  • Flood is mind blowing on this track... best producer of the 90s

  • SPISPOPD

  • Marriage?

  • victorian picture book memories from my disillusioned youth. now im 35 and still disillusioned. thank fuck for the Pumpkins.

  • I think I'm going to queue up the whole album now...

  • Is Pure Smashing Pumpkins!! Love it!!

  • \m/

  • THE FUCKIN SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "to build a bonfire." Classic, saw 'em on this tour.

  • @suggadeg FUCK YEA man i was in 4th grade too, this is the fuckin shit

  • magical

  • the rocket launcher and explosion from DooM are @ 1:20 and 1:55

  • @FillBlunts I always wondered what that noise was haha

  • Comment removed

  • is this the song where the "Doom" explosion is in?

  • @hypekiller yes, more than one

  • i had an acid trip looking at the swirling photo at the end, thanks

  • @nunopumpkin dude.. it doesn't swirl

  • Oh man, 6th grade. 1996. Want to time travel.

  • @JackPantz I was in 4th grade. so sigggggg

  • how come they cut it off at the end?

  • @CTCJakinator if you had the album it would make sense

  • LoL! Where boys fear to tread?LoL!

  • @NoRulesInNam Corgan loves him some Black Sabbath.

  • my favourite part is when leonardo di caprio drowns at the end.....oh no, wait a second...i was thinking of something completely different....

  • 6 people fear to tread...and were never 15 years old!

  • Specifically, it's the rocket launcher from Doom.

The credits for the song say:

Explosion from DOOM courtesy of id Software, Inc. and Bobby Prince Music

  • If you listen carefully to the song, you can hear an explosion taken from the old FPS game "Doom". You first hear it at 1:22 (just before the lyrics start) and it's used at certain points in the song. If you check the liner notes from the album, you see that they gave credit to the game for using that sound.

  • This was THE LAST GREAT ROCK ALBUM. Really, when has anything with FOUR sides with so much strong material come out in the last 20 years? Now we're stuck with jokers in jumpsuits and animal masks tweaking delay pedals.

  • @Syntox "jokers in jumpsuits and animal masks" NICE!

    I completely agree.

  • @Syntox at least those jokers got nyan'd to death on their latest money-stinking videoclip ;) Revenge !

  • @Syntox You've been listening to WAY too much Slipknot, if that's what you're referring too. There's tons of great rock bands nowadays, like Cage the Elephant, The Black Keys, or anything with Jack White in it. Don't be so quick to judge an entire generation of bands.

  • @maalbe987 haha "anything with Jack White in it". The White stripes, The Raconteurs, Dead Weather. It's true though, he's good!

  • How come this gem didn't get radio airplay?

  • @ForgottenSoul700 It's not a single

  • @121280kkt C'mon, you can figure this one out by ear. Just tune a half step down.

  • @121280kkt songsterr . com or ultimate-guitar . com should help!! :D

  • "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness"? I bet that's where Scott Pilgrim Volume 3 got its name.

  • @TheAmazingMaxsteele2 I wouldn't doubt it, because he wears a SP shirt with the heart and he wears a Zero shirt like the one Billy wore only it was short-sleeved.

  • This song would be perfect for an "awesome guy walk." you know the action hero in the leather jacket that makes walking down the street look like its the coolest thing in the world.

  • Hell I used to make love to it.

  • woaaaah!...psychodelic!

  • Fantastic!!!!

  • This is so cool!! Not only is it one of my favorite Smashing Pumpkin songs (to use the term loosely; I have many, MANY "favorite" Smashing Pumpkins songs), but I think it's awesome how much you did with just the album cover. I prefer imaginative graphics over extensive special effects, anyway. Thank you!!

  • @niggiface I agree with your comment!

  • One of the albums that defined my high school days..great song

  • 1st song i learnt to play all of on the guitar :D

  • 1:20 Doom Rocket Launcher Sound

  • This combined with "Bodies" is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song!

  • who wants them to become popular with the philistines anyway?

  • pretty fucking nice the guitar entrance solo. hellyeah.

  • still sounds as good as it did in home room 15 years ago

  • @bcrem82 hell yeah!!!!

  • @bcrem82 Damn! It's been that long already?! Saw them live in 96' and they opened up with the Mellon Collie piano intro followed by this badass song.

  • when I bought this CD disc 1 didnt work at first so I put on disc 2, hearing the first few seconds of this song I knew this album was going to blow me away

  • the most Amazing compilation of versatile tunes on any album ever!!

  • 1:19 Doom rocket launcher.

  • My first cd. 15 years later and i'm still in love for this album. Unbelievable.

  • Smashing Pumpkins Into Small Piles of Debris

  • @thekkl Smashing Pumpkins into Small Piles of *Putrid *Debris ;) IDSPISPOPD lawl.

  • one of the pumpkins heavier songs. fabulous.

  • One of the best albums of the 90s.

  • for me, the greatest album ever. I don't care if you don't agree, for me it's the best album ever.

  • @giannibanni Agreed. This is actually the first CD I ever owned and it is still one of my all time favorites.

  • one of the greatest albums ever....

  • TRIP

  • @RiVaLSSJ

    Ditto.

I remembered reading the acknowledgment for permission from ID to use the "DOOM explosion" noise in the liner notes, but I couldn't remember which song had the noise. A quick internet search led me here. :]

  • This song has a sick intro.

  • good song. even better with both the left and right tracks. upload fail.

  • One of my favorites, if one can chose favorites with these guys!!!

  • F*ckin Choooooooooon

  • weird thing how this songs end is cutoff in the end on the album..

  • Love that intro. Very dirty. Fucking awesome.

  • what can ya say

  • Probably greatest album ever...

  • such a great intro on this song (cant hear all parts on this version though). great album, thanks for the post

  • the opening to this song is just awesome

  • Guys, you ever heard of the joke game "Smashing Pumpkins Into Small Piles of Putrid Debris?" Well, it was a joke someone started just before the classic game DOOM came out.

If you listen closely, from 1:21 to 1:23 you can hear the original sound effect of an exploding barrel from DOOM.

    That's just fucking epic.

  • @SpartanJose777 Fuck yea!

  • @SpartanJose777 oh shit dude. tht is pretty fucking cool lol

  • @SpartanJose777 Happens at the beginning of each cycle of verses also. It's so friggen awesome, and I want to steal the idea!

  • the best band ever. but this song is not possible without tony Iommi.

  • @crb2002 true.

  • It's a well-documented fact that people often find their faces have melted off after being exposed to the bone-crushing awesomeness of this song.

  • The intro rapes me in the nuts

  • @dasjerkstore DUDE FUCK YA

  • At 1:20 you can hear the whoosh of the rocket launcher from Doom 1 and Doom 2

  • For a love lost

    A faded picture

    To tread lighting

To ink the lavender sky.... billy corgan is one of the best songwriters ever.

  • smashing pumpins are the best band ever

  • Fuck. Yes.

  • Michael Jackson's House??? haha lol jk great song

  • i borrowed it from the city library and i was impressed by it , its an awesome record but there are also a few fillers on it

  • waaaaaaaaaaaah...

    ahahahahah

    ROOOOOOOOOOCK!!!!

  • when i backtrack this song while i play the guitar to this, theres this one chime or chirp or whatever at :51 my dog goes crazy and starts barking like crazy...

  • Comment removed

  • @juandigreat87 every time i backtrack. or just put it on the stereo to listen to it regularly

  • Can you believe this album did not win a grammy? nor is it on rolling stones 100 best albums list... what a fuckn joke

  • Fucking awesome riff at the beginning.

  • doom explosion ftw

  • @shaydee313

    Shoot the rocket launcher!

  • one of the coolest intros ever

  • another under-rated track to say the least.

  • IDSPISPOPD!!!!

  • @TroutButter hahahahhahah YES!

  • you fuckin stupid bitches please just shut tha fuck up you just ruin the page on what this great song is

  • I love Smashing Pumpkins into small piles of putrid debris.

    :P

  • not only is this a great song on a great album, but it brings back some fucking great memories!

  • I hope Pumpkins can come back to this artistic realm! I'll just blot out the Zeitgeist album.

  • 1. Siamese Dream

    2. Gish

    3. Mellon Collie

That said-- I think Mellon Collie is a complete masterpiece, and blows all non-SP 90's albums out of the water. If that's my praise for my number 3 pumpkins CD, imagine what I have to say about Siamese Dream :-)

  • well thats just plain confusing now. o_O

  • I love how this uses a sound effect from DOOM.

  • I was just thinking that. I love that part!

  • it soooooooo goes with the song.

  • Nah lol i live with my dad, who cant (be arsed to) clean anything :D. She only comes on mondays, not like shes here 24/7. And every monday, every fking thing is suddenly moved to another spot ;(

  • This album and Pixies - Wave of Mutilation are the only objects i think are valuable to me. I have nightmares of my cleaning lady accidentaly throwing them out with the trash :(

  • Bought this set when I was a sophomore in high school. 30 now, but god damn does it rock.

I've owned three more copies of this double disc set. They get played so much and then get ruined from it. Still worth the money.

  • Damn, this is one of the baddest songs, off one of the baddest cd's ever! Agree with dougfresh514 , MASTERPIECE!

  • yes yes yes!!.. Meloncollie is a truly a great work.

  • the riffs in this song are awesome. i love this song.

  • this song is super fun to play probably my fav riff of all time

  • I love this song, with it's dark sense of urgency and just dominance of the dark...it's an epic song, and i love to play it...it's like a warning, almost. Epic :D

  • It's a masterpiece

  • Great beginner song on the guitar, This was the first tune I got memorized on my guitar a year ago. Love it.

  • Comment removed

  • One of the great rock albums ever. I can't help but get a little upset when I say this to people and they have never heard of it. They Pumpkins are always going to be one of the greats but will always be soo over looked.

  • you just have to listen to one song to become a fan, problem is not enough people bother to listen :l

  • Not really - this album was #1 on both the UK an Billboard charts, and got them a grammy. In the music industry, that's not being overlooked.

  • no kidding to bad huh.

  • what's even funnier is that rolling stone gave it 3 of 5 stars when it came out. i bet whoever did that feels like an idiot now.

  • yes they do

  • I totally agree on that.

  • Compared to today's music mellon collie is the equivalent of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band.

Rolling Stone is foolish for giving such a low rating.

  • @ foolsgold, Rolling Stone certainly ain't gospel.

  • @schism206 I also remember that they only reviewed the first disc, which this isn't even on. Straight up laziness. . .

  • @perfectively the second disc had all the good hard rockers!

  • @schism206

Machina was such a good album it ruined their career.

    Funny stuff

  • @peniosasdasd

You are aware that this track is off Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness aren't you?

  • @iliketosmashpumpkins This album went to number one in many countries and sold over 9million copies. It is far from overlooked. And yes, it is one of the greatest rock albums ever.

  • @iliketosmashpumpkins uh, this album sold over 9 million copies. how are they overlooked? compared to abba, maybe?

  • @misterbizzones It's overlooked by kids and teenagers today. Like my age: 15.

  • Andres Montes RIP

  • Proof that the Pumpkins can pull of being a Progressive Metal band \,,/

  • does this shit even work

    MOD

    what about God?

Zero = best mini album ever

    nuff said

  • just a little peice of comparison....the music we consider "good" today....ten years from now will be "eh, whatever" Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness was good when it came out (I was 15) now, still fucking priceless. This music stands the test of time, why? cause its timeless.

  • You're right. It is. "Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness" is my all-time favorite album written by any band. But, that's just my two cents.

  • i was 11, it was my 1st record!!!!!!

and yep, its timeless. today i was at a disco place in barcelona, the last song was tonight tonight.

    somethings know no time

  • best album ever, and I will never forget the times, the great memories I have from this amazing band.

  • DOOM!!!

  • Me too.

  • billy corgan is a music genius

  • this bad boy rocks....

  • i reckon the best are: zero, bullet with butterfly wings, where boys fear to tread, bodies, jellybelly

  • my favorite smashing pumpkins song,

probably the first i ever heard, opening riff 0:30 is killing me

  • amazing how they ripped themselves off :p the songs wer so good they had to rip themselves off hahaha

  • There's a sample from the Doom video game between 1:20 and 1:22 ... also at the start of other verses I think :)

  • songs

  • what other smashing pumpkins have a similar vibe like this?

  • check out X.Y.U

  • zero kinda has the same vibe

  • Zero maybe, or Bullet with Butterfly Wings are the ones that come to mind.

  • none they are all their own vibe but rock just as hard. grab MCIS and siames dream

  • Gish is amazing too!!! the album that started it all ;)
