  • Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper, two of the best albums ever to grace this earth

  • The US version of Rubber Soul is nowhere near as good as the UK version.

  • Its funny, because Pet Sounds ended up sounding a lot different than Rubber Soul. I guess we all get inspiration from somewhere.

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9

I think so. I believe that Sgt. Pepper sounds more similar to pet sounds than pet sounds to rubber soul.

  • @fasterthanbolt yeah, but i also think Brian Wilson took lyrical inspiration from Rubber Soul, in terms of personal songs, not just silly boy-meets-girl song format, instead a more introspective, emotional song format.

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9

Yes I agree. I also believe that the influence of Tony Asher helped Brian growing in that way.

  • The "Rubber Soul" that Brian heard was the American version without "Drive my Car", "Nowhere Man" etc. The American version was more acoustic which actually made it better to some people.

  • @Greenames

    What do you mean man?

  • One too many back-to-back interviews saying exactly the same thing. Maybe two or three too many.

  • Sgt Pepper is better but revolver and rubber soul are the best

  • @gmdinformation What are you a racist as well as an asshole??? I was right you really are a fucking loser as well as a shit talker, wherever you got that crap about "Pet Sounds been panned on released belongs where it deserves to be...in your deluded mind and so how did your negative post end up getting 5 thumbs up and mine end up getting blocked as recieving too many negative votes to view? bet you either did that yourself or got some of yourloser friends to help you.PATHETIC!!!

  • 1:46

This kind of determination is the separating factor between the greatest and the normal. Nowadays, whenever somebody displays an incredible, world-class level skill, most people go "Man, I feel like quitting". The mark of a person with world-class potential is, instead "Man, I feel like surpassing that"

  • who in the world is sgt pepper

  • Pet sounds and revolver were being made at the same time. Revolver didnt influence pat sounds one bit at all

  • pet sounds is just better

  • @jcAetiologyoKathexis I wouldn't go that far. Now if you're talking about Smile, that's a different story. :-)

  • george martin said sgt pepper was an attempt to equal pet sounds

  • @ragingbull2001

Yes. And as Descartes would say the cause is other from the consequences. Two great different masterpieces, two pearls of love. Strange how they make so many fans hate each other.

  • pet sounds is almost at sgt pepper. right up its ass. as close as anything could be to something without quite being there

  • What's that first song playing???

  • i love both records. i seem to go through stages where i like one better then the other but i just cant choose!

  • 1. Magical Mystery Tour

    2. The White Album

    3. Rubber Soul

    4. Sgt Peppers

    5. Revolver

    6. PET SOUNDS

  • With all due respect to Brian Wilson (that truely was a genius) and the rest of beach boys but to me there was no way in Hell that Pet sounds was/is in the same level as Sgt.pepper :\

  • Wait a sec, they're leaving out The Beatles' Revolver album. Revolver came after Rubber Soul. Then Sgt. Pepper.

  • @bradass100 revolver has nothing to do with pet sounds or sgt pepper

  • @ragingbull2001 Let me walk you through the obvious:

    Rubber Soul-1965

    Pet Sounds-1966

    REVOLVER-1966

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band-1967

The point is, The Beatles and The Beach Boys obviously influenced each other during the 1965-1967 period, but the REVOLVER album, that came right smack dab in the middle of that period, was never mentioned. DId REVOLVER not influence the Beach Boys? Did Pet Sounds not influence REVOLVER? That just seems odd since REVOLVER was such a huge album.

  • @bradass100 I would have thought that it was long obvious to anyone that parts of "Revolver" were meant as a reply to "Pet Sounds".When Brian was finishing "Pet Sounds"the Beatles were just starting "Revolver" but the Beatles didnt hear it until June 1966 when Bruce Johnston brought over two Acetates with him to the UK,one for UK Capitol and the other to play to others such as the Beatles,Keith Moon ect.Because of the reaction it caused UK Capitol released it in July 1966(Continued)

  • @bradass100 (From Previous)so by the time the Beatles heard it they were well into "Revolver" otherwise "Pet Sounds"would have probably had a much bigger impact on that album but it did have some impact and the Harmonies on "Here,There and Everywhere" are definitley a sign of that.

  • Both amazing albums!

  • Please Google search: "The Triad: How Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, and the Beatles Changed Popular Music" to see this video featured in my article. Thanks for putting this together!

  • @JenniJaco Dylan sucks

  • Fantastic collection of bits. Thanks for the hard work.

  • Great! Thanks. Always wondered.

  • Pet Sounds KILLS Rubber Soul....

  • @JFBosox33 Not kills, Feeds and loves it, like a mother. Brian never meant to kill the beatles. He respected them. He isn't a soccer supporter. He is a GENIUS.

  • I love both bands. I honestly thinks it's stupid to claim either one is better than the other.

  • "Sgt Pepper...right up there with Pet Sounds" -Wilson....OOOKKKK, Sgt Pepper is ARGUABLY the greatest record of all time...Pet Sounds is good... The only thing that Brian Wilson is better at doing then Paul McCartney is having a bigger ego! (and thats saying something).

  • @tylercox2 according to who? dickriding 60's music critics and the no-mind-of-their-own sheeple who take what other people say as gospel? music is art, art is subjective, now go get an original thought of your own douchebag.

  • @tylercox2 dumb

  • @tylercox2 A bigger Ego than Mc Cartney???Sure your not getting confused with Mike Love

  • @johnboymac2000

    :-) I guess so

  • whats the song playing in the background that starts on 4:25 and ends at 4:35? doesnt sound like anything on pet sounds

  • A Day in the Life>Pet sounds

  • "Endless Harmony" wrongly showed a pic of the UK Rubber Soul, and it's apparent people today think that's what inspired Brian. NOPE. He heard the Capitol version.

  • @Jonee90210

You are correct - when I interviewed Brian, that was one of my questions, and he said it was indeed the U.S. version!

  • @earcandyfilms You interviewed the Brian? That's awesome, BW is an musical GOD. I think the distinction on RS leads to many possible misconceptions...the much maligned Capitol Beatles releases actually managed to have a positive effect on the direction of popular music. Who da thunk it? ;) It's just something I get really hung up about, thanks for being on top of that.

    Great video, thanks!

  • @Jonee90210 What did the cover of the Capitol Rubber Soul look like?

  • @008fox On the original Capitol version the title in upper left is olive-green instead of red.

  • @008fox Exactly the same its looked like since it was released in 1965

  • i was in los angeles when this all happened. everyone vaselated between each whenever the other put something cool out. brian wilson loved the beatles and they loved brain wilson. all of ya can stop arguing about it because you can't comapre genius, unless you may be one yourself :|

  • Too bad the beatles are a millllllllliiiiiionnn times better

  • @TheBeatlesAreNo1 yeeeah! Sgt. Peppers the best!

  • @TheBeatlesAreNo1 Nah, they're at least equals. The Beach Boys just had some tough luck and that's why nobody remembers them today. I love both bands though!

  • We all have our own opinion. I like the Beatles more.

  • I love that ad on the newspaper at 7:45. What are the chances of looking at today´s newspapers and see an ad for a musical creation that is going to be heard for many years to come? Frankly, I think we won´t ever again, since today´s "music" is mostly CRAAAAAAP!!!!

  • I so respect and admire George Martin, an extraordinary gentleman--a class act for sure! When I think of PS vs SP, two superlative albums, and quite different in character, I personally have always favored Pet Sounds. I can't imagine how many times I have listened to this album with complete pleasure through 44 years now!! It has sometimes made me cry for no apparent reason, at the least likely points, something I have never experienced with SP (wtpe of She's Leaving Home).

  • Can you imagine Brian Wilson on the Beatles? My god

  • @jiffygay I can imagine that, but also could imagine Sir Paul clashing constantly with Mr. Wilson over how to do things...maybe they could not be on the same band on those young aged days, LOL...

  • Pet Sounds is my favorite album ever. I love Brian Wilson. Beatles are good too, and I respect them for their creativity, but Pet Sounds is where it's at for me in terms of emotional gratification. What a beautiful, unique album. The Beach Boys get a lot of flack, primarily because Al Jardine and especially Mike Love have all but turned the whole affair into a cheesy nostalgia act, making many moves that have somewhat chiseled away at the Beach Boys legacy. No matter. Beach Boys Forever. <3

  • fucking love pet sounds

  • Graham Nash "not just a bunch of rag heads of from California" comment rankles even David Crosby by the look of it. Nash owes much of his success to the counter culture and it's symbolic epicenter on the West Coast

  • Can u made "how really rubber soul influenced Pet sounds" that would be nice

  • Pet sounds owns the hell out of sgt pepper or anything the beatles has done.

  • It's true, other sources confirm the Beach Boys had a large influence on Sgt Pepper

  • whats the song at 4:30?

  • @ElFlakoRompanTodo At 4:30? That is called "Caroline No", on the Pet Sounds album.

  • Comment removed

  • Brian Wilson stated, "There would be no Pet Sounds without Rubber Soul." Take it as you will.

  • Arbitrary rubbish.

  • @thewaronterror

    Nope...hard, cold FACT!

  • @earcandyfilms

It was the Beatles' Rubber Soul album (American version) that inspired Pet Sounds to begin with. Brian Wilson has admitted that for years now.

  • @thewaronterror Very much established as fact in the annals of rock and roll history. Certainly Pet Sounds was not the commercial success of Pepper, but the linkage between the two cannot be denied. Those who cannot hear the musical linkage would be best served to listen to the artists' opinions from that time. Fortunately, I have done both.

  • @thewaronterror No, it's the truth. McCartney has said numerous times that Pet Sounds was a major influence on the development of the Sgt Pepper album.

  • @Weasler455 The other album he has sighted was "Freak Out "by the Mothers of Invention

  • The Beach Boys biggest flaw was Capitol!

  • is that Stephen Speilberg narrating some of this?

  • @DrGonzo61 No, the A&E biography was narrated by Jeff Bridges, who's a huge Brian fan.

  • @Seej1982 listening back to it it more than likely IS Jeff Bridges but twas weird how much it sounded like Spielberg!!!!

  • imho, Pet Sounds is better than the whole Beatles catalogue.

  • Interesting.

  • Revolver and rubber soul actually influenced pet sounds

  • @PinkZeppelin44

Revolver was not an influence considering it was recorded and released after Pet Sounds.

  • @PinkZeppelin44 the beatles began recording revolver when brian was finishing up petsounds.

  • DOWN WITH EMI LONG LIVE CLAYTON COUNTS

  • Pet Sounds inspired Revolver to.Rubber Soul inspired Pet Sounds.

  • is that a hofner bass brian is using at 3:29-3:36?

  • poor brian...

  • Hey Earcandy...great job on this.....as great as Brian/BBoys/Pet Sounds are...it seems the reputation only grows over time. Sgt Peppers IS phenomenal, but notice as times goes by, it seems that Pet Sounds "buzz" has started to eclipse even Sgt Peppers if that's possible....

  • it is good that you show some facts for those who do not know. When I was a kid in holland, we heard always talking about stones/beatles...when I heard sloop john B in around 67, I was stunned by the rich sound. since then, I saw the guys 4 times.

I totally hooked on Brian, he's a genius. And he has never experienced stereo...!

  • Revolver, Good Vibrations, Rain/Paperback Writer came out in the same year, 1966 along with Pet Sounds. Music was changing fast. Thank you Beatles and Beach Boys!

  • Albums used to be two hits and their b-sides plus filler. After Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper, albums were cohesively entities unto themselves that became bigger than the singles market. By 1968, albums were outselling singles.

  • An interesting premise, but why not just listen to the damned albums instead?

  • @terrryc Duh, dipshit. Have for the last 30+ years. Get yer head outta yer arse!

  • Thanks for the upload.

I find the Beatles to be way overrated (and the Beach Boys so unappreciated). I mean, I love the Beatles ('Rubber Soul' is my second favorite album) but you ask people about Sgt Pepper and they know what your talking about - ask them about Pet Sounds and they'll tell you "that's a funny name".

My belief: Sgt Pepper is the more revolutionary album; Pet Sounds is the most beautiful album ever recorded. I think Pet Sounds is starting to gain a lot of popularity however.

  • hello, they prefer: Sgt Pepper or Pet Sounds

    ???????

  • After I had heard that Paul McCartney thought "God Only Knows" was the best song ever written, I realized that "Penny Lane", written not too long after, has a similar sound/feel to it. I wonder if this was Paul's "God Only Knows".

  • Breathed at that moment too. Great times. Was in 8th grade when the Beatles hit the shore of America. If sent to Hell and given one album choice to listen to for eternity would choose Pet Sounds over Pepper in a heartbeat. It's that good. Utterly timeless.

  • yes, I think The Abbey Road is better album!!!

  • Sgt. Peppers isn't even the best Beatles album.

  • hahaha!!! what is this trying to prove?!

  • Duh...it is obvious...

  • Both albums are great and should be judged on their own merits rather than compared.

  • You're right, Pet Sounds is better.

  • Pet Sounds was not only the best beach boys album, but better than all of the beatles albums. what the beatles had though was just SONGS. their entire catalog is their best achievement. sgt. pepper wasn't even their best album. revolver and white album were their best studio efforts. however, they both didn't compare to pet sounds.

  • @johnowensjr1234

    I totally agree...

I even listened to Pet Sounds once. It was late hour in the evening and for a moment I thought that I could hear my neighbour's dogs howling but I was wrong. It was Beach Boys singing :(

  • Both are incredible. If someone pointed a gun at me and told me to choose, I'd say "shoot me" Thank you, universe, for these beautiful albums.

  • I feel incredibly blessed to have been there when they both came out!

  • confused?!

  • absolutely not!!

pet sounds compare it with sgt pepper it's not bad (sgt. pepper) defenitly not but not as good as pet sounds!

  • false. erroneous. the beach boys were the number 1 band in the UK by the end of 1966. they took over beatle territory, easily.

  • PET SOUNDS is the greatest album of all time period/sgt peppers is a great album but it`s not the beatles best in fact its hard to pick a best with the beatles i mean everybody has there opinion for me it`s hard to choose just like a favorite stones album although i lean towards between the buttons

  • omg

    only 23

  • my favorite 2 albums!!!

  • thanks for this interesting post with hard to find interviews!

  • smoke some marijuana and hear some rubber soul lol

  • @Firebirrd85 Then listen to Smiley Smile.

  • 23 years old ????? oh my god ...

  • Get a good DJ and he will show you how NWA influenced Taylor Swift

  • It's so easy to hear that Pet Sounds is the greatest album of all time here. Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys once said that "pet sounds IS the greatest album of all-time." because he thought that the album was the most romanitc ever in such a fantastic way.

  • One of the Supremes I can't remember which one, once said that she thought they were better than the Beatles. Stupid things are said all the time, Mr. Johnston's comments are no exception. Pepper is miles above Pet Sounds, put on some headphones and listen to Lovely Rita the plethora of sounds thrown at you in a brilliant way is just mind blowing, I won't even bring up A Day In The Life. I like Brian's music but he wrote the boy girl thing to death.

  • Nah. The arrangements and lyrical content on Pet Sounds all follow a similar pattern, and in the end it all comes together amazingly.

  • I love how the two bands both influenced each other, that's why they both ended up so wonderful.

  • @ComDisk16 thats why competition is sooo great! :)

  • I like that you did not give your opinion but instead let the musicians, producers, and their peers do the talking.

I hope all of your videos are as un-biased and non opinionated as this one. Thanks!

  • Actually, I normally do 'comedy' or 'parody' videos. This is one of the few serious ones I've done. When researching this topic - I was surprised at the amount of footage that was out there related to the subject - as a lark I decided to put them all together and see if it flowed.

  • @earcandyfilms and it worked.A job well done Sir
