  • sticks and stones was ruined when rihanna wrote that song

  • You can't give offense; you can only take offense.

  • shitredditsays

  • Why does it matter when people get offended? Well, he did mention political correctness - which in many cases constitutes not reinforcing prejudice. 'Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words never hurt me' is fine and dandy - until you pay attention to reality, where words often lead to the sticks and stones.

I get the argument about not overly sanitized speech, but people who talk as if there's no problem at all with things people say aren't helping -it's a simplistic backlash.

  • @ZdPhoenix you should harden the fuck up and not be a dick

  • So I should harden up (from a person who overreacted to a different view) and stop being a dick (from someone who actually posted a dick reply over nothing) . . . that comment made me lol :)

  • @ZdPhoenix Words don't lead to sticks and stones. People choosing to be offended by the words leads to sticks and stones.

  • @beauxq that sounds like people being offended by insults or prejudice bring violence upon themselves by reacting badly to it, which is rather an odd idea.

Prejudice and violence that follows is clearly not founded in some sudden sense of offence conjured out of thin air: such things live in demagoguery and incitement.

  • @ZdPhoenix Because those aren't conjured out of thin air, right?

  • @beauxq indeed not - although whereas you'd rightly expect insults and ingrained prejudice to elicit a negative reaction, the excuses for prejudice itself are usually rather weak.

  • @ZdPhoenix No, I would not expect a negative reaction. And the fact that you expect a negative reaction is exactly what the problem is. Stop expecting a negative reaction. You're causing the violence by expecting that.

  • @beauxq the problems with ingrained racism, homophobia, sexism(etc) have never been that people suddenly became enraged because those groups don't laugh along, Oppression wasn't invented by an attitude of victimisation, the attitude was invented by them actually being victims of true awful treatment and the odd crime against humanity. Any idea contrary is plainly ridiculous . . . it would seem to have been trolled here. Touché sir.

  • Comment removed

  • @beauxq I'm really sorry if you were genuinely making that point, but it's just so bizarre it's hard to believe, or know what to say to. That sort of apologist position for racism and xenophobia and the like is pretty rare to come across in a non comment trolling form, and that particular line of argument is new to me.

I'm not sure there's anything to say other than 'wow' and leave you to it.

  • @ZdPhoenix People rejecting an idea just because it's new or bizarre is one of the biggest problems in the world today.

  • i like this guy

  • Bumchugging

  • @bronzeguy This unfunny joke offends me.

  • I'm offended and I find this leprosy.

  • I'm in a boy band composed entirely out of leprous members and I find this quite offensive.

  • Awesome

  • Lol, yeah i'm gay when my friend called me a faggot i said "excuse me sir, we prefer the term 'ass pirates'"

  • @beastlaxkid Bum Chum is my personal favorite..

  • Offense is taken not given

  • We've all heard this: "My TV licence fee doesn't pay for this tripe!" ..well you should have thought about that before you bought a T.V.

It's not like there's a law saying you have to buy one, man. Don't think you're in a position to lecture everyone because you're willing to spend hundreds of pounds on something you know nothing about.

You think I can control the whole world by complaining about the X Factor? No, I toughen up. I put up with that 'talent', try putting up with others', please?

  • People who get offended offend me

  • @Necrosis527 You offend yourself.

  • 81 people got offended ...

  • Bill Hicks, is that you ? i knew you'd come back

  • @AverageJ0emusic I love them both, but they're quite different. Hicks was notoriously left wing, while Hughes is a libertarian.

  • @hayesism

I think they toe the same line when it comes to political correctness though :P

  • @InnuendoXP Agreed. Boy bands, too. :P

Move over Howie and Gallagher. I've found your replacement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I have leprosy and I am offended.

  • @Spinner891 so what be offended nothing happens

  • @Spinner891

Then you can be offended XD

  • this bloke make sense

  • He reminds me of a much younger and less articulate (and of course much more alive) George Carlin. :)

  • It's funny 'cause it's true.

  • He's hilarious, and spot on! :D

  • he brings it up right. Political correctness has turned into a weapon that right wing wackos use to insult people who are not racists, homophobes or a womanhater.

  • Gotta love steve's take on matters... whole heartily agree with this stance on police state. World govenment

  • Racism is excluded from the video..

  • send this video to the Unions complaining about clarkson...

  • @markarkrkk Yeah it is just PERFECT!!

  • @markarkrkk or to business entities complaining about being subordinate to human beings, as intended in our consumer economy... you ~are~ sending it, no?

  • ^^^^^^ this video teaches the intertubes on the topic of dealing with trolls.

  • I'm offensively offended by offensive offenders offending the unoffended offenders.

  • @Stevelogical offended-ception

  • when people tell me that ive offended them

i tell them to do the only thing they cam about

    whine

  • @RasrapSmurf You're missing the point. It is said, "You can't please all of the people all of the time." If one must censor oneself in the vain attempt never to offend anyone, then why bother?.

It is only through criticism that ideas are challenged, and all ideas must be challenged, from every possible angle, at all times. The strong ones survive and are made stronger for the attack, while the weak ones die off. Nothing is exempt.

And hey, if that offends you... tough.

  • I'm offended and i find this offensive.

  • JESUS CHRIST!

  • THIS IS SCARY HOW MUCH THIS MAN AND I THINK ALIKE. Even down to the look.

  • Truth. Just plain truth

  • It's kinda sad that people are using videos like this to rationalise being a complete dick for no reason whatsoever.

  • @RasrapSmurf It's even sadder that people get up in arms over nothing.

  • @MoriyaMug Not really, no

  • @RasrapSmurf Many people deserve to be offended... particularly and especially those who think they have the right never to be offended. Fortunately, no Constitution affords anyone that right, just yet.

"I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it," is a concept that is basically lost in this day and age, having been replaced with, "You can't say that! If you say that, I'll sue you!"

    Screw political correctness.

  • @MoriyaMug I find it sadder that people find ways to justify intentionally making other people's lives more miserable, than I find the fact that some people are offended by things that aren't offensive.

  • @RasrapSmurf You're an idiot, it has nothing to do with going around and being a dick....you dick.

  • @MosbeckSB You're hilarious

  • @ionfalcom Well then you were lucky that whatever happened to you happened. But then, you're an example of why it's not a good idea to have the attitude of 'well they deserve it for being so weak' because obviously with support etc (and whatever happened to you) can make them stronger. Some people would react and say 'yeah fuck it' to being told to shut the fuck up, other people would go the opposite way and just kill themselves. Some people wouldn't react at all. Everyone's different.

  • Fact Is: Even something offends you, you shouldn't care of what will happen to you.

    Just move on.

  • There's a difference isn't there. He isn't talking someone taking the piss out of a dead relative or even directly abusing someone. It's people looking into statements and trying to find something to be offended about and also people that are being offended for other people.

  • @LukeGriffths121 in the clip he's categorically saying no one ever has a right to be offended. if he was just targeting people that 'make up' that their offended then it wouldn't be much of a point would it

  • @yeastcapp You're wrong. He's saying everyone has a right to be offended, but if you are, shut the fuck up about it. It's only words, it doesn't hurt, it's just funny. And in the case of cyber bullying / bullying = So what? Like Steve said "don't worry about them, their dicks".

  • @DKOPness see carlculliane's comment below

  • @yeastcapp They're weak shits. I've been bullied tonnes for being different, foreign, and just generally not 'normal'. Do I care? No. I know there are millions out there worse off than myself, so i stroll through life not giving a damn what people say towards me. I know i'm essentially a good person, but if I do say soemthing nasty to someone, they should shrug it off. Morons who go and self-harm / QQ "That person at school said something nasty" - Fuck off, you deserve it if you're so weak.

  • @DKOPness Whoaaaa this is a bit too far. I agree, people get so offended by ridiculous things, and it's annoying, but telling someone who gets bullied constantly to get over it, and they deserve it if they let it get to them is just ignorent. It isn't that easy. Not everyone is as strong as clearly you are, but that's no reason to redicule them for not being strong. I thought you said you were essentially a good person? It's doesn't seem like it to me. Or maybe you are just ignorent.

  • @MRMATRONIC you sound like you are offended

this isn't an argument you will win on the comments section of this video!

  • @trisoutlaw86 I'm not offended, I'm pissed off.

  • @MRMATRONIC If you are pissed off, then something offends you.

But hey, why should you care of In first place? Just vent your anger on the first stranger you find on the Internet and move on. Let em call you a sissy, carebear and other negative adjectives.

  • @MRMATRONIC Unless you're being beaten up everyday you should shut the fuck up moaning about it and ignore what people say. You can only be offended if you choose to be.

  • @Derbensteiger Not true. You're only looking at it from your own perspective. It's not that easy to just ignore it. I was bullied every day, not beaten up, but it was still constant and impossible to 'just ignore it'. The only reason I was able to get over it was cause I happened to have friends, but try telling someone who hasn't got friends and gets bullied constantly to get over it. It's more likely they'll probably just go home and hang themselves.

  • Yes, because marginalisation, bullying and abuse never has any real effect on people's mental health.

  • This guy offends me.

  • This is bullshit. It is easy not to be offended as a straight white male. Words can inflict pain that runs a lot deeper than physical harm. This will continue to be the case even as comedians giddily dismiss the massive power language has, and the responsibility that comes with it.

  • @yeastcapp As a straight white male, I'm quite offended by your comment.

  • @yeastcapp so you can't be offended if you're a white straight male? Shut the fuck up. You're part of the problem.

  • @LukeGriffths121 Where do you stand on this issue, Luke? Words can never hurt you or everyone can be offended sometimes? Straight white males (like me) are highly culturally privileged and get an easier ride for sure.

  • @yeastcapp Firstly, people are offended by virtually harmless and benign statements now and I am with this guy on the fact that being offended is like a culture now and seems to dominate the media and people's lives, it's just fucking stupid. I never said words never hurt anyone did I? You're putting words in my mouth. Secondly, if you believe that this guys statements are totally wrong then you cannot exclude certain groups of people which is what you just did. What if someone is offended by

  • @yeastcapp chin up sweetheart its only words.

  • @yeastcapp your statement. What if a white straight male is a very religious man? Can he not be offended by attacks against his religion? You're a moron. I think sometimes people should be offended and I don't believe people should purposely try to be offensive towards other people but it's got to a stage now where it is beyond ridiculous.

  • I think people are taking this too seriously in their support of this message - he is a comedian making a JOKE! I'm sure if Steve Hughes' dad died or his daughter was raped he wouldn't appreciate me turning it into a punch line.

  • thumbs up if people getting offended gets you offended.......oh hang on.....

  • i agree with this tramp

  • Excellent in every way! No doubt some people will be offended by this.

  • I laughed so hard I punched my dog.

  • @Ophiekins You win the prize for most random comment of the day *hi-five*

  • 69 people were offended.

  • great discussion on the pussification of America

  • relativism, it shuts people up!

  • He may be a comedian, but, damn, he hits the nail on the head!

  • @sw19cam Nailed it?

  • @sw19cam really good comedians should do that :)

  • @corysytaccount I'm fortunate enough to be seeing SH this week!!

  • Soo 240p we meet again

  • @notfound85 240p, and wrong aspect ratio too. Ah well, at least we can hear clearly what he's saying, which is more tan can be said for the Finnish set.

  • To put things into perspective, nothing is offensive until it happens to you. You can say that you can choose to not be offended all day and all night for the rest of your life, but you're lying to yourself if you think you have been exempt from being offended. Yes, you don't have to be vocal about it but if you're not vocal about being offended, people will keep offending you and you will be their doormat. Although this comedian is funny, there are ways to be funny w/out offending.

  • @Blissss09 I guess it can depend on the extremity of the event that happened to you. If you've gone through a break up, you can still find it funny if someone mocks it... hopefully. But yeh really serious bad stuff like rape seems to be funny for everyone else that is hasn't happened to x

  • you being offended by a video about being offended offends me belief of not being offended..... offended

  • @jaizizkool OFFENDCEPTION!!!!!

  • Watch this, Anton Ferdinand, you disgusting, cheating, stupid CUNT!

  • r/starcraft anyone?

  • This video offends me.

  • Legend !

  • I actually agree with this guy.

  • Love the fucking shit out of this.

  • Man, I am not trying to make anyone do anything and I have already explained and apologised for the fact that I very stupidly brought up the point here after the whole Gervais "mong" argument. Please don't act like you know me or anything about me because I am not doing that with you, even though you're insulting me. Just chill out and agree that we clearly believe two different things, that's that. That SirToshley dude seemed amiable enough, and he actually had more of a right to be pissed off.

  • You just did it. "It would be more worthwhile to read a book, hey read this!" I take that as trying to push something on me. Believe what works for you, but let it be questioned.

I don't have a stake in anything before I replied, doesn't matter to me. You're not being presumptuous although you claim I believe something, though you obviously can't tell what? PC to me is something that is delivered through the establishment and conformed to, instead of people doing it out of sincerity, that's all

  • @TheKingofBastards Even if that was to be the case, that people conform to PC, not out of sincerity, isn't that an okay thing? Surely it's better that people don't offend one another out of trying to be polite rather than offending one another? There are still enough horrific cases of people suffering because of such things as race, disability etc. that I think that PC is a good thing.

And I wasn't meaning you to read anything. It's just they are much more eloquent/interesting than this exchange.

  • No, it isn't, and that should be obvious. A superficial change in language will do nothing but give less obvious excuses for people to victimize themselves over.

Since you can't shut the fuck up about how boring and how uninteresting and how meaningless this exchange is (despite the fact that you won't do the rational thing and say nothing if you really feel that way), I'm going to point out that it undermines any values you may hold about language or humanity, now fuck off.

  • @TheKingofBastards Hahaha, jeeez... alright. Peace.

  • "I went to a comedy club and he said about the Lord and I was offended.... and when I woke up I had leprosy" - hilarious

  • I can get why people think this is funny, but to utilise what he's saying as if it has any actual thought or relevance past humour is just bullshit. But to be fair, that big Michael Mcintyre sign behind didn't exactly make me hold my breath and wait for anything profound...

  • @ivebeeneatingforyouu But it does though, if people took those words that they find offensive, and stopped being offended by them, they wouldn't be offensive, and would no longer have to bring negativity to the scene because they were offended. They would also now have a spine, and humanity would be ever so slightly better.

  • @SirToshley You're kind of burdening the recepient with all the responsibility. Racism, fx., doesn't go away, if people just stopped being offended by racial slurs and racist sentiment.

What we say doesn't exist in a vacuum. We have the right and the freedom to offend each other, but we also shouldn't act like dickheads, twats and idiots just for the sake of acting like dickheads, twats and idiots. Nor should we just ignore people, when they say hateful shit. That's as good as condoning it.

  • @ivebeeneatingforyouu I know what you mean, and do agree for the most part. I do however think that it is easier to choose not to offend than it is for certain people to choose whether or not something offends them. (Sorry, very clumsily worded). Although, reading back my comment I was a little angry and venting spleen about this whole Ricky Gervais "mong" thing. Stupid and a little irrelevant of me, I know, to bring up a point about something else and post it here.

  • @ivebeeneatingforyouu So it's easier for peope to control how they act than how they react? What rubbish.

  • @TheKingofBastards Not in all circumstances. And not "how they act": i said "choose not to offend". I'm not saying anything about censorship either. People can say whatever they want, I'm just saying that if people joke about certain subjects, e.g. the disabled, rape etc. without there being any meaning or thought behind the joke then to me, I don't think it's a joke worth making. But like I said, I wasn't really directing my first comment at this guy, was just a little drunk, so I apologise.

  • Actually you can't choose not to offend someone. Moreover that's onesided. I have to understand somebody well enough to not offend (nevermind the fact that they might not even deserve that kind of understanding), but they are in no way responsible to have the understanding required not to get offended in the first place?

    Keep drinking.

  • @TheKingofBastards I didn't really understand much of that. But I can't really be bothered arguing - like I said, this isn't really an appropriate platform for any interesting discussion. From you or me; to anyone.

  • Why, because it's riddled with inhumanity and overblown egos (your own compels you to make such a sad statement as that)? Guess what, that's everywhere else in the world.

    Just keep drinking.

  • @TheKingofBastards Dude, what on earth are you talking about? I'm just saying I have enough respect for the both of us, and for most other people who would see this, to assume that people don't need some shitty youtube argument to make their minds up about something so important as offensiveness in comedy. It'd be much more worthwhile to just read a book. Edward Stourton's 'It's a PC World' is pretty simple and coherent on the matter. As is basically anything by Lee/Herring.

  • If you had respect for anybody at all you wouldn't have spoken up in the first place. Which is it then? An interesting discussion not suited for this medium (as if that means anything at all) or a shitty youtube argument? You want people to make up their own mind but you want me to read what you tell me to? You're so full of shit you can't make heads or tails of anything.

  • Knob at Night

  • Mongs in support of Gervais
