Manu Katche really is one of the great drummers!

@batteria123 Well - I oughta know by now: it's the French grip! Of course it's the French grip - Manu's French, ok? So why should he use German grip or American grip or Danish or Egyptian or whatever? What I meant to say is that his grip seems so extreme. Extreme French, or let's say: it's the extreme Manu-Katché-French-Grip! However - French or not - it just looks GREAT (as it sounds)!!!

Anyone remember seeing clips here of Manu playing with Ryuichi Sakamoto? The clips were removed, and I don't know who had them posted, or if any other Manu fans had perhaps downloaded them? I'd buy the DVD if I could find it, but I can't. There was one song called Asadoya Yunta that had particularly tasteful drumming by Manu. Simple, but elegantly played, with impeccable feel, and an innate knowledge of when to pull the groove back and when to push to its front. HIM, in a nutshell. Beautiful!
The phrase starting at 2:40... signature Manu. Sums up his style, in a small way. No one else would have played that.
And that groove that starts at 3:10... highlight of the solo, in my opinion. Wow!
The only part I don't like (as a drummer) are those intensifying power triplets. They're a little cliche'... but then again, they do get the audience going. I guess at the end of the day we must remember that it's them we're playing for, not ourselves, and not other drummers.
Katche was very busy in the 1980's. He recorded with Sting, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Joni Mitchell. If you listen so some of that music, you will be blown away! Katche has perfected rhythmic syncopation, meaning that he plays around the 'beat'. You don't hear the beat, you feel it! Like a gravitational pull. The best example is 'That Voice Again' by Peter Gabriel or "Fallen Angel" by Robbie Robertson. Peace out!
Yamaha Recording Custom. They're great sounding drums, one of the most popular drum series ever manufactured. Just beware, he's mic'd, so most of the sound you're hearing is not the drum at all, but what's done with the sound beyond the mic. In fact, I would say that Recording Customs aren't this round sounding at all; they're punchier "live" . I have Maple Custom Absolutes that sound a little more like this. Also remember... Manu tunes in a unique way, resonant heads much tighter than batter.
I like the way Carter Beauford tunes his drums. The toms just sing! Steve Gadd's tuning is great, too. I love Yamaha drums but I've heard some bad tuning jobs and that will just kill the sound. I like the use of splashes and off-accents that Manu does more than this solo. Then again, I'm not really into drum solos.
the first time i saw him was when i was like 8 years old.He played with Peter Gabriel and i thought he was amzaing even i was just 8 years old.Nowadays i think he´s better than in the earlier times.
I just love Manu's phrasing and he has a beautiful feel!! Manu proves speed is not everything in a drum solo, it's how you use it tastefully. Your spot on! This would have to be one of the best quality video's I too have seen on youtube!!
You guys are all going to be mad at me, but I wish that drummers would understand that the only people who like 6 minute drum solos are other drummers.
That said, this guy really is a wonderfull drummer. One of my favorite tunes is Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" and it seems that no other drummer really contributes as much to it as Manu Katche.
I saw Manu last night. he was truly awesome. I love 6 minute drum solo's - and I'm a keyboard player!! It ain't the length of the solo, it's whether it keeps you interested!!
Love this solo (and pretty much all of his playing). It's always astounding but manages to never stray from his most important elements: class and feel.
MANU IS SOOOO F*KN COMPORTABLE...makes me sick....God I love this dude. Triplets for days...the shit he does with that single kick should be required learning @ ALL workshops, lessons, etc, etc...THX for the post, man...
Yo, you're right. Stewart is a very great and cool one too! I could experience him with * THE POLICE(!) * a week ago! I still can hardly believe it...
One of the keys to Manu's style is his use of internal dynamics in his grooves. He doesn't bash out every stroke, he lets his stuff breathe. He's one of the greatest drummers alive.
He is the only drummer who plays off the drums and cymbals and not through them the tone is obviously in the drums heads and tuning but above all else it's his technique the tone is in his hands!
hello there...:$... this is great music out there:P... but i wanted to know what was the name of the song before the drum solo... i searched for it since a while now... please HELP!!!:( thank you...

@TheSonofSniglet You're right for the most part. But I've got to mention two things:

2. There's no such thing as a Timpani grip. Timpani players use both, the German and French grip.

I said, "No you couldn't."
He then took off Manu's hat and wore it. Then he played drums just like Manu while making some pastries like donuts and muffins.
He said, "This is a chef's hat. You wear it and you can make good, tasty food and play drums like Manu."
Ever since then, I wear the hat and have a career as a drummer and short order pastry chef. I like my new jobs.
Thanks, Manu!

Oh wow, man! Where was it? And was it with the Garbarek Group? I saw him last year with Garbarek...

Saw him with his band in Belfast. Great gig - all good players. Manu is such a soulful player. Reminds me a lot of Jeff Porcaro.

He's a great drummer, I saw him live 2 years ago. He was really good !
I'd like to know what drumheads he uses.

Love this solo (and pretty much all of his playing). It's always astounding but manages to never stray from his most important elements: class and feel.

If you're like me & think Manu is the best drummer around, check out the track "Gautes-Margjit" from Jan Garbarek's CD "Twelve Moons".

Check out Ari Hoenig, you'd definitely dig him if melodic playing is your thing.

yamaha and sonor are the only drums I have ever heard that are capable of producing real musical notes such as the ones heard here. Manu still rocks
