This thing took off much faster then any 1600 dual port would have.. Although i gotta be honest i kinda love the classic sound associated with these old VW's, but your setup is sweet!
Looks cool, but i am not a fan of chopping up the metal in my bug. It is only original once. If they made a kit that fit without cutting the apron or any other metal, and was quick with good range I would be all over it.
How much range do you get out of that? I work for Corvus Energy, we build 6.5 kWh Lithium Polymer batteries for marine applications and I am thinking of building some sort of rat bug for fun. I need top speed of 80 mph and 50 miles range for my commute, mostly on the freeway. Our modules are 48 V at 140 ah with huge peak amp discharge characteristics, so I am figuring a 144V system with as much acceleration as possible.
wow, really fast. One question: is this controller better than any other curtis? do you use lifepo batteries? if I am not wrrong, this controller can stand up to 300 volts, right? thank you, sorry for my bad english -.-
In my country that's illegal too, you could spent long time and much money to the bureaucracy to test and record that in the public registry, but that's will be not possible...sorry I live in Italy, lovely country but political like shit... here is a mixture of fascists and communists and call it democracy! I love your people and your free minds! Here people walk like horses with blinders, here we can be happy only in a time of day: when we eat spaghetti...
@gio59con That's not entirely true. I assume that you are from Italy? Even though Italien law is extremely restrictive, you can import any EU registered car to Italy without modifications. The *must* register it for you by EU law. So, find some friend in France or wherever and have him register the EV. Then buy it from him and register it in Italy.
@renizer I am currently in the process of registering my car in Germany. The engineers I talked to a positive, but I still have some issues with the general condition of the car. I hope to have everything resolve in two months. I'll let you know if it worked.
@quadraturencoder alright that's pretty nice! couldn't do something like that over here in Austria without serious money spent on some complete TÜV or similar inspection.
@gio59con I never heard any Italian would said something like that (faschists and comunists), and that (horses with blinders), but I must agree at some point with that statement. Which does it means you are above everage Italian. If more people like you would live, maybe someday there will be no faschist, comunists, and other groups. I live in Slovenia, so I know what bad politics is (right now, and before) and how divide people into counterfighting groups. Italy is indeed lovely country (too).
Man - that has excellent take-off! The larger motor does make a difference. Where did you buy the motor from? I'm planning on doing my first conversion build next year. Haven't yet decided if I'll use an older vehicle or a late model fixer-upper.
@leftrightliars HAHAA, These "electric" car guys hate to answer the range question. Thes homemade cars only ever have a range of 25-50 miles if the car is slow. The faster ones have an even slower range. FUCK THA! I will pay for gas so I can drive to where and when the hell I want.
@heatherandpaul2 if these guys use this technology with hydrogen technology, that car will increase its rage and performance better than that of a gas car. good job guys.
@heatherandpaul2 Alot of these guys have both a gas & electric car in the garage incase they need a longhaul. An electric car requires nearly zero maintenance apart from chassis & brakes I pity you the next time you have a head gasket blow, your catalytic converter gets plugged, or need a $2000 transmission rebuild. Its your money to waste, so by all means, waste away
@doyleaudio There is, but it's only found in an AC system. It's what all the big companies use (Toyota, Tesla, Fisker, etc...). It makes it a pain if you're looking for affordability :(
Holy crap! what a fast takeoff!!! how much does that car weigh? I'm converting my 1990 Mazda Miata, and i want THAT kind of pickup speed from a 120V system
Could this system be put in a fairly well equipped 70's VW camper (being a heavier vehicle)? What kind of range?

I don't give a f**k what people think of me for saying this, but I'd rather have a car like this over any modern Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche, etc.
