census workers work different phases. that worker might not have known what all the gps was for. those that are doing the non response follow up phase use the gps to find homes that were missing forms. The man who came to your house was an enumerator hired by the U.S. Census Bureau. I did this work also last year. The Census Bureau had a database of addresses and needed to confirm there is a house there and that it is being lived in. The device that we utilized used GPS tracking to pin down the address location electronically for the Bureau's records. It also makes its easy for another employee to find the location for any future contact that needs to take place.

Just an FYI, the same thing happened to me in New Jersey but the Census Employee gave me a detailed explanation. It's called address canvassing; basically, they need to cross-reference the GPS Coordinates with your county's address file list to be sure that everything is in sync.

The reason why the guy probably freaked out is because the census workers cant be filmed while they're doing their jobs. It would pretty much violate privacy laws for you & your neighbors.

Ralphed623 is correct. It is done to update the maps and addresslists in the country so that the Bureau knows where to send the questionaires next year. Before satellite tech, the Bureau updated maps by hand. Besides, as far as GPS tech goes, it is not very sophisticated. The sophisticated stuff that folks should worry about is owned by the other agencies like CIA and the like. If the govt wanted to us it against people, they wouldn't need the Census stuff.

Well, the Bureau uses its own system and doesn't automatically have the most updated maps and addresses that have been added or changed over the last decade. It is up to the Bureau to update all that out on its own, it doesn't collect those updates from other government or non-government agencies. Awkward, yes, but that's how the Bureau is set up.

They trained these people for a week. The week was spent on the actual device.

In that device, each person is assigned an area with addresses. They are to go find the addresses and get the GPS locations of the front door. There are tons of addresses that are completely incorrect.

So in the end, I don't know why the Census bureau is doing this but don't expect the peons like my mom to know either. They didn't tell these people why this is being done. They just trained them to do it.

Ok let me start. Just like I had questions about the video and you answered them, I am going to try and answer some of your comments about the demeanor of the guy.

My mom is one of the census workers doing this in the GSP area. She lost her job back in September and she was offered this work. She is in her 60s with very little technical background.

If you asked her anything about why this is being done, she couldn't tell you.

My neighbor has a cam inside a birdhouse-the lens looks out the hole-So he can record everything that comes into his driveway. You can get those hunting cams-some people put them all around their houses.

I confronted a census GPSing an RV park! He said that with the GPS coordinates the census could send out the forms to all addresses even if no one lived there. He also said he got the cops called on him and was harassed for about an hour. haha just sick the cops on them! They will get real tired of that, real fast...
