  • This is lovely and so helpful! I finally get it!

  • Thank you all for taking the time to make a comment -- and for what you said. It means so much to me that you found my little video helpful. I'm sure you will modify this hold to suit your particular needs, but at least it gives you a place to start. Have fun!

  • I can't thank you enough for this video! I've started using this way of holding a yarn a few weeks ago and my knitting is so much faster now! A massive big THANK YOU!!!

  • I met for not foe lol :)

  • I liked the way you demonstrated how to hold the yarn it made it simple to follow! Thank you foe taking your time out to care!!!

  • Loved your deliberate and well explained yarn holding technique- the best I have viewed so far. thank you

  • Wrote too much for one comment! Sorry!

    Just wanted to ask...

The biggest problem I have is how do I swing the yarn round the needle with my index finger without a) Letting go of the needle or b) pushing stitches off? I can't master these things and was hoping you'd be able to give some advice please??

  • @Ryles23 Thank you very much for your kind words. I made this video about holding the yarn because I didn't see any others that addressed this subject well. There are several good videos, however, on making the stitches while holding the yarn continental style. Take a look at them to see what kind of movements will work best for you. The main thing is to keep tension in the yarn and don't put your left index finger down on the needle.

  • Thank you, this was really helpful! :) I think the worst part of doing this is that I get very impatient and angry with myself when I can't do it quickly, but patience is the only key I suppose.

Despite being English I find continental easier... I don't know, feel like I have too much conciousness being right-handed I guess.

  • This is really good!

  • I'm new to knitting and this method looks more productive than the English method, but it feels so unnatural. My left index finger has such a hard time doing this method. On the other hand, throwing tires out my right hand/arm.

  • @jec2nd. It seems to be much easier to learn by just holding the yarn in the right hand and throwing it over, and I think you should do that if you enjoy it. Many people knit perfectly beautifully that way. I think it would be worth your effort, though, to learn the continental method at some point because it is more fluid and faster. Many people have switched from English to Continental, but almost nobody ever switches from Continental to English. Must be some reason for that. :)

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! This was so helpful, and clear, and S-L-O-W enough for even me to understand. I want to echo several of the other comments made--Would you PLEASE consider making more Continental Knitting demo videos? I like your style, Judy! Please??!!

  • @smurfmama . Thank you, thank you. I really made this video because I saw a gap in videos already on utube. They would say it was about continental knitting, but then just whip the yarn around their hand and proceed, leaving us all in the dark about the important step of tensioning the yarn around our hand. Check for other videos on the knitting itself because there are already some good ones. I'll give it some thought, though. Thank you for your encouragement.

  • That was a bit more detailed than most how-to videos. However, I find it impossible to get comfortable with knitting. I know how to cast on, and I know how to do the knit and purl stitches, it's just the stitches are too tight in some spots and too loose in other spots. My stitches are highly inconsistent and I don't know how to deal with that. It's frustrating. I feel like I'm learning to dance with 2 left feet!

  • This cleared my doubts. Would love to have continental style knitting explained by you.

    Thanks a ton.

  • @nikhilb2803 . Thank you so much for your comment. You have given me encouragement to make some more videos.

  • i have been trying to figure out how to hold my yarn in my left hand. thank you soooo much!

  • THANK YOU! I have to agree, this is an excellent demo. Very helpful, clear and understandable. More Please.

  • @spiritrst . Has it been four months since your nice comment? I appreciate it and will try to set up a few more videos, mostly in areas that I don't think are well enough covered.

  • Excellent visual lesson in holding the yarn for continental knitting! I really liked the step by step description and the clarity of both visual and audio. Thank you.

  • WOW!!! I'm really impressed by this! I have seen many videos that have tried to explain knitting stitches but this is the best I've ever seen! MORE PLEASE! :)

  • Your speed and clarity is easy to follow and very helpful. Thank you.

  • Good lesson and good camera work. I like the steady pace of your commentary.

  • This is am amazing demonstration. You speak slowly and clearly and the way you use your hands is very helpful. I like your showing us how every finger has a job to do! And how you repeat everything. I know it will be very helpful for me and I will definitely pass this on to others, especially my friends new to knitting. Thanks for doing this.
