  • i actually think your piano looks beautiful, really. i find old sorta antique looking piano's really facinating. though shiny new ones are pretty too

  • We bought a fully working piano for £10 at an auction, it's a shame people throw them away for so little! Also give yourself some credit, that sounded pretty good to me, you're not bad at all :D

  • Beeeeuuuutiful sound. Thank you for rescuing it and making it new again.

  • i saw a old upright piano at a stor and it was so uncared for it made me sad :(

  • It doesn't need restoration, but it needs repainting.

  • wow you got that from the trash? pretty lucky i wish my neighbor had an upright to throw away

  • got a 1925 bluthner, sound SO much better than pretty much all newer piano´s i´ve ever played on (and i played many! ;D )

so make sure you get your re-weighted, tuned once every 10 days (if you play often enough) for a while, until it´s stabilizing and sounding good. make some 1 check if the mechanical part got a good response, or if it´s going to be tightened. have fun learning to play this awesome instrument! =)

  • It is worth restoring! Congratulations!

  • well I found a computer in the trash.

  • Good for you! Take some lessons & enjoy yourself! Does it have real ivories? Those pianos have harps (metal plate) that are made of alloys no longer available. They truly "don't make them like the used to." Thanks for restoring this old piano. :) I'm sure it's very happy in your home and it sounds rich even thru the computer.

  • nice sounding piano...regardless how it looks, it sounds fantastic....

  • @JakeWilder0 Thanks! I really need to make a newer video now that I have a camera with good audio. The sound on this old video was really crappy :-)

  • You found that in the trash it sounds good now what loser thew it out LOL

  • Marshall and Wendell was a very high grade piano by the American Piano Company. Congratulations.

  • Beautiful, I wish I could save every piano thrown away on Earth and make sure they go to a good home.

  • Nice Job!

Here in New York City we specialize in removing, disposing of and recycling old upright pianos. Fair rates starting at $149.00 Tom 646 717 7558 direct.

  • I never knew Elvis Presley could play the piano.

  • Good for you mate :)

  • This piano has promise. I like old pianos, but they do need much work. A late friend of mine owned a piano store, and was an RPT. He was very cynical about old uprights in particular. Keep this project going....

  • I had to put a lot of work and money into my 1920 Paul Kolle Upright Piano but it was all worth it.

  • i was just wondering how much would it cost to repaint a upright in glossy black ?thankyou

  • Hehe, well it sounds better than my 1964 Acrosonic.

  • It is a good piano that produces sweet sound.

  • @cody1800212 A man, who wanted to restore his piano took the keys...he should have taken the whole piano instead...

  • It looks like all you need is a strip job

done on it and new varnish. To re-

place the front lid that covers the strings

and hammers you will need the kind

of wood the piano is made of and a

top lid that fits. Other wise the old

piano looks like it's in good condition

in spite of where it's been. Good

    Luck!

  • Want to find one, too...

My friends neighbor has a piano that works but there are no keys! Where do you get a set of piano-keys...?

  • i have a marshall and wendell player piano. yours looks like an ampico model

  • Your piano sounds great, you should post some more videos of you playing.

  • You don't play that bad, you're actually pretty good at impovising

Of course, your hand position is all wrong.. but you could be really good at it

  • Ho yes good sound for your old piano !!

check the sound of my 1920 piano in my video , another sound...

  • That sounded beautiful actually, playing included

  • wow.... that's beautiful.. such a shame anyone would just throw out a piano.. =/

  • Impressive for being found in the trash!

  • i helped refinish pianos one summer...a job

with a parole officer whose hobby was to

cruise around anywhere in north america to

pick up old pianos, refinish them, and sell

them. amazing instruments. and some people

had painted red purple and grey over oak!!

WTF! want to buy a digital piano for chops,

and portability. but i'd almost rather

give up playing. accoustic is timeless.

  • Very charming sound; congratulations. please post a vid when its completely restored and tuned.Looking forward to hear it. All the best

  • WOW! for a piano from the trash it has a reall beautiful sound!

  • yeah it got pretty water logged when their basement flooded, i don't think there is much hope for it. But, if someone comes along like you, I'd say they'll regreat not taking care of it!

  • My friend had a upright grand and the kept it in their basement and now it is ruined forever =( like 1/2 the keys dont work and the ones that do stick and barely play. So sad, how people have no respect for music, instruments, or musical art.

  • Did it get wet? This piano was not at all playable when I picked it up. It was stored for decades in a cold damp garage. Luckily it was very well made and held together well. Just needed a few keys fixed and a major tune up :-)

  • i got a old piano thats all Un tuned and been in my basement for YEARS! like 10 15

should i throw it or restore?

im a musician myself , but i got a synth that replace my piano since....

but it's not the same feeling

what i like about my piano is the keys are ROUGH & paint is stripped so it has a vintage look rustique....

but i dont know if it's hard to restore....

let me know do you need to change all the strings after certain age?

  • you should have it checked by a technician but after a piano hasnt been tuned for a number of years it can sustain quite a bit of damage, you should have taken care of it better

  • @cav0129 His description says he rescued it from the trash, However look into the Reblitz book (probably available at the library) and there is a program called TuneLab which is affordable shareware and will enable you to tune your piano. You can get a tunning hammer reasonably off of ebay (or sometimes fleamarkets) although if it hasn't been tuned at all it sounds damn good.

  • Google "DIY piano restoration" - the first result should tell you all you need to know. :)

  • upright grand? I'm curious what does that look like?

  • I think there should be more people like you, willing to save an instrument instead of throwing it away or destroying it. .

  • I hope you restored that piano. It sounds very, very nice and you do play well.

I don't understand how people can neglect such a nice instrument as a piano. I can't play one but I really enjoy listening to a piano.

  • Sounds really good, I'm hoping to get a grimy old upright to restore (first thing will be to get rid of the awful coat of paint. It's great to see people giving these the love and care they deserve, they sure knew how to build them.

  • yayyyyyyy finally someone with sense enough to rescue one of the old ones. Check out the other freaks who burn and smash them without taking the time to fix them.

  • Old pianos are built like tanks and have a wonderful rich sound. I hate when people wreck them. They don't realize that under all the black grime, there is a beautiful red mahagony piano that someone took great care in building. Someday I hope to finish restoring mine.

  • Many old uprights like this one are not worth the time and money to rebuild. The amount you spend to fix something up with no value you could very easily buy a new, far superior piano.

  • I love the sound. I also have an old Milton. It used to be a player piano. It sounded really bad when I first saw it but there was one note that sounded really good to me. I took the chance I play on it everyday now that it sounds so sweet. I want to learn to tune and regulate and fix these old pianos too. Its not only the steinways that deserve to be restored.

  • I might add that my sustain pedal creaked too until it finally broke while playing some Beethoven sonata. It was a short metal bar that serves as a spring and which was already rusty. How did I fix it? I used a bungee cord instead. Now it hardly makes any noise and is very light. Modern materials has their uses.

  • That was a piano from maybe..1930's-1960's.

You were lucky to find that. Whoever threw it away was an idiot.

  • It is from 1923. I hope to restore it someday.

  • When my science teacher was a sub for my band class she played that.

  • For a guy with CP, you certinaly play better than I do, and the only thing I have is Kleine Levin syndrome and a touch of Lazyitis... :D

  • For not knowing how to play, you sure to an awful good job playing! I'm very happy to see people still care about these old instruments.

  • Thanks, one of my dreams was to be a piano and organ player, but my legs and left hand are too hampered by my Cerebral Palsey. I just like to work on them.

I also have my Hammond T-233 from 1968, an 1888 Estey high-back reed organ, and my 1928 Kilgen theatre organ console that I am trying to restore for MIDI use.

  • I was just wondering, since you have an older Hammond spinet, if you knew what would cause all but three of the drawbars for the upper manual to stop working. On mine, a 1973 Hammond 7182 Cougar model. Everything else works with the exception of the 16', 5 1/3', 8', 4', 2, and 1' drawbar. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
