Way to go TLJ! I agree, cutting funding is ridiculous. However, education makes up that largest part of our state’s budget (nearly 44%). I think we need to look at ways to ensure we are getting a quality product. Some teachers are stressed, overworked, but really care for the children and enjoy the career. Others are just there for the j-o-b. Administrators need to hold them to high standards. TAKS is not the way to do it.

Texas' education sucks because the rich want it to because it dumbs down our children so that it provides more votes for the Republicans by ill-informed voters. A uneducated voter is a vote for a Republican. I mean seriously, why would a person vote for a Republican in texas knowing they will take away services they use like education, food stamps, medicaid, health services, WIC, and other important services for the working poor and even some lower middle class. The amount of money spent on education is important, just as the quality of teachers, materials (thanks Texas for lowering the bar on this one), and facilities. There is a reason Texas ranks so high on the drop out rate, among a host of other nasty statistics.

even with whatever number of illegal immigrants you may think we are educating, Texas still has a pretty low standard of education, that many students still don't meet with the resources already allocated to them. Why do we need to cut those resources? We should be increasing out educational spending, and make sure it isn't spent more in the bureaucracy but in the classroom.

See Iowahawk's blog comparing Texas and Wisconsin schools. More money doesn't mean better performance. In some cases it leads to worse performance, esp. when you get paid more for doing worse.

maybe if we were only educating our citizens or those here legally, schools wouldn't need as much money.but when a child registers for school in Texas, no proof of citizenship or legal immigration is required. that, my friends, is a problem.

why is that a problem? you want noncitizens to also be unemployable so that their only recourse is crime? What possible benefit would anyone have from an uneducated group of illegal immigrants? And what crime did 6 year old illegal kids commit? That they followed their parents? You want to punish them for life because of the actions of their parents? The problem is that those in a decision-making position in public ed are NOT educators and believe a business-model works to solve issues. Well, Mr. CNBarnes, since you seem to know it all, we will just send all PreK-12 students to you, and you can educate them.

There are plenty of things wrong with public education in this country (not just Texas), but cutting off funding and having NO education is certainly not the answer. Do you have a job? If so, I am sure you would like to keep it. Cut funding? Cut 300,000 plus jobs in this state? That will help the economy for sure!
