I have had the luck to be student of Landham in a workshop. When you listen to him from close, you can appreciate one of the most tremendous sound a drummer can have
" I am not happy about the rebirth of the Jesuits. Swarms of them will present themselves with more disguises ever taken by even a chief of the Bohemians - as printers, writers, school teachers, etc. If ever an association of people deserved eternal damnation, on this earth and in hell, it is this Society of Loyola (1816).
Now I know why the great steel player Buddy Emmons admired him so much, and played his arrangements on the Pedal Steel Guitar as no one else could do.
it is evident that pat martino rearranged a few letters of his name and his hair and became pat metheny (mr martino having preceded metheny of course) :)
Maybe 2 years after the phone conversation, I went on the road with a lounge/soul band...We had two female vocalists...One night, after a gig, one of them invited me in to listen to some music...When I went in I glanced at her tape collection (before CDs!)...To my surprise it was filled with Pat Martino tapes...I told her 'Wow, I'm shocked to see this...I studied with Pat back in 1975-76'...She said 'I was with him when he had his stroke and lost his memory!'...Talk about coincidence!
About 12 years later, I spoke with him on the phone for about 90 minutes, hoping to get some advice on finding a record label for a guitar duo I was working with ...This was after he lost his memory...At the time I did not realize what had happened...Pat is from Philadelphia and he was back living here during this period...We had a beautiful conversation that went on and on, but I later realized that he had forgotten who I was, and probably didn't know who he was talking to!
I studied with Pat about the time he released this...First lesson we had he asked me 'Frank, are you familiar with the Fibonacci series (numerical series related to so-called 'Sacred Geometry')?'...I said 'No', then he showed me part of a piece he was writing utilizing it...Pat was quite a character in those days (1975)...He used to smoke Pall Malls...I had two hand written manuscripts books written by him with fountain pen that unfortunately disappeared over the years.
how does he get that sound with his guitar? is it his amp settings or is it the fact that he's got a hollow guitar? i've been playing blues and blues rock for the longest while, and recently got into jazz, and was just wondering how to accomplish a sound like that
Pat uses very heavy strings and a very thick pick. He says he goes through strings every few days when he plays at shows, as the flatwounds go dead in about two days. His right hand is all attack...I think he uses Benedetto jazz pickups.
@IamTheRealRocknrolla to get that basic jazz guitar tone. all u have to do is gt a clean sound, put on the neck pickup, and roll the tone knob down to 1 or off. and have the bass knob on the amp higher than the treble and middle. that would give u the basic idea despite what kind of guitar u play
Saw Pat tongight, June 3, 2010, at Yoshi's doing an interview at their side theatre. The night before he played in the club. Got a newer Benedetto prototype, and his hair is the hippest it's been since the surgery...thick and full at the base of the neck. Total baddass look...no sport coat either...white indian shirt with a black vest. Only thing missing were his giant Miles sunglasses from the late seventies.
How frustrating! The camera guy has nothing but close ups of Pat's right hand, and we barely get to see what he's doing with the left! He could have panned out just a teeny bit and we would have a complete visual record of this tremendous work. They should never let people shoot video of musicians if they are clueless about music. I hope he got fired, he should stick to weddings, but probably wouldn't get the bride in any of the shots either... Pat, we love you!
yeah. he's the best around.... sick part is, he can also play trumpet and sing a little bit.... he's part of a musical family from philly... his dad and brother are no joke either... you should check out the band he was in w/john mclaughlin and dennis chambers....
definitely killing! This cat has enabled lots of clones like all the other greats! Most will not reach his level of originality due to non similar life experiences no matter how well they clone. Plus the stupid Jim Crow era that affected his bandmates is not legal anymore.
where are these licks going.. same shit all the time.. i would not want to play like this! i like to play nice tunes that we all know!! this shit guitar!
Yeah, I love Martino's phrasing. He developed a very personal and original view of composition, harmony and improvisation. I've read a few months ago a short introduction to some of his harmony concepts ("Fundamentals")... what a genius!

actually the three are SURFING... coming along an endless wave... breathlessly, almost no pauses. which is a chacteristic of Martino´s style.
perovaas 3 years ago
To say that Joey DeFrancesco (org) and Byron Landham (drms) come along for the ride is understating their abilities. All 3 are outstanding here.
tbcass 3 years ago 4
Of course, everyone's great here. I was simply referring to them all riding the 'great stream', not pointing to any lack of ability on their part.

OK, It seemed to me you were saying Pat Martino was "carrying" them.
