  • hey there...i love this video..good song..but the version on his cd that he did in the 90s was a bit better...clearer i think. is there any way you can upload that version at all? the cd was called "Songs for America" thanks :) RIP John we love and miss you

  • In the 70's, I was known as the 'Denver Kid'. What a b-u-tiful voice~

  • Being a Canadian and living in Calgary this song has always been special to me. Thanks for posting it.

  • I had no idea he sang song about the Canadian Rockies - thanks for sharing!

  • The lives of great men aren't important. I said that.

  • He did such awesome specials- Bighorn, the Alaska special, The Eagle and The Hawk (with Morley Nelson from here in Idaho), Calypso, the christmas special he did in the clear geodesic dome in Aspen. Too bad they're not on dvds... That's hands down one of my all time favorite songs of his, and he really had the pipes to sing it!!! I saw him in concert in the mid 70's with the huge screens and videos behind him. Man, it was a thing of beauty....

  • I Have a John Denver question that I can never get an answer for!! Please help me!

This song is written about the experience he had in Banff National Park. It was filmed and shown on TV on a saturday morning sports show in the early 70's (I think it was 72) . I watched it several times that year, and fell in love with the music of John Denver.

It was not a concert, it was like a mini documentary.

HELP me find it, it's not on his wiki page either!!??

    thanks

  • @UserNameTakenage Hi. It is from a show he made called Big Horn. John and Tommy Tompkins went up into the Canadian Rockies and make this show. I have a copy of it if you would like to borrow it. Just message me here, and I will get back with you.

  • do you notice how john sings? his facial expression remains calm despite those high notes..unlike other artists whose faces are such disgusting when they sing on high notes..

  • @dgreatcaruso lol yeah, John Denver was so talented, what a vibrato!!

  • what a performence! I wish i could sing like that...

  • This has always been one of my favorite songs by him...one of many...His music is timeless... so much of it still rings true all these years later.....

  • this song is wonderful!

  • he look so cool with those nerdy glasses something........voice so smooth......

  • another awesome song sung by John! :) Lovely, magical, peaceful. John Denver forever!

  • Sad his song cut off before John finished.

  • a poet and a superstar................adored him

  • John Denver we were blessed with you music see you again some day

  • this is as good as a voice can get!

  • One Day I would love to ride the trail he rode in Jasper Alberta, I Once saw the footage from his trip on a documentary that he did. Amazing !! His lover of the Rockies continues to inspire mine, I've to the Rockies and have plans to return soon. VERY SOON, Hopefully I will get to go see his memorial site.

  • @mesquiteguy1221 ~ it was called "bighorn", made just at the beginning of his meteoric rise to fame ~

  • 757AW: Thank You sir. I appreciate the update. His departure from this world is our loss. BUT at least his music and legend lives on.

  • I never really understood this until I moved out west. I moved here because it's affordable, but it's affordable because they've covered this incredible, dramatic desert landscape with junk architecture and chain restaurants. I love to go up the mountain, where you can't really see it anymore.

  • beautiful. i used to listen to jd while flying a plane. i actually met him in 1997, a few months before we lost him. he was great.

  • John totally recaptured the mood of the Rockies of Canada in this superb song.

We had the pleasure of spending six wonderful weeks in and around Jasper late in the Autumn some 4 years ago.

This song brings it all back to me. Thanks for the Memories, John! You are the brightest star in the Sky!

  • My daughter Sarah Anker was the last person to shake his hand as he boarded his bus after the Albert Hall concert at the start of his last World Tour.

Been a fan for 40 years now and still believe he was the greatest ever singer / song writer of all time. The way he was able to put his feeling into words and express his passion through music.

I miss that man and his music! But what a legacy he has left. His music will be played at my funeral and that of my wife to. Till we meet again. RIP

  • greatest music ever His music will never die. Australian Fan forever.

  • I used to sing this to my kids to put them to sleep at night...they always asked for "up in the meadow" song

  • es demasiado hermoso , asi como lo es la musica de John Denver

  • It's stirring to the core to see passion and talent poured out like this....idealism is magical......

  • Yet another CLASSIC from the Master himself, so very sadly missed, but his music will live on forever.

  • WOW what great song!!!! He has so many.. And this is comming from a big 80 Rock fan and Huge RUSH fan... John Denver was/is so good

  • Sing, Henry, sing.

  • 1972. Talking to my cousin on the phone (both in Denver). I hear music in the background. "What's that music?" I ask. "Oh, some fairy. my sister just bought the record today." We hang up. Not ten minutes later, he's back: "FORGET THAT 'FAIRY' COMMENT! GO BUY THIS ALBUM RIGHT NOW! (Rocky Mountain High.) Hang up and GO NOW. Buy it, it's fantastic!" So I did, and the rest, as they say, is history.

  • Back in 1980ish the guy I used to jam with on guitar told me that his dad had heard Rocky Mountain High on the radio when it first came out, and said "we've GOT to get this album. That song is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!"

  • Very cool.

  • Yeah it is, as are all these JD stories.

  • is the most beautiful any more seeing for me

  • One of my favorites (since the early 1970's) too; no one can sing this better than John Denver. RIP, brother!

  • Another one of my favorites. I remember hearing this song in my head as I was on a ski lift. Just at that moment, the lift passed over a beautiful brook and I snapped a picture. That picture always reminds me of this song.

  • I have been to Banff and yes, the Rockies are fantastic. This song is a huge service to their magnificence. I have similar sentiments when I look at the Southern Alps of New Zealand.

  • I remember seeing this show on TV when I was young,I wass blown away by the beauty and the message.Later this was one of the first songs I learned to play on the acoustic guitar.

  • I agree...John was phenominal. To date, his was the best if not one of the best concerts that I've ever been to. He was so personal with his audience. He was second to none! I love singing his music...and I love singing with Singer1957 too!

  • just maybe he was the second comming and people were just too thickheaded to listen and now were back to square one.why is it so cool to be bad and corny to be good?

  • omg!!! MY FAVORITE!!

  • I was just listening to "Evening with John Denver" and, on a whim, searched for the title on the Web and found this WONDERFUL video! Always one of my favorites of John, never heard it on the radio.

"The singer is silent, there still is the truth of the song."

    Thanks to the poster.

  • Can't watch this one without shedding a tear. My favorite John Denver song and my favorite place in this world. Don't know if younger ones are aware, but John was an environmental activist, and worked with Jacques-Yves Cousteau to popularize the cause. He also testified in Washington against censorship of popular music along with Frank Zappa. He made great music, but that wasn't all.

  • I have to agree with this!!

  • He got the rap of being corny, but how can you be corny, when you're sincere? We need people like this in the world today, more than ever.

  • There were 2 times professionally, that John Denver got his heart broken: 1) When he was left off of Frank Sinatra's DUETS album and 2) When he was left off the "We Are The World" recordings/video. Both done because producers thought Denver was "Out of focus"!! He as done more in a month, to help stop human suffering - than all of them have done in a lifetime! When you are remembered in the hearts of those you leave behind -- then you never die!! You are missed!! Peace!

  • @Earthlinked: On a retrospective album of JD's works, the liner notes said that his being left out of the "We Are the World" project was inexcusible. I can only agree. I love the words that came next: "The starving don't care who's chic and who's not."

  • @rakkav Someone - several years ago - did some "study" and released facts that stated that John Denver did more for the starving people in Africa - IN ANY ONE MONTH from 1980 until his death in 1997 - than all of the people in the "We Are The World" song!!!!!!! They sang the song and left. Denver sang volumns - and backed his songs up with actions - something very rarely done in Hollywood or Nashville!!!!!!

  • @Earthlinked: I hadn't heard those exact statistics (or if I had, I'd forgotten them - they may be in the same liner notes!), but they don't surprise me in hindsight. That's why leaving him out of that project was so inexcusible. (Besides, IMO he was a better musician, at least ethically speaking, than many of them.)

    Thanks for the update!

  • MOST think that Denver was left out of the project for one reason jealousy!!! At the time Denver was #4 in all time album sales (125,000,000) and Jackson was #3 (145,000,000). Jackson has since gone to #2 at 750,000,000!! (Elvis has 1,750,000,000 - almost 2 Billion and Jackson is almost half way there!) Now it is Elvis(42), Jackson(50), Sinatra(82) and Denver(53) - (Age at death) - as far as American artist album sales!!! Each sell an additional 1,250,000 per year!!!

  • @Earthlinked Replying from my other channel: again, not at all surprised in hindsight, but it's nice to see the stats! At John's height, his producer claimed (correctly, I understand) that he was "the hottest selling artist in the entire industry". And that wouldn't be the only reason for jealousy, either. Just think of it: a massively successful singer/songwriter who actually stood for something rather than falling for anything...

  • During his height (1974 - 1980) Denver outsold everyone on earth - including The Beatles and Elvis (and Elvis died in 1977 - death ALWAYS adds 5 million) .

The problem was - when he toured - he sold well - when he did not tour - he did not sell anything. His manager - Jerry Weintraub - knew this in 1973 - so Denver was USUALLY on the road for 10 to 11 months of the year! His choice: family or career he chose career! He was paid over $400,000,000 by RCA in his career NOT counting concerts!!

  • @Earthlinked: Too bad then that more of his fans weren't like me. I bought his albums (1976-1980) on the sole strength of their radioplay or presentation on TV, or even because the content looked interesting. I don't remember when I saw him in concert in LA or even when and where I saw him later, but my attendance at those two concerts was motivated by album sales and not the other way around.

  • @rakkav EXACTLY WHAT I SAID - the more he toured - the more albums he sold - PERIOD! And he outsold everybody from 1974 to 1980!!!

  • I love John's songs and this one is a personal favorite. We miss you!!!!!!

  • I listened to this amazing and powerful song during our trip through the Rockies in Jasper and Banff Alberta. My wife got tired of it, but our son and daughter loved it as much as I did...absolutely inspiring! Hope you are resting well JD. Peace!

  • One of the first songs I learned how to play and sing ,great song.did a demo with a bleed over with me singing background, came out great

  • John was my first love in music...."He had me at Sunshine"...lol I moved to Colorado 25 years ago because of his inspiration to be in the Rockies and the love of nature. Miss you JD.

  • "I can't believe how underappreciated his music is." I can. Society's values have changed, and not for the better. All the same, John Denver is still considered one of popular music's most influential musicians. Not enough musicians today are willing to admit it, though. ;)

John was my first and strongest influence as an amateur songwriter. I could not have asked for a better starting point. This song is one of my favorites, and lise2006 says it all as to why. :)

  • @rakkav Pink admitted she's a major JD fan. I loved her before, but she went up 10 0000 places in my estimation after hearing that.

  • Gorgeous video. I love the live version as well; it's even better IMO because it's spontaneous. "Tomorrow is just one of yesterday's dreams". :)

  • This is just a wonderful song and video.

  • great. this is just what i needed today
