I must admit though, the last couple of steam engines I bought were wilesco, I have two wilesco's and 6 mamods. Iv'e now got into old agricultural stationary engines, lister and alike so havn't bought a steamer for a year or two.
No, Mamod made a double acting piston with a slide valve so it pushes forward and then pushes back instead of the normal occilating cylinder which pushes one way then uses the weight of the flywheel to push back.
I am quite new to this, so i have to ask: All these great garden railways hundreds of meters long, where do people buy the tracks? Seems very expensive to buy them from Dream-steam or anything like that. Are they home made? Any ideas anyone? Thanks.
We use peco SM32 track that can be bought from directly off peco or dealers such as brandbright. Unfortuantly yes even peco track is expensive but worth the money. I believ tenmille track is cheaper but the few sections in the sidings that we have the plastic sleepers have deteriorated over the past few years.
awesome outdoor layout! the tall viaduct is nice - nice mamod-- i put one of their marine horizontal boiler engines in a 19" wooden harbor tug with rudder radio- 20 minutes on two esbit tabs and i run out of fuel before i run out of water -as its running low on fuel, it puffs thousands of steam rings so i know its time to come back to shore
Until the close of the shot I wondered why you were making the claim but for a Madmod it was certainly performing very well. You got all the mods incorporated, cyls, boiler, lube, reg etc? Compliments on the viaduct too. Paul
I would do a longer video but the mamod is currently indisposed at thee moment. It does appear in another video "A tour of the silverdale light railway" if your instrested.
i've got a mamod steam tractor i was using it one day and unfortunately the traction belt which connects to the fly wheel snapped and now doesnt move any where i want to get a new traction belt but dont know where to get one as it was bought as a present
Ebay is probably the best place. Ive only really dabbled with the railway engines so I dont know where to get spares for traction engines, rollers etc. Sorry I cant help more.
The chuff chuff is just the exhaust pipe cut of and crushed in the middle of the smoke box (also works as a speed restricter). As for the cost it is just a mamod with Ip cylinders, wheels, meths burner, safty valve, filler valve + a silver solerderd boiler. Well there the equivilent parts some on this are homemade.
That Mamod is a 16mm 9F!!! Can pull anything, what a supurb loco! I would be interested to know what modifications you have made to it- my Mamod has had a few mods but no-way could it pull all that rake of wagons!
Its had its boiler silver soldered,+ Ip engineering cylinders, wheels, water feed valve and saftey valve. A homemade lubricator and 3 wick meths burner. To be honest its just a matter of luck it turned out that way. Ive done identical jobs to other mamods and they dont pull that much. If you need any help dont hesitate to contact me. Cecil
Thanks for the offer! Ive added new IP cylinders, wheels and lubricator to one of mine and now it wont budge at all! It will steam, but open the regulator and it wont move!?! Im not sure if this is because I soldered the lubricator in place (because it leaked as a "push fit") and perhaps blocked the steam line? The cylinders seem very stiff too...! Oh well, my other 2 Mamods seem OK, although an MSS Saddle tank I have will only run in reverse!
It probably has a blocked steam or oil line. The Ip cylinders will refuse to move if they do not have a decent supply of oil so it may be the oil line is blocked.
Never heard of that problam before.W hat it might be is youre regulator bypassing water through the cylinders and into the exhaust pipe, then filling the smoke box up with water. If that be the case you could try drilling a vent hole in the bottom of the smoke box to drain any water.
We had to make up a set of moulds one for arches and another for piers. We used one batch of concrete for the grey bases and another for the actual piers etc. the whole thing was cast in situ and is keyed together with rebar just to prevent it cracking in earth movement.
Its taken quite a while and money to get that many wagons but the wait is worth it rather than buy them all at once then have to sell them again to pay off a large debt youve racked up whilst doind so.
Well you sure have got me with all that tech stuf but thats still a grate video. Please post the second video, if just for me to see. I only have one old Mamod Loco, Thanks
I will join your forum when I get the time. As for the Mamod shown here There are quite a few mods. We silver soldederd the boiler. Fitted IP Engineering cylinders a steel wheels. A higher prssure safty valve is also a must as is a water feed valve. Finally a 3 wick meths burner is essential as to get the steam generation required. Thanks for the intrest. If you would like a second vid of the mamod pulling the same train just say so and Ill post it.
Your video is fetching a lot of compliments from the unofficial mamod forum members. If you are not a member already, please join...we want to pick your brain for how you got this loco to be so powerful:
A little engine that could! ;-))

is that on G track type rail? I may place an order if it can run on my current railroad.

@sanddragon99 you can also get a similar loco called Janet for G scale from PPS steam

Yes it is. Umbelievable, you can buy real humas in G-scale!!

I never liked mamods, they don't look real.
but they do have a chuff that is better them most model live steamers
ramonnie007 2 years ago
Well you can buy a chuff pipe for other models it's just a Mamod comes with a built-in chuff pipe.
DAKOTA56777 2 years ago
there better built than wilescos.
In my opinion, mamods are the best for the money.
steamwally 2 years ago
thats true. but when I buy a model steam engine, I'll buy the Wilesco.

am i right in thinkin this has a double acting cylinder like on the centurion tractor?
Mclaren1O 2 years ago
You mean essentially like 2 stroke?
If so, that's always been how they've worked, but not for mamod?
produKtNZ 2 years ago
No, Mamod made a double acting piston with a slide valve so it pushes forward and then pushes back instead of the normal occilating cylinder which pushes one way then uses the weight of the flywheel to push back.
Mclaren1O 2 years ago 4
I think it's got standard cylinders, but with covers over them.
djfireball999 2 years ago
It SOUNDS like it has a pair of double-acting cylinders...listen while watching the rods. There's a Chuff every 90degrees of wheel rotation.
vlmarshall 2 years ago
Its got to be double acting, Theirs no way a normal oscillating mamod could pull that.
Mclaren1O 2 years ago
it is i found one on ebay that had double acting cylinders
DAKOTA56777 2 years ago
This is great! But how did you get it to pull so many wagons? Mine cant even pull a three coach train!
