Les Paul pioneered use of layering guitar parts one atop another, a technique also referred to as multitracking or sound on sound recording. He also speeded up the sound of his guitar. The results were bright, bubbly and a little otherworldly - just the sort of music you might expect from an inventor with an ear for the future.
In 1952, Les Paul introduced the first eight-track tape recorder and finally saw the release of the the gold-top solid body electric guitar that bears his name
It's just wonderful to hear this again! I remember when it came out. Les Paul is alive and well in New York and performs every Monday night, two shows! Age: 90+
@simonsieverts Thank you Simon for reminding me of this beautiful piece. Yes, sadly, Les is gone but at least we have things like this to remind us. I'll never forget him. He was good till the last drop, performing weekly in New York City!
The comments for this document of history are pitifully few. Youtube is terrific for an instant listen to something that takes your fancy. This piece of music is astonishing. Much more than others' novelty speedups that followed . Les Paul, the genius, innovator, pioneer of the electric guitar and modern recording, survivor of two debilitating injuries/conditions is still playing today at over 90 years old. Search for the documentary "chasing sound" (available at time of writing on bbc iplayer)
As with most guitar players, I knew the name Les Paul but not the music. Then I watched a TV programe about him. This is the song that amazed me. So good to find it on youtube and thanks for posting!
Absolutely amazing, still to this day! Very hard to believe this came out in 1948! It's very easy to see where many of the great guitarists took their cue from. This is the master, the man who started it all!
this song is epic. love it. :)
