Near hides his emotions because they can hinder your ability to think clearly - and that's why he's so smart. Obviously he has emotions - especially in the manga he even tells Kira that, "It hurts" having his team being killed off.

Also, why does Near have to be just like L? Near is a human being and is unique - just because he replaced L as the world's top investigator doesn't mean he has to be exactly like L!

He wouldn't have known, I suppose. Light was young and inexperienced with the Death Note at the time of the Lind L. Tailor incident. But he could have assumed that the real great detective L wouldn't be dumb enough to broadcast his real name if there was a chance he could die... He could have decided to ignore the bait. Obviously, after meeting L and figuring out L's opperating style, we assume that Light wouldn't have made the Lind L. Tailor mistake. But because Light acted on impulse, he lost.

light strive for justice his biggest goal is to be god of the new world and he couldn't let anybody get in the way of that goal so he had to kill Lind L tailor. i'm not sure but i think when he saw tailor that was the first time he ever heard about L so he never knew L would be so much of a challenge and he didn't know of how smart he was so he pretty much presumed he wasn't all that intelligent and killed him.

Personally i never liked near because honestly, he just acted exactly like L, or tryed to. making him look like a copy-cat. And i know he was groomed to be Ls sucessor, but still i always thought i got most excited when light and L fought to find out eachothers identity first, and bring eachother down. those where the best episodes all in my opinion, after L died, it was pretty much unbelievably boring, seeing as there wasnt much tension as before when L was alive.

If it had ended at L's death it would have been too predictable - having Mello and Near added to the complexity of the opposing themes at play in DN. Depending on your values and where you are in the story, characters appear evil, benevolent, or a mix of the two. DN is dynamic, and to stay that way there would have to be more than the generic man vs. man.

Was it weaker in a sense? Yes. But it added so much to DN on the whole.

I don't think having Mello and Near added any complexity. I agree that there were /some/ enjoyable aspects of that story arc. Overall? I think it hurt the series pretty badly. It was completely redundant. Mello and Near were fucking annoying.

And I couldn't disagree more with the second arc being dynamic. By the second "season", light was made out to be a complete fucking evil loon, and Near was always the good guy. It was insanely oversimplified.

Actually, I don't think that Near really disliked L. If he had, he wouldn't have gone through all the effort to try and work as hard as he did on the case. He even said that he was working so hard because he had to live up to L's name. I think that he was just angry about L's death, and was covering it up by saying something childish like that. Usually, when people get angry, they act childish.

In the Death Note one-shot, Near says it himself that he detested L and everything he stood for in the beginning. However, once discovering that L did not solve cases because he thought himself righteous, but because it was a hobby, Near begun to understand him-- and, at the same time, feel closer.

I believe he says something along the lines of "Some children learned the meaning of 'despair' from L that day, but I began to like him more..."
