  • Just saw his jazz band a couple of months ago, amazing stuff. This guy is the main reason why I play drums, his "thumbs up" allows for slick extremely fast play paving for numerous ghost notes. A characteristic of his sound, poetry in motion. Thanks for uploading this, awesome.

  • !!!

  • かっこいいな

  • Jak ja kurwa kocham to walenie w bębny! haha :D

  • whats the name of the song they play before the solo?

  • @DXSXD It's from the album "I Took up The Runes" & is entitled "Molde Canticle pt4", part of a movement. If you don't own the album I would get it! Manu plays on all the tracks.

  • fucking amazing

  • holy crap!!!

  • Inspirational

  • at 3:46 he misses the drum with his left hand :P

  • the tune at the beginning reminds me of the tune "John Mclaughlin" from miles davies' bitches brew

  • ...... i.............i............. DAMN! XD

  • the ending was awsome!

  • What a great drummer, fuck yeah!

  • @VenusElectricRecords You got that straight bro!!!!

  • HE S WAS DRUGGED

  • come and see one of my new solo just write "hughes drum solo"

  • you can tell he's actually enjoying his music, and not just playing to entertain the crowd....a lot of modern musicians can learn from this video.

  • Ouf

  • So musical!

  • a modern day steve gadd

  • Whoa Jan Garbarek sounds different...damn. Havent heard a recording of them from later than mid 80s until now. Killin drums though.

  • @AreaQNH870 I'm sure you use this word in its older and original sense, don't you?

  • @1Boodyman1 he does, I guess.Otherwise it would mean he is Justin Bieber lover. ;P

  • @AreaQNH870 grow up metalfag and learn to appreciate some good drumming

  • @AreaQNH870

    Fuck off and die

  • @AreaQNH870 xD

  • If he uses French (or Timpani) Grip, then his playing at the back of the stick is to gain more power. French grip utilises more fine finger control than Germaninc Grip and is really cool for single stroke rolls, light dynamics and other 'quick' rudiments etc.. Germanic Grip predominantly uses the wrist to gain more power whilst sacrificing some of the dynamics found in Timpani Grip....

  • @TheSonofSniglet Thanks for the info.

  • @TheSonofSniglet You're right for the most part. But I've got to mention two things:

    1. It's called German grip, not Germanic grip.

    2. There's no such thing as a Timpani grip. Timpani players use both, the German and French grip.

  • @TheSonofSniglet Yup. There's also the American grip which is in-between French and German. You also can use all three while playing - just rotating your position. Anyway: Manu Katche really is one of the great drummers!

  • @TheSonofSniglet i don't think it's called french grip or germanic grip lol i could be wrong

  • @TheSonofSniglet It's good to be comfortable with a variety of grips, no?

  • Comment removed

  • What a beautiful drum solo! Lots of colors and dynamics here... a style all his own.

  • Se suona con gli occhi chiusi non può leggere la musica........

  • If you compare this to some metal drummers you have no other choice than to say It´s genious!!

  • what's the song called, played before the solo?

  • what's this song called?

  • sweet

  • Im normally not a Jazz fan, more Metal. But this Solo blowed my mind.

  • Manu Katche > Thomas Lange, Travis Barker, Marco Minneman, Mike Portnoy...

  • Not the longest I've ever heard, but definately the best

  • Digged Manu since days with Sting, Tears for Fears. Very unique Jazz-afro cuban style. I read article where he talks about playing bass singles with reflexes, now just saw it done. Really great musician.

  • Exe drummer check out Dire Straits ON EVERY STREET album. He's on that one. Peter Gabrial SO album. love you Manu!!!! Hope to get to France to see him one day.

  • The little Splash cymbals have style. The sound very good!

  • that was f**king brilliant

  • thats what i am talking about.....check out his hand positions on sticks

  • @rudy9485 Right! This is astounding! Is there a name for this stick-holding-style? One thing is clear - it's not the German style.

  • @1Boodyman1 its french grip... xD fits doesn't it

  • @1Boodyman1 just think about where manu's from / where he lives.... it's the french grip xD

  • @1Boodyman1 american or english style

  • @1Boodyman1

I think It can be the French one....

  • @batteria123 Well - I oughta know by now: it's the French grip! Of course it's the French grip - Manu's French, ok? So why should he use German grip or American grip or Danish or Egyptian or whatever? What I meant to say is that his grip seems so extreme. Extreme French, or let's say: it's the extreme Manu-Katché-French-Grip! However - French or not - it just looks GREAT (as it sounds)!!!

  • @1Boodyman1

You're right! Listen and enjoy! ;D

  • @rudy9485 french grip?

  • Where does manu come from?

  • He has the Drum in the Blood! X AMAZING X

  • br Alpha

  • the guy on the cam sucks. dont wanna see his face, wanna see the whole set! anyway... great drummer.

  • looks like yamaha...

  • 61 dislikes... i mean if you dont like his drumming style then don'r rate it at all but he does nothing anoying in this video and he doesn't waste your time so this video is totally not dislikeworthy

  • Manu plays Yamaha Rec Custom drums... already for ages

  • what is the song before the solo ? plz ? I love listening to manu's solo !! great drummer !

manu est un des meilleurs !!!! quelle batterie utilise-t-il ?

  • are you shittin' me....

  • hahaha! Cette vidéo me rapelle qu'en France, notre musique est belle est bien morte! Moi aussi en tapant n'importe ou sur ma batterie, en faisant preuve de "feeling" et en tirant des droles de tronches je peux faire super bien! XD

  • 3:47 --> no hit on the tom :)

  • One of the best drum sounds I've heard, beautiful solo, manu is an artist

  • Man, that has to be the best drum solo I've ever seen and heard.

  • Yhe song is Molde Canticle, maybe part 3 i think!

  • whats the name of the song before the solo ??

  • The sound of this drum is so good!! ;-)

  • Smooooooth!

  • He plays Yamaha and has an endorsement deal. Promo says he plays the beech shell drums.

  • what drums does Manu use?

  • Good question. Here's another one:

He used to play so many different small cymbals that sounded so wonderful and brilliant. Nowadays he uses only two. Does anybody know WHY?

  • @1Boodyman1 A great drummer can make a phone book sound good! Manu is a master of the percussive art, and does not need to rely on many cymbals to create a sound that is perfect for the music. An excellent piece of work represented here! Kudos for posting this gem! Jan Garbarek is awesome!

  • @1Boodyman1

i would say its a personal interpretation of the french grip. sometimes (on cymbals) i use it myself.

  • @1Boodyman1 yamaha oak custom

  • @r4q23 yamaha recording custom, manu katche signature snare (i think its a brass snare)..... tried his snar its truely amazing ! And Zildjia cymbals, avedis/a custom 6" splashes etc. ;-)

  • @r4q23 Yamaha Tour Custom

  • Nice ergonomically friendly kit lay out-Manu is one of the few modern jazz drummers who can combine the hard hitting groove of a John Bonham with the finesse of a Steve Gadd-very nice.

  • Magical mistery drum... Awesome feeling... he's playin drums as a piano....

  • n'importe quoi. Juste du collage, try to create a memorable rythm just like you would be playing for the last time men in 1 minute...please stop ce bafouillage....of drumming since you got started...thanks

  • Guess what?......at 3:15 I start getting a fever....and the only prescription.....is MORE COWBELL !

  • awesome...true artist!

  • manu you are great !!!!!!!!!!

  • Complete virtuosity, shame it's not appreciated by the masses... Maybe if he did some loops for T.I.

  • its the first time I watched a drum solo without feeling bored..long live manu katche!!

  • you meant HEAR?? Music is not to be WATCHED but listened............... no?

  • I ts interesting to see how he handles the drums. That what I meant when I said its interesting to watch.

  • i agree with both of you... Many Katché's playing is both a feast for the eyes AND for the ears!!!

  • Someone said, "Hey if I took his hat off and put it on, I could play drums like that."

    I said, "No you couldn't."

He then took off Manu's hat and wore it. Then he played drums just like Manu while making some pastries like donuts and muffins.

He said, "This is a chef's hat. You wear it and you can make good, tasty food and play drums like Manu."

Ever since then, I wear the hat and have a career as a drummer and short order pastry chef. I like my new jobs.

    Thanks, Manu!

  • Man, I tried the same with Stewart Copeland's gloves...

    And it worked, too!

I now can play drums like him. But not only that - I also can do now all sorts of manual works with the precision and skill of a specialist!

  • You mean like boof things up your ass?

  • I Can tell you also stick alot of cocks in your mouth!!!! No doubt about it...Love Daddy

  • not so bad Manu.

  • Manu have style!!!

  • Anyone remember seeing clips here of Manu playing with Ryuichi Sakamoto? The clips were removed, and I don't know who had them posted, or if any other Manu fans had perhaps downloaded them? I'd buy the DVD if I could find it, but I can't. There was one song called Asadoya Yunta that had particularly tasteful drumming by Manu. Simple, but elegantly played, with impeccable feel, and an innate knowledge of when to pull the groove back and when to push to its front. HIM, in a nutshell. Beautiful!

  • The phrase starting at 2:40... signature Manu. Sums up his style, in a small way. No one else would have played that.

And that groove that starts at 3:10... highlight of the solo, in my opinion. Wow!

The only part I don't like (as a drummer) are those intensifying power triplets. They're a little cliche'... but then again, they do get the audience going. I guess at the end of the day we must remember that it's them we're playing for, not ourselves, and not other drummers.

    Go Manu!!!!!

  • Yes well said, drumming is about entertaining after all

  • Is he playing his 5 1/2" or 6 1/2" Signature Snare Drum?

  • Oh I need this song. What is the name of it???

  • Just great !! ^^

  • if only the audio wouldn't shift out of synch in youtube:(

This is Jan Garabek. On the ECM label.

  • Katche was very busy in the 1980's. He recorded with Sting, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Joni Mitchell. If you listen so some of that music, you will be blown away! Katche has perfected rhythmic syncopation, meaning that he plays around the 'beat'. You don't hear the beat, you feel it! Like a gravitational pull. The best example is 'That Voice Again' by Peter Gabriel or "Fallen Angel" by Robbie Robertson. Peace out!

  • Fantastic Group and Song!

  • What kit is this?? It sounds absolutely amazing!! The toms are SOOO musical

  • det er i alle fall eit yamaha-kit. :)

  • Yamaha Recording Custom. They're great sounding drums, one of the most popular drum series ever manufactured. Just beware, he's mic'd, so most of the sound you're hearing is not the drum at all, but what's done with the sound beyond the mic. In fact, I would say that Recording Customs aren't this round sounding at all; they're punchier "live" . I have Maple Custom Absolutes that sound a little more like this. Also remember... Manu tunes in a unique way, resonant heads much tighter than batter.

  • I like the way Carter Beauford tunes his drums. The toms just sing! Steve Gadd's tuning is great, too. I love Yamaha drums but I've heard some bad tuning jobs and that will just kill the sound. I like the use of splashes and off-accents that Manu does more than this solo. Then again, I'm not really into drum solos.

  • Yo you're right, Carter's toms do sound very beautiful.

  • the first time i saw him was when i was like 8 years old.He played with Peter Gabriel and i thought he was amzaing even i was just 8 years old.Nowadays i think he´s better than in the earlier times.

  • This one of the more interessting drum solos on youtube. But - How far at the end of the stick does he grab it? :P

    Great Respect Mr.!

  • Manu the man :)

  • grande manu !!!

  • hes pretty home made huh.....dosent have the processed genius thing happnin'. hes really natural......his posture is weird tho.

  • manu katche best drummmmer offf the worlllddd

  • one of the best drummers...

  • FANTASTIC!!!! i love the sound of his toms and splash symbals!!

  • That's a sweet sounding kit, love his dynamics, he's very unique.

  • GREAT! One more evidence that not only pop/rock drummers/musicians are great solo-artists!

  • nice technik, look at his hands, he turns they around sometimes....great job man

  • niesamowite!

  • il est vraiment exellent!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • definitly my favorite drummer

  • I've never seen or heard better drumming than this!..It's just amazing!

  • check out bill stewart play the song acrobat, there r a couple vids on youtube of it

    another amazing drummer

  • tks dj...yep pretty amazing too!..but i think Manu is a bit more delicate!

  • yeah delicate is a good word for sure, i feel that. bill tip-toes on those drums but manu is one delicate and passionate mofo haha

  • he was in the jury of French Pop Idol ^^

    very good drummer

  • I fell in love with his drumming after secret world tour. his contribution is awesome! and those tricks he uses.. perfect!

Katche, Colaiuta - these guys know how to play!

  • world's best drummer in my opinion :)

  • Can't wait to see him playing live on 30.11

  • relly this guy is amazing!!!!!!

  • Manu is the most musical drummer today.. I love the way he phrases everything he plays..Does'nt get better than this..DT43

  • wow this is probably one of the better quality videos I have ever seen on Youtube. Nice. Manu is the man.

  • I just love Manu's phrasing and he has a beautiful feel!! Manu proves speed is not everything in a drum solo, it's how you use it tastefully. Your spot on! This would have to be one of the best quality video's I too have seen on youtube!!

  • You guys are all going to be mad at me, but I wish that drummers would understand that the only people who like 6 minute drum solos are other drummers.

That said, this guy really is a wonderfull drummer. One of my favorite tunes is Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" and it seems that no other drummer really contributes as much to it as Manu Katche.

  • Who cares if just drummers like it ??

and by the way, your watching...

  • Absolutely! His Secret World live-interpretation of this song is just..... - incredible!

  • I saw Manu last night. he was truly awesome. I love 6 minute drum solo's - and I'm a keyboard player!! It ain't the length of the solo, it's whether it keeps you interested!!

  • Oh wow, man! Where was it? And was it with the Garbarek Group? I saw him last year with Garbarek...

  • Saw him with his band in Belfast. Great gig - all good players. Manu is such a soulful player. Reminds me a lot of Jeff Porcaro.

  • He's a great drummer, I saw him live 2 years ago. He was really good !

I'd like to know what drumheads he uses.

  • Remo ambassadors on top (coated or clear in some studio settings) and bottom.

  • tasty elegant fabulous Manu.

  • I love the way he always play with the splashes...he always do that and sounds so nice.

  • Love this solo (and pretty much all of his playing). It's always astounding but manages to never stray from his most important elements: class and feel.

  • If you're like me & think Manu is the best drummer around, check out the track "Gautes-Margjit" from Jan Garbarek's CD "Twelve Moons".

  • Awesome solo!

    One of my favorite drummer.

  • Does Anybody know how the song is called, out of which he starts his Drum Solo?

  • Keeps the MELODY alive in a drum solo!

Man I love this guy... FREAKIN MELODIC!

  • Check out Ari Hoenig, you'd definitely dig him if melodic playing is your thing.

  • I love it when people do unconventional stuff nad he is the master of this genre - with accuracy in perfection.

  • yamaha and sonor are the only drums I have ever heard that are capable of producing real musical notes such as the ones heard here. Manu still rocks

  • one of my favorite drummers...

  • Garbriel, Sting, they know a great drum master when they hear one!!!! Manu, you have super feel and soul!

  • Alors...tu décolles ou quoi..?

  • brilliant!

  • Control, Pure energy and dynamics! Katche is one of the best!

  • MANU IS SOOOO F*KN COMPORTABLE...makes me sick....God I love this dude. Triplets for days...the shit he does with that single kick should be required learning @ ALL workshops, lessons, etc, etc...THX for the post, man...

  • manu is brilliant

  • well my god is stewart copland due he dosent know how to express in solos like manue

  • Yo, you're right. Stewart is a very great and cool one too! I could experience him with * THE POLICE(!) * a week ago! I still can hardly believe it...

  • One of the keys to Manu's style is his use of internal dynamics in his grooves. He doesn't bash out every stroke, he lets his stuff breathe. He's one of the greatest drummers alive.

  • Who the hell made fun of rating these comments? +1, +1, +1.... ??? Come on, give them some more pluses!

  • CONTROL

  • He is the only drummer who plays off the drums and cymbals and not through them the tone is obviously in the drums heads and tuning but above all else it's his technique the tone is in his hands!

  • agreed

  • I always loved how his toms sounds....FAT .

  • hello there...:$... this is great music out there:P... but i wanted to know what was the name of the song before the drum solo... i searched for it since a while now... please HELP!!!:( thank you...
