This was great! There will be no 3-peat by Pat Summerall. I will say this as a die-hard Giants fan. The Giants had genuine wars with the 49's and the 49's were worthy opponents.
@disneydanny2 - Hell yes! He made his bones with Parcells as his defensive coordinator. Two super bowls. Then went to Cleveland as a head coach, then back with Parcells as his DC in New England and New York (Jets.) Then he took over in New England, and the rest is history.
@setty079 I had 3 videos posted as this is 3 of 3. The forst 2 got removed for copyright reasons. That had the reasons fake. I don't know the difference between the first 2 and this.

HA HA HA HA!!! THE GIANTS SUPRISED THE 49ERS WHEN THEM BEAT THEM ON THERE OWN HOME TURF, the 49ers really got there hopes to high on winning that game and looking for a three peat to the SUPERBOWL, what I want to the 49ers NEVER UNDERESTAMATE YOUR APPONENT!!! THAT'S FUNNY HOW THE 49ERS LOST THAT GAME WITH ALL THAT TALENT!!!
@MrTeatreeoil The Giants were a great team that year. They went 13-3. They lost 7-3 to SF on MNF earlier in the season. They weren't taken lightly. They had a great defense.
i had an arguement with my friend that this was the biggest win in giants history. he said the super bowl against the pats, but i think since san fran was 2 time defending champs, on their home field and simms didnt start this was a more remarkable upset. anyway you cut it great game

This was one of the best and most physical games I ever saw.Right after the ending the network switched to Dan Rather with CBS news and he just said "What a game."
Believe it or not only two touchdowns (both by John Taylor) were scored during Giants-49ers encounters during that season. The 7-3 game during the regular season was a classic as well.
I had 2 other videos of this game that got removed due to copyright infringement. Wonder if this one didn't cause you can never fully see the CBS symbol.
This was such a well-played game. I believe Craig's fumble was the only turnover of the entire game.
I remember how everyone was paying attention to the flashy Bills offense during the post season and forgot that the two best teams in the NFL were the Giants and NIners.
Then matt bryant in the playoff game that they blew . Bad snap. SHOULD'VE BEEN A PASS INTERFERENCe call. But this meant alot more. What a game. A classic.
But there was an illegal man downfield. That was an o-lineman that was pulled down. The penalties offset and the game was over. But this game was a classic. As a Niners fan, it hurt like no other game, but respect to that Giants team.
I'm not a 49ers fan, I'm a Bears fan who hates the 49ers worse than the Giants. With that said, the GIANTS WERE LUCKY to win that game. The bounces went their way. Plain and simpley, THEY GOT LUCKY!
What a coaching matchup! George Seifert, with Mike Shanahan and Mike Holmgren on one side vs Bill Parcells with Bill Bilichick and Tom Coughlin. All of those guys own at least 1 Super Bowl ring as a head coach. Just a note, Romeo Crennel (Cleveland Browns), Charlie Weis (Notre Dame), and Al Groh (NY Jets, U of Virginia) were all members of the Giants staff too. Not sure about the niners, though, I am sure they had a few more future head coaches on their sideline too.
I remember this game most cuz i couldn't watch it. As a cowboy fan in norcal i just couldn't stomach another 49er championship. My mom worked as a nurse at a local hospital. She said people in there were actually praying in front of the tv at the end. I managed to watch the last minutes but its my great regret I never saw the hit on Montana as it happened.
You are right.Bush league management would have not kept him around that long. Regardless of his 1,000 yard season of 1989, Craig had his second year of not playing well. Also,to say he had a fumbling problem is such an understatement, even in in SB23. Craig was a very good all-around player but never great,1985 not withstanding. Craig could have lasted longer had he switched to receiver, but there still would have been no room for him on the 49er roster at the time. Here, give it to Rathman.
You got to be up front with him at that point. You can't just keep him in the dark. Let him know what is going on, give him time to make the best decision for himself as far as how to and where to continue his career. It was not like they were ruining his celebration
The difference between the 89 and 90 49ers is that the 90 49ers couldn't run the ball against good teams -- especially not against the Giants D that year. Craig's last good year was in 89 -- was a shame, b/c he was probably two more good years from being a HOF, but after 89 was no longer a great player.
Pardon the pun but this was the greatest game ever this is the only thing@11years old I remember L.T recovering the fumble other than the Vince Young comeback this goes #1 then the Vince game#2
This is a classic game. It's been a while but I remember this was during the run up to the Gulf War, and at half time they were reporting Scud missile attacks. Right after it was over they went directly to Dan Rather, who said, "What a game."

One thing I remember from that game. Driving in the car with my father... and the halfback option pass from Dave Megitt to Maurece Carthon, and he dropped it!
People forget that -- this game should have never been that close. Carthon dropped a sure TD pass and Bahr missed a FG (probably easier than the 5 he made, BTW). Thankfully, the Giants still came through.
This is one of the great games of all time. The 'Stick was as quiet as a morgue once the ball went through the uprights. It was so quiet, from the stands you could hear the Giant players yelling, clapping and celebrating.
I've always said the same thing. I'm not even a Giants or 49ers fan but this was one of the greatest football games I've ever seen. I think it doesn't get it's proper due because it was such a smash-mouth game (as opposed to a high scoring game). Of course, to real football fans, it doesn't get any better than this.
These same 2 teams had a classic on Monday Night Football earlier on in the year. Both teams came in at 10-1 and the Niners won 7-3. The defenses really came to play in both games.
I guess if You're a Giants fan this is the best game ever-to win without even scoring a TD-Even though the Niners were 14-2, and back in the NFC Title game at home, they clearly weren't the same team for some reason on offense as they had been, particularly the year before-not to take away any of the credit where it was due
The Niners running game was terrible that year and their only weakness. Stupid Roger Craig had decided to lose 20 pounds so he can be a frick'n model. BTW...he coughed up the ball to give the Giants the chance for that final drive.
That's b/c they were one-dimensional in 1990 -- in 89 they could run the ball, in 90 they couldn't. That difference is what allowed the Giants to completely shut down Jerry Rice in this game.
I am a huge Giants Fan since I was 5. The Giants vs 49ers games of the 80'2 and early 90's were like no other. This game was amazing because it ended the 49ers 3 peat. However an amazing QB was lost. I never liked the 49ers during this time. But, I had a TON of Respect for them. That was an amazing team! A classy team. Thats the difference between this Amazing Team and the Pats. 49ers were just classy.
Many people think this game was the reason Montana left the 49ers, that this game caused that. It's not true. Montana started the next preseason, but had an elbow injury occur. Young took over, then got hurt, and Steve Bono came in. Montana's elbow injury kept him out the whole seasona and part of the next. He was finally traded after the '92 season as Young was playing too well. If you remember, the 49ers hosted the Giants in the playoffs a few years later, and thumped the G-men 44-3.
As a Niner fan this NFC Title lost the Giants hurt the worse of any playoff lost because the 49ers were going for a 3 peat in the Super Bowl. This lost also ended the Montana era for the 49ers.
I am a 49ers fan too. I think the 1989 team is the best ever and although the 1988 team wasnt overly dominant, they were obviously champs. In both 1987 and 1990 they had the NFL's best record, they could have had 4 in a row. Much respect to the Giants of that era, they were the ONLY team to consistently give the 49ers trouble. They beat us three times, never cheap like Washington, never fluky like Minnesota. No team would give the Niners that kind of trouble till Dallas and later Green Bay.
Great post. Agree on all counts! I still remember the 1983 lost at RFK with those two ridiculous penalty calls that placed the Redskins into FG territory and the unbelievable catches by Anthony Carter of the Vikings in 1987. He wasn't open 99% of the time but Wade Wilson would just lob it to Carter and he out-jumped Griffin and Mckyer down the sidelines.
As for 1987,the 49ers still did not have their pass rush in order. Larry Roberts was @DE,and Haley was still @OLB. It was right before '88 season that Coach Wash brought Haley into his office and asked him if he could handle DE.That made the 49er D for the next 4 years. Regardless of how 1987 looked, the 49ers still were not there yet. Also, how is this for a D-Line with nicknames? The 1984 49ers-Soundwave(Dwaine Board),Collision Supreme(Michael Carter),Big Hands(Gary Johnson)Jaws (Fred Dean).
I think their running game had collaped. As a Browns and 49ers fan, I remember seeing the 2-5 Browns--who would finish 3-13 that year--narrowly lose to the 7-0 49ers that year...we were down 17-3 to the 49ers and tied it 17 all before Cofer hit a 45-yarder to win it with :06 left. To give up 17 points to the worst team in the NFL (The '90 Browns) was a sign of things to come.
This game tore me to pieces. There's three things I remember about this game: Montana to Taylor for a 50 yard TD, Roger Craig fumble, and Matt Bahr 47 yarder.
this is an exactly the same date of Sun January 20 and the kicker #9 (Matt Bahr Giants 15, 49ers 13 on Sun Jan 20, 1991) and (Lawrence Tynes on Sun Jan 20, 2008) the Giants would make three time on Sun Jan 20 2025 #3Giants vs #1NFC team NFC championship prediction with future giant kicker #9.
In this game, the Giants were the #2 seed, and the Niners were #1. In the 2007 NFC Championship game, the Giants came in as the #5 seed, and Green Bay was #2. But I never thought about those two games having the exact same calendar date.
I miss Madden and Summerall. Guys like Collingsworth are insipid

The 1990 NFC Championship..

Whatever happened to Williamson and Wright? Wasn't Lott there too?

The 1990 Patriots were worse than the browns
