I live in California and saw one blow just like that during the Hector Mine Earthquake, and the whole sky kept lighting up from transformer blow-outs. I turned on the TV and the local news said, "If you're watching this broadcast, you're one of the few." You'll see that in any big earthquake in a city.

The color indicates that the glow was a blown transformer. When lightning strikes a transformer, it explodes and causes the sky to light up in a greenish blue color. The same would happen if the wires connected from said box are ripped out of the box. The earthquake very easily could have downed a power line, ripping the wires from the transformer.
