  • i have liked this song by Pat Martino for 35 years!!

  • I just sit and stare, listen and stare and listen some more.... Isn't God's gift to us (in the form of Talented Musicians) just wonderful??? Awesome music! Thanks for posting!!

  • I have had the luck to be student of Landham in a workshop. When you listen to him from close, you can appreciate one of the most tremendous sound a drummer can have

  • you cannot play more tasteful!

  • pat's opening salvo at 7:37 is cool. that drummer is TASTEFUL, sweet solo spots

  • 6:30-6:35 scared me

  • Pat's right hand is so relaxed...

  • giant

  • Now I know why the great steel player Buddy Emmons admired him so much, and played his arrangements on the Pedal Steel Guitar as no one else could do.

  • shit this is sooo goood

  • Is there a DVD of this performance that I can purchase?

  • all Philly guys!

  • it is evident that pat martino rearranged a few letters of his name and his hair and became pat metheny (mr martino having preceded metheny of course) :)

  • alguien que me preste la partitura de este tema por faaaaaaaaaaaaaaa'

  • You havent lived until you see Pat live from just a few feet away !!!!!

    Goosebumps & chills down your spine.....numbing !!!!!!

  • damn i love byron's playing, he's write up their with brian blade, elvin, phily joe etc for me

  • The first few chords there on the organ remind me of McCoy's "Four By Five".

    Great jam!

  • Tremendos!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BADASS

  • BTW, this particular group a pinnacle of the traditional Jazz organ trio format...For pure playing it doesn't get any better.

  • Maybe 2 years after the phone conversation, I went on the road with a lounge/soul band...We had two female vocalists...One night, after a gig, one of them invited me in to listen to some music...When I went in I glanced at her tape collection (before CDs!)...To my surprise it was filled with Pat Martino tapes...I told her 'Wow, I'm shocked to see this...I studied with Pat back in 1975-76'...She said 'I was with him when he had his stroke and lost his memory!'...Talk about coincidence!

  • About 12 years later, I spoke with him on the phone for about 90 minutes, hoping to get some advice on finding a record label for a guitar duo I was working with ...This was after he lost his memory...At the time I did not realize what had happened...Pat is from Philadelphia and he was back living here during this period...We had a beautiful conversation that went on and on, but I later realized that he had forgotten who I was, and probably didn't know who he was talking to!

  • I studied with Pat about the time he released this...First lesson we had he asked me 'Frank, are you familiar with the Fibonacci series (numerical series related to so-called 'Sacred Geometry')?'...I said 'No', then he showed me part of a piece he was writing utilizing it...Pat was quite a character in those days (1975)...He used to smoke Pall Malls...I had two hand written manuscripts books written by him with fountain pen that unfortunately disappeared over the years.

  • I was lucky enough to catch these cats at The Jazz Showcase...utterly AMAZING!!!!!

  • Very Nice!

  • I will never tired to say: Thaks GOD to keep Pat Martino alive.

  • Perfect. Watch where you reserve seats for a Joey DeFrancesco show...you could wind up right in front of the Leslie cabinet and not see anything...

  • how does he get that sound with his guitar? is it his amp settings or is it the fact that he's got a hollow guitar? i've been playing blues and blues rock for the longest while, and recently got into jazz, and was just wondering how to accomplish a sound like that

  • @IamTheRealRocknrolla

Pat uses very heavy strings and a very thick pick. He says he goes through strings every few days when he plays at shows, as the flatwounds go dead in about two days. His right hand is all attack...I think he uses Benedetto jazz pickups.

  • @IamTheRealRocknrolla to get that basic jazz guitar tone. all u have to do is gt a clean sound, put on the neck pickup, and roll the tone knob down to 1 or off. and have the bass knob on the amp higher than the treble and middle. that would give u the basic idea despite what kind of guitar u play

  • thanks a lot!

i've discovered Martino by influence of a friend... very good!!..

  • Saw Pat tongight, June 3, 2010, at Yoshi's doing an interview at their side theatre. The night before he played in the club. Got a newer Benedetto prototype, and his hair is the hippest it's been since the surgery...thick and full at the base of the neck. Total baddass look...no sport coat either...white indian shirt with a black vest. Only thing missing were his giant Miles sunglasses from the late seventies.

  • Such a nice guy too. I met him at the Catalina Jazz Club in LA...totally patient with all my questions.

  • How frustrating! The camera guy has nothing but close ups of Pat's right hand, and we barely get to see what he's doing with the left! He could have panned out just a teeny bit and we would have a complete visual record of this tremendous work. They should never let people shoot video of musicians if they are clueless about music. I hope he got fired, he should stick to weddings, but probably wouldn't get the bride in any of the shots either... Pat, we love you!

  • @badrap657 LOL!!!! Spot on!

  • me to startquebec, just now hearing him.

  • What does that note say on Joey's B-3? I think it might be Demonic. Sincerely, Art Bell

  • @scottwbutler

I would think it was a song list for the set.

  • I am listening to this after listening to a lot of shred. This guy's tone and improve style is sick.

  • The only man to become one of the worlds greatest Jazz Guitarists .... TWICE ... in a lifetime!

  • @Guardian1223 You are right! He had that brain anuerisim and re-learned. He did some painting during his recovery too.

  • Pat.. you're THE man !!!!!

  • Damn this is awesome!

  • my prefeer modern jazz guitar player.....very impressive!

  • Where's that fuckin bass player???

  • the organ player (joey defrancesco) is playing bass with his left hand and feet....

  • This organ player is completly crazy! Walking bass like this...man... just crazy!

  • yeah. he's the best around.... sick part is, he can also play trumpet and sing a little bit.... he's part of a musical family from philly... his dad and brother are no joke either... you should check out the band he was in w/john mclaughlin and dennis chambers....

  • I'll check it for sure! Was looking for some Pat Martino videos and found this. I'm discovering this genious! Thanks!

  • Right on brother, Killer trumpet

  • Bass is from Pat's mind. Dont ya know nuttin?

  • so you think you can play guitar...

  • For me the best guitar-organ-drums trio since Wes and Jimmy Smith.

  • joey is playin bass with his feet.

  • Great jam. I have a studio recording of this tune somewhere in my old vinyl collection.

It's really bugging me: where was the bass player?

  • Unique style, amazing guitar! Pat is the man!

  • Totaly!

  • The hippest of the hip,and coolest of the cool.

  • This is one of my alltime favorite of Pat's compositions.

  • Just like I'll never understand the Creator, I'll never understand the genius of Pat.

  • Great!!!!!!!!

  • definitely killing! This cat has enabled lots of clones like all the other greats! Most will not reach his level of originality due to non similar life experiences no matter how well they clone. Plus the stupid Jim Crow era that affected his bandmates is not legal anymore.

  • jajaja you are deaf my brother, peace.

  • @vinnothelizard

I would not want to play like this ... translation = I cannot play like this and never will

  • @vinnothelizard

vinnothelizard searches and searches for the forest ... he must find the forest, but he can't see the forest ... too many trees in the way!

  • sick music, but so great :D

  • Five stars and favourited.

  • I love this! His "We'll Be Together Again" is one of the most moving albums I own. Pure genious Pat!

  • Man, thanks for posting this. Can't get enough of Pat and Joey D together!

  • That lick at 4:08 is so sick. Definitely adding that one to the arsenal.

  • Incredible Joey D!

  • Yeah, I love Martino's phrasing. He developed a very personal and original view of composition, harmony and improvisation. I've read a few months ago a short introduction to some of his harmony concepts ("Fundamentals")... what a genius!

    Fabryx (NCC)

  • keep woodshedding worshipers for this is hallowed sound....

  • good job!

  • great play

  • actually the three are SURFING... coming along an endless wave... breathlessly, almost no pauses. which is a chacteristic of Martino´s style.

  • To say that Joey DeFrancesco (org) and Byron Landham (drms) come along for the ride is understating their abilities. All 3 are outstanding here.

  • Of course, everyone's great here. I was simply referring to them all riding the 'great stream', not pointing to any lack of ability on their part.

  • OK, It seemed to me you were saying Pat Martino was "carrying" them.

  • Amazing player!

  • Sure swings. Cool composition too.

  • Joey DeFrancesco on organ?

  • Legend
